Nice! I still have some Cranberry Crisp too. Heck, I even have some Mint Melody - now that's pretty old, LOL!

Thanks, Marge.

I haven't thought ahead much to ODS being in college band, other than "wow, it would be cool if he's a Marching Royal Duke someday" and "sorry, Marching Virginians, but I like the MRD uniforms a lot better". (Priorities, huh. LOL) First he has to be accepted into a college, kwim? But he does plan to try out for marching band no matter which school he attends.

If he does get into JMU and becomes an MRD, then we'll probably get tickets for the home games. If he ends up going to VT and becomes a Marching Virginian, well, I don't know. VT game tickets are a lot more expensive, plus the school is farther away - not so far that we couldn't go down there for the day, but still about 100 miles farther from us than JMU is.

I think I've mentioned that our middle school band teacher was a Marching Virginian at VT, and our high school band teacher was a drum major for the Marching Royal Dukes at JMU. So they have a friendly rivalry going on between them over recruiting students to Tech or JMU. They tell the students, "If you want the chance to go to a college football bowl game, be a Marching Virginian. If you want the chance to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or travel internationally, be an MRD." Which really sums it up pretty nicely.

AAAACCCKKK NOOOO.

Stay away from the Firestone-Goodyear chain places. I'd ask around and see if you can find a good independent mechanic. Hard to find one but might be worth joining Angie's list or something just for a recommendation. Wish I'd known you were going there. Several of my car guy friends have worked for different places like that and every. last. one. of them quit because of what went on there. OK if you just need tires or an oil change but they're on commission based on how much service they can sell you.

If Steve's check engine light is coming on after $400 of work they either don't know what they're doing or want to milk the car.

Just woke up after spending most of day sleeping in a dark room. I called in to an early meeting, then throbbing head turned into migraine with vomiting so I called mgr to let him know I'd be home sick, threw up again and crawled back under the blanket to sleep.

Marge, I just finished The Light Between Oceans. What a heartbreaking book. A lot to think about in all that moral ambiguity: how much we want those lines to be clear and bright, and want to live within them, and the wild call of everything that suddenly blurs them, pain and loss above all. I have the feeling it will make for some interesting conversations driving up the shore of Lake Michigan. Any other books I should read before I arrive (or more likely, given next several weeks, on the plane)?

I think the two books I've loved the most in life were Death Comes for the Archbishop, by Willa Cather, and Encounters with the Archdruid, by John McPhee, but I can never find anyone else who's read them. Apparently I only love books with 'Arch' in the title.

I seriously think the Archdruid book is the antidote to all the Ayn Rand nonsense making its way around American Conservatism at the moment. Come to think of it, so is Death Comes for the Archbishop. I think those books both changed my life: they made me realize so much about coming to terms with an imperfect world but still seeing and honoring all that's beautiful and right in it, and trying to do what you can even when you know it will never be perfect or all that you hope you might change. The Light Between Oceans is so much more about looking for what's right, and yearning for peace and completeness and joy at such a brutally destructive price.

I have 3 days to clean before cousin and her family arrived and I think I've lost this evening to feeling totally wiped out.

I know I heard at least one parent talking about how intent to apply for band factored favorably into someone being admitted to a college. Then some get interested in a major and end up in a college that doesn't have a band. Sigh.

Lack of a marching band has taken a few places out of consideration for ODS.

So he's given it priority. One kid I know did not, but found some jazz band people and plays with them, they've had concerts at the school, etc. So it's something with his music, at least.

Oh! Speaking of marching band... here's a funny from last week.

The show that they're doing this year has four songs. So last week, they concentrated on the first song on Monday, the second on Tuesday, the third on Wednesday, and the last one on Thursday. Then on Friday they worked on putting the whole show together.

ODS and YDS remembered how happy I was to get that one photo of them together last year (see avatar for reference). They came home on Wednesday and told me that it wasn't looking like I'd be able to get anything like it this year because they aren't close to each other on the field during the first three songs.

They didn't say anything about the drill when they came home Thursday.

Friday after practice they did the performance for the parents...

... and at the very end of the show, YDS stands directly in front of ODS.

We've met the man who wrote the drill for our band. He's a band teacher at one of the other local high schools. I told ODS and YDS that I'd have to thank that teacher for putting them close together at the end of the show.

In typical teenager fashion, they rolled their eyes at me. LOL

So tonight I attended the last public school orientation that I'll need to go to for my kids.

I got a little emotional about it for about 15 seconds before thinking of it like being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

YDS is taking biology first semester. I won't bore y'all with the story of why he's taking it as a 9th grader even though it's normally a 10th grade class. It didn't bother him that he'd probably be the only 9th grader in there, so we decided to just roll with it.

At orientation tonight we learned there's one other 9th grader in his class, a girl he knows from band. She and her mom had found the classroom before we did. When we came in, the girl said, "Oh good, there's another freshman in here - and it ISN'T someone who I'd like to punch in the stomach!"

So that's good to know. LOL.

Ninth grade science is earth science. It's been that way since I was in school. (eta: YDS will have that second semester.)

9th grade - earth science
10th grade - biology I
11th grade - chemistry
12th grade - biology II and/or physics, both typically as electives for the scientific-minded kids or ones who want to go into any sort of medical or animal-related field (eta: I'm pretty sure ODS is taking physics, but not biology II)

I managed to get out of Biology II because I refused to dissect a cat. I didn't take a science my junior year, and took chemistry as a senior, so I still had enough science credits to get the "advanced studies" seal on my diploma.

Oh, I'm already glad this is the last year I have to fill out two sets of emergency info cards and all the other paperwork!

I feel bad for Amber, knowing she has a lot more to go through before Cinco graduates.

ODS will be doing a mentorship with the middle school band teacher during the second semester. So he'll be spending most of the mornings over at the middle school, getting a taste of what it's like being a band teacher. He'll be working with the 8th graders and most likely also with a group of 7th grade jazz band students.

Thanks Patricia!

Yup, back at work yesterday and today. I can't get sick right now--too much to stay on top of and I'm clambering back up to stay current. Still haven't cleaned and cousin arrives tomorrow.

This evening I stopped on the way home to meet my friend Charlie and pick up the solo canoe he's lending me so I can train for race next month in the absence of time to meet up with our friend Randy, who I'll paddle with. I'll be alternating canoe and kayak time the next several weeks until...

I FLY TO CHICAGO!!!!

I CAN'T WAIT I CAN'T WAIT I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Jane -- the townhouse association is having its annual picnic the Sunday that you'll be here....

I did not go last year but we could go lounge in the common area and thumb our noses......

I think the definition of 'corporate employee listening to senior management uttering warm and fuzzy platitudes' should include the rolling eyes as well... maybe that's what we're supposed to learn from our teenage years!

LOL.

Oh. Poor Shadow. And poor you.

I am happy to help clean dog poop. Heaven knows I got pretty good at it the last few years we had Kelly.

And I still miss Kelly.
