Yeah the heat is coming. Tomorrow will be warmer, Thursday warmer than that, Friday, warmer, you get the idea. Inland (over the hill) hits 102 on Monday or Tuesday. It'll probably be mid 90s here. Sigh. I'll just hide inside. I hope it cools off a little overnight at least.

Seems to like to get hot near the 4th of July every year.

Also by the time the yard guy comes by lawn looks like an agricultural experiment.

Well off to office...

Paddled last night. Absolutely gorgeous evening but stayed out a tad too long and mosquitoes ate me alive carrying the boat back up to the yards. Worth it--gorgeous sunset, sun dropping under cloud cover and illuminating all that heavy grey from underneath, vivid touches of pink here and there. Hard to go back in.

It's funny because we have these froggies that start singing around the pond all at once. When I hear them, that's my signal to head straight in because I don't know what biological wonders of communication or response to light go to work, but once froggies sing, the mosquitoes come to dance. Vile little bloodsuckers.

Still worth it for sunset and that lovely quiet sense of dusk falling under all those clouds, that lovely window of respite from the rain. Just as I got out the boat, I saw lighting way, way off in the distance, so perfect timing.

Was working till midnight. Unfortunately my testing revealed that not all the fixes actually fixed the things that they were supposed to fix.

Jane, perhaps the froggies show up happy and singing because it's happy hour on the pond, when the mosquitoes show up?

So this huge system of heat over Karen's part of the country, is growing and expanding west onto us.

The bad part is, they show us through next Tuesday as getting hotter here every day - and then they say "it's going to be there awhile." Not "it'll be gone by X" - but no. It's like that year - might have been 2007? when it was like 108 for two weeks in early July.

And we have to stop at the bridge in Redding.

It's right off the interstate too.

Ah do believe that's Mount Shasta in the distance. The bridge is in Redding. Wonder it we'll want to stop there long enough to not make the trip up in one day? Although it's less than 400 miles, so maybe it won't matter. A bunch of it is Interstate in a gorgeous area.

And in summer we probably don't want to head up there on a weekend. Weekday would be better.

I should say, it's low 80s. I know it's going to get close to 100 soon. But we've been so spoiled, that 80 feels hot.

The cooling off after Saturday is going from 113 to 106 by Wednesday. Not cool in my book.

Well... it's a good thing they've got you to test for them. That's no fun when you're testing a release, though.

Hate that you missed paddling, though...

What would you think of going up one way, back the other? I'd love for niece to get to see a bit of the coast and the redwoods--maybe just as far as Point Reyes, and then cut over to visit the Chandelier tree?

That's actually a very whimsical, cool thought! Well... up until the part where the skeeters start thinking I'm the bar snack.

Oh I'm all about meeting the bridge after we missed it last year! Maybe we should plan to arrive on a Mon, leave Tues, head back to home base Saturday? 3 nights on the road? If we all share a room, I'd pay 2/3 since there would be 2 of us...

I was thinking niece and I would head up to Yosemite around the middle of the trip to give you and Neal a respite from company for a couple of days.

Just reading about it makes me wish someone would shoot me now.

We've got 90s here and a gazillion percent humidity. Either way the weather bites.

Well I've once again stayed up past my bedtime... off to let the pups out and crawl into bed.

I was looking at the map today. Basically there's a road south from Crater Lake and one that goes off to the southwest and ends up at Crescent City. Then coming south, you'd find the Chandelier Tree. It's pretty close to Crescent City.

Why Point Reyes? If we see the coast at Crescent City, do you still want to go out to Point Reyes? It's only about 25 miles detour but is a winding road over the coastal ridge and takes an hour. lol Either way the route south goes by the tree.

I was thinking niece and I would head up to Yosemite around the middle of the trip to give you and Neal a respite from company for a couple of days.
Uhhhh, haven't thought that far ahead yet, but yeah, we'll see how it works. How many days in Yosemite, where you'll stay, etc.

We stopped at a cool park (national site/monument? something about lava in the name) along the way between Crater Lake and Yosemite. It was a bit off the track but very interesting, with quite a few large lava tubes that can be visited. There's one that used to have ice all year round, but alas, no more. Worth seeing, anyway.
