Yeah I'm typically not seeing great reviews for the LG in anything.

I don't mind the noise if it's because of the filter self-cleaning, and I frequently run it when nobody else is home, or as I'm going up to bed.

It's on here too. As far as I know, it's been too warm. This is a very wet and windy storm - er sorry, series of three storms - but not cold ones. They're from Hawaii. Pineapple Express.

And yes it's not far from here. It says 19 miles on google maps but it's mostly highway. In fact, "my" Ikea is one exit further.

The other day, when I was coming home from the store, I realized that, from the top of my hill (about 3 blocks from home), I could see the new 49ers stadium frame that's up! It's pretty much straight west of me, about 8 miles away.

I just looked online and even the mountains here aren't that cold. I have to look as far as the Sierras to see any 30s, and mostly mid to high 30s at that.

But if you look a bit further north, to Mt. Shasta:
Mount Shasta: Is U.S. Snowstorm Record in Jeopardy? - weather.com

But I can't see that from here.

Holy crap, that's a LOT of snow.

Are they predicting a big snowfall in the Sierras around Lake Tahoe, too?

I don't know much about the teams from the western U.S., but I guess I'm glad that Stanford won tonight. I like how they play the train whistle when they score. And the non-acronym "Ucla" rather than UCLA annoys me.

That's pretty cool.

Let's see... from the hilltops near us, we can see the Blue Ridge mountains to the east, and the Appalachians to the west. Nothing really noteable in between us and the mountains, LOL. But I don't think we can see into West Virginia.

However, West Virginia is in the very background of this photo. This was taken at a marching competition a couple years ago. Remember the football team that practically tried to kill ours a couple years ago, then we defeated them this year when it was their homecoming? This is their stadium.

We got some of that action today - I actually lost power for awhile and there are tons of trees down plus the creeks are pushing out gravel from the hills, which only happens when it really really rains.

Before the last few years they called a storm that caused the creeks to drag gravel down onto the roads (making them impassable) a hundred-year storm. Since we've had three of them in the last six years, I think they're going to have to re-think that designation...

No - well I haven't heard much on the ski resorts but hard to tell. I haven't seen pics of chains at the mountain passes, or anything like that. Just worrying about flooding north of here. When I looked at temps around the lake, they were high 30s to 40.

I didn't care who won, thought. Figured Mark Harmon probably roots for UCLA. ha ha ha

From the top of our hill, the stadium is way down in the valley, it's at sea level, just south of the south end of the Bay. But I can see the mountains to the west (coastal ridge) and east all the time - unless they're fogged in. lol

But my house itself is too low down the hill to see into the valley well, plus we're surrounded by other houses. The top of the hill is pretty steep.

Yeah it's tough, just have to pick a price range and go for it. lol I don't want something too expensive, doesn't have to be "the best" just do a decent job.

Will be leaving in about an hour to walk at the Blackwell Forest Preserve with Donna (from walking group). Haven't been to Blackwell in about 20 years. It'll get to over 50 degrees today so can't pass that up, in December in Illinois!

Wrose, if your kids are leaving the nest, you won't need such a "good" dishwasher. Honestly with two people it is often just as easy to wash the dishes by hand. I use my dishwasher only 4-5 times a year. So if I were you I would just get a moderate one, no need for all the fancy features.

Beautiful (and great photo of DS also).

One thing that I greatly miss, living in flat Illinois, is the beauty of the hills and mountains. Whenever I go back to PA, it strikes me.

I get what you're saying about the storms.

In January 1996, a few weeks after the blizzard, we had rain that helped melt the snow. The river near us flooded and they called it a 100 year flood. Then in September 1996, the remnants of Hurricane Fran caused a 500 year flood.

I was talking about how they write it. On the helmets, it says "Ucla", which looks like it's supposed to be a word. If it was "UCLA" it wouldn't bother me.

We jokingly refer to them as "uck-luh".

Yes.

Now the factors I'm considering are - the house is high end as far as market goes and if we go to sell for any reason before this d/w dies, I don't want the cheapest thing out there. Also Consumer Reports says the real cheap ones don't even clean well. But I never would get all the extra fancy features anyway. So I'm aiming for bottom of the threshold of machines that clean well but don't have fancy features.

According to CR, I can expect to pay around $800 for that. That seems a lot to me, but that's listed price, and I know I've already looked at some and they go on sale cheaper. So I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks!

What's weird is:

i before e, except after c
Or when sounded as a as in neighbor or weigh.

Well okay the house is high end compared to what I grew up with. It's in a good area and it would be stupid to put crap in it.

When I get the kitchen remodeled (hopefully next year) the d/w can just stay. But again I have to choose something that will sell well, but not pay too much but not get crap. lol

Make sense? We paid about 450K for this house and since then, with market fluctuations, I've always felt like we could get at least 650K for it, depending on condition.

Make sure it has four feet. I have one that has three. I don't know why they designed it that way. But I don't use it often enough to be worried about it getting knocked over.

LG generally sucks.

Thanks, Rainsong. I love their ads, so high tech looking, and then I look at CR and say, Um, I don't think so.

Ours was $900 (we got white b/c I don't like stainless - I imagine for resale you'll have to get stainless) from AJ Madison, an online appliance store. I wouldn't recommend them, though their prices on all our appliances were fabulous. We had two different dishwashers delivered, both arrived damaged.

After all the frustration of dealing with the deliveries and damage I phoned a local independent appliance store and they matched the price without a quibble. They provide appliance repair, too, so I think they have a vested interest in ensuring an excellent customer service experience.

Make sense? We paid about 450K for this house and since then, with market fluctuations, I've always felt like we could get at least 650K for it, depending on condition.
People who invest moderately in bathroom and kitchen renovations generally get their money back and then some. Bathrooms typically get 100% of their money back and kitchens just a bit less (98.5%).

If you are thinking of selling in the future (and I know you are) this is a good article on what upgrades to make to get the most for your money.

Oh yeah. I've always had an interest in housing - from design to decoration, just never had the money to do like in the magazines. Always have an ear out for the real estate market. I know the kitchen is a great place to put the money. Of course I don't want to go overboard. Knowing the general characteristics of this neighborhood, does certainly influence my decision.

I would also not hesitate to have our garage "done" (if we were younger, I'd say "do it this summer"). That is walls painted (ours are not) and nice shelving installed where you want it, etc. etc. Counters, places to put stuff and hang stuff. I've driven by some of them in this neighborhood and I *know* it would make an impression on any possible buyer. That's not high on my list, though, as the house does need some basic repairs in the next few years. (Already on the list)

The floor in our kitchen is already torn up in a few spots but there's no sense in putting down a new floor when the cupboards are very worn and I think new ones would be a wise investment. Not sure I sold DH on that yet.

At any rate, because all the built ins (d/w, oven, stove top) are 25 years old, it needs more than a minor remodel. It needs major work. All the appliances, d/w, oven, microwave, stove top, fridge; yeah that's a chunk right there. But I want to get the d/w right now because this one is completely broke now (it had been limping along for awhile). The fridge is hanging in there, the oven is nucking futs, you almost don't know what to expect when you put something in there; the microwave is fine but weak; and it's built in with the oven so they both go..... the stove top um yeah it's going.

There you have it. The cupboards are worn. A whole new kitchen. The plastic things in the ceiling are cracked. I can do new lighting if I want. Counters have cracked and broken tiles. Sink is okay but would be silly to not update that too.

Oh yeah I was thinking I don't care about that, stainless costs 100 more and at the point I expect to sell, it won't matter. I expect to be in this house for at least another 8 years, minimum. And CR says 10 year expected life of a d/w these days. So if we still have it, it'll be old anyway. lol

I'd rather put the $100 into a decent oven.
I have wondered if I should look at convection ovens, y'all know how much I cook. I can get gas or electric, both are available, I have had electric here since we moved in.

Lots of decisions to make. Right now though, the d/w.

'Sokay, Wrose. Stainless is out. Most people hate having to constantly wipe it down to remove fingerprints.

I posted about it in some other thread (who knows where) the "new" color is WHITE! Specifically--White Ice by Whirlpool. Whirlpool® Ice Collection Freestanding

Neat article about trends here: White is becoming a clear star across a broad range of kitchen styles and with all manner of appliances

No sense re-doing the kitchen in something that will be out-dated by the time it's up and running.

Oh, and count on about 6 mths without a kitchen. Since you don't cook, shouldn't be difficult!

Oh I thought you were talking about the INSIDE! The tub - stainless goes for about 100 more, they said, and doesn't stain like white.

I don't care about the outside at all. I won't pay extra for a color or non-color, that's all. lol
