I'm just glad nobody's charged me for all the paint chips I've taken!

Looks like I get to stay home today instead of running to Costco. I left the keys in my car overnight, in the Aux. position, so it's dead as a doornail. DH can charge it overnight and it should be fine. I'm an idiot.

The ones we picked up were just 3.5" long; one sample is a 3.5" wide plank and the other is 4.75" wide. So the samples are not very big - just mainly to give the consumer the actual width of the planks, plus an idea of how the color will look in their home.

But the samples for sale at Lowe's were about the same size as the freebies from Home Depot.

I was looking online this morning and noticed Home Depot offers 5" x 7" samples of the wood flooring for $10 each.

Lumber Liquidators also offers samples but I couldn't find info on how big they are - but they'll let you pick up to 3 samples for $10 and give you a coupon code, and then when you place an order for them and use the code they credit the $10 back to you.

It's just interesting how the different companies have the different sample policies.

LOL about the paint chips. I haven't taken any recently, but I've picked up quite a few over the years and have even used some of them on cards. In fact, the oldest cards in my SCS gallery use paint chips.
I've also used samples of laminate countertops as tags on cards.

Yeah I have a stash of paint chips. I've used a few on cards. Always mean to do more!

PH...I felt the same way about cork. I think once its down and sealed, its not quite as easily harmed. That's my understanding.

I have tile in both bathrooms. The cold doesn't bother me much and we have bath mats down. You can kind of hop around on them to avoid the floor in the coldest of times. Personally, I don't find linoleum or wood to be much warmer.

Have fun choosing!

I leave my car in the driveway unlocked every night. I used to leave the keys in it, but don't now that we have little ones.

I also don't like my doors except at night or when I'm in the shower.

Wrose, I'm surprised your car didn't beep or yell at you when you opened the door and left the key in the aux position. Mine starts beeping a tune that I swear is cursing anytime I make any type of mistake.

Tree trimmers just came through this morning and trimmed all of our trees that were near the phone line(its above ground outside of the yard). Now, the phone company is coming through to restring some wires. Stupid guy on a quad following the truck has gotten his quad stuck. Ya know, if you can't drive it...DON'T!!! Sadly, its not even a hill. Its just the side of the road with a teeny tiny drop-maybe a foot or two and its a slow grade as it drops. Its grass. What in the world, dude! He is now revving the engine, cause apparently in his little world punching the gas on any type of vehicle will make it move from the hole. Yeah, no.

Today is G's last day of cheer try outs for high school. Everyone cross your fingers for her! She basically has to be good enough to make varsity in order to make it as there is only one Varsity squad.

I've got to give it to her...she has had clinic all week, after school until 6. She also had a soccer game on Tuesday and Thursday at 645. I'm often amazed at how she gets it all done.

The old cheer gang from this past season is getting together after try outs for dinner. Results will be posted one hour after try outs are finished. So, we're all going to eat dinner and then go back to school to see the results. I'm nervous for them.

Not sure if I ever mentioned it, but ODS did not get chosen as drum major for the marching band next year. However, he'll be woodwinds section leader - so all the clarinets (b-flat and bass), flutes, piccolos, and saxophones (alto, and maybe one or two each of tenor and baritone) will have to answer to him. I'm a little disappointed for him, but I also think it will make marching season less stressful.

On the up side, Farquaad did not make drum major, either. He's been named drumline captain again.

The guy who was chosen as drum major - after seeing him interact with other band students over the years, I think he'll do well and that the rest of the band will respect him.

I happened to be standing between ODS and Farquaad when the results were posted. Farquaad had something in his hand and looked like he was going to slam it down on the floor, but then thought better of it in mid-swing. ODS just stood there a little stunned because he didn't think he would be considered for any positions other than drum major.

Sorry he didn't get drum major, PH. Awesome that he is woodwinds section leader, though!

And glad that Farquad didn't get it either!

Yeah I think I went back to check something or finish getting everything or ... I forget but it would have beeped if I didn't shut the door and I'd have ignored it because it was just for a minute --- of course. Then shut the door and the sound went off, the car probably assumed I was in it then. I'm glad it didn't lock me out! Has to go into gear for that to happen. lol I have another key in the house somewhere, I think, should I have needed it.

DD had tried out for drum major too, but got some other leadership position, got a weekend retreat the following summer for leadership skills at a nearby UC that's near the ocean. We drove her there and brought a few other kids back. I don't remember if we took anyone else down with us. It's about an hour's drive.

You're welcome - we went through it all so recently... Our installer (and our builder) weren't familiar with cork or we might have used it in some rooms. It does look nice to have almost all the floors the same around the house, though.

Once cork is installed sealed it's pretty sturdy - remember my in-laws have had five boys and their father in that one bathroom (the other was strictly for Mum and SIL) for over 40 years, maybe 50. You do need to re-seal periodically. If there's a gouge or scratch deep enough not to be repaired simply by sealing, you get little cork granules to mix with sealer and pack it into the damaged area. After sealing it's not at all visible.

HTH!

Hi, I've been MIA.

Terrible storms Wed night then lost power early Thursday morning, restored early Friday morning.

But the damage was done and I got 9 inches of water in the finished basement. Lots of stuff soaked/damaged. Very tired from working down there.

Tomorrow a few of the walking group are coming over and we'll keep going through and tossing stuff and then mop everything down with a bleach solution. I'm worried about the drywall down there. May need to get the bottom part cut out.

Anyway, what a stress & a chore.

Oh my gosh, Marge. Oh my. Holy cow. That's a crap load of water. Wow.

I really wish I could come over there and help. Was there a pump that went off without power or no pump? Just curious. One of my sisters keeps dealing with basement water and a pump. Think it's all straight now but geez. She had a pump and then it didn't work and ... well, just a mess.

Oh man. I'm so sorry. Insurance?

Ye, a sump pump (actually two). It was actually keeping up with the horrendous storms.

Then the power goes out for 24 hours and the water pours in.

When the mad rush is very I'm going to go buy a generator.

There was one circulating in the neighborhood (95 homes). By the time I got home from work, I was 18th on the list. Then the owner of the generator started getting water so he quit loaning it out (understandably). Town declared a state disaster area. No generators or similar supplies to be found (mad run o the stores). Just getting to work Thursday was an adventure many roads closed for flooding.

And to top it off, we can't get the hot water heater pilot re-lit, and the furnace is blowing cold air. Just left a message for the plumber, they have an announcement on their phone warning of dire waits.

So we are cold too because, get this -->we had friggin' snow flurries last night.

I spent awhile up in DD's room. I want to empty the hall of the buckets of her pillows, blankets, throws, bedding but not so much sheets! Going back up to the cave in a minute. DH went into work.

We had a two day work stoppage of the picking up of the trash but they are out today picking up what we usually get picked up on Friday. The utility called us both nights with updates. Which was good, otherwise I'd have wondered why the trash wasn't picked up....

Ah thanks!

Leona & Jenny came over to help. Am exhausted but made good progress, All debris/waterladen trash is up in the garage waiting to be dragged to the curb tomorrow. All floors mopped with bleach solution.

Many, many stamp sets that were on the bottom shelves are now spread all over my LR floor drying out. And tons of photos, etc drying out. What a mess.

Especially the storage room, we are going to let thoroughly dry out before putting everything back and blocking air flow to the walls and floor. I might get rough wooden shelves built down there, sized to hold Steriite tubs. So I might live with "torn up but dry and sanitary" for awhile before setting everything to rights again.

Hot water heater finally got re-lit (we were having trouble) and furnace finally works again. But my dryer doesn't. Oh well, hot showers and warmth FTW! (We took 5 loads of clothes, towels, comforters that got drenched, etc over to Leona's sister to use her big Bosch dryer. Nice of her, her hubby ran all the loads through the dryer for us and we went back to pick them up.)

So, exhausting day but progress being made.

Marge. Go ahead and cut out the Sheetrock and then go up 2 foot higher... Dh parents house has flooded before with hurricanes and they ended up with a ton of mold because they did the minimum.

And if there is insulation in those walls then pull it all out......you'll never get the mold out of the insulation.

It will be a cost but you will appreciate it in the long run when you don't have mold... Insurance may not pay for it to all come out but do it anyway

It's weird because I also find all that stuff in Game of Thrones very offensive but also feel strongly that we need to understand and acknowledge that it's how most of the Western AND Eastern world has viewed women for pretty much all of human history.

I think for me, even although it's fiction, I feel as though it's important for women to understand what we've had to fight, and how insidious and enduring it remains. Although at the same time I worry about all the guy gamer-types who watch it. I've heard that women in online gaming and fantasy communities are not often treated much better than they are in Game of Thrones.

In some ways I think this is WAY more realistic than a lot of the damsel-in-distress movies out of Hollywood or fairy princess stuff from Disney, for all that it's also fiction. I guess I feel like that brutal and in-your-face a portrayal matters if it makes people talk about the implications of a lot of way-too-common attitudes.

Except it really wasn't an April Fools! There was an article a couple of days later called " Stories which should have been April Fools jokes but weren't!" That was one.
