Wow, E, that's horrible.

When we were in Florida, we had a police woman come to our Catholic women's group meeting one night to talk about safety and security and stuff. One of the things she told us was, never to go if the guy tries to make you leave. She said, if you go, you will be dead. If they are going to kill you, make them do it there before they force you to an isolated location.

These ladies are very very lucky they are alive.

i think what saved their lives is the fact that they did know him. he was like a second father to these kiddos... he couldn't kill them himself - he was going to make his partner do it and evidently he forgot to tell the partner about taht part of the plan... luckily the partner was like oh heck no.

Stuck in the fifties.
The 1450s I think. Remember, these are the folks who took about 400 years to admit that Galileo *might* have had a point, and maybe they weren't very nice to him. Sigh.

My very favorite tweet on the new Pope (no, not on Twitter... friend sent it to me): Hoping the Catholic Cardinals made a Harlem Shake video right after they picked the new pope.

Seriously, they should have. I'll bet that would have gotten lots of us to go straight back to Mass first thing Sunday morning!

This happened in the last couple years, my anger at what they've done, and moreso, how they've continued to handle it.
I'm angry at the church despite still believing.

Although the older I get the more I appreciate the big lesson of history, literature, and frankly the Bible: that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to human nature. People have always been complicated: some greedy, come generous. Some greedy in some ways and hugely generous in others. There have always been people who live life with a pure and very deep joy and those who corrupt everything around them by grasping after power, and in between lots of people who wrestle with their flaws with greater or lesser success. People who need to think independently and people who fear what might happen if they push the boundaries.

Aristotle thought the kids of his day were disrespectful.

My car friend up in Winston is an athiest, but when I was having of my moments of real crisis about going to church he said to me, just because a lot of people do it badly doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

I think it's very odd if absolutely delightful that several of the most profound and encouraging insights I've gotten about faith have come from my athiest and agnostic friends.

I guess I just feel like the world is a huge mess, and whatever combination or exclusion of reason and/or faith and/or philosophy and/or anything else gets us through the day and night, and helps us live with compassion and peace and a sense of purpose is a positive good. If we can all exchange those perspectives in friendship and understanding, that's a positive good too.

My heart doesn't just go out to the 2 women but to the son who must have felt so powerless when they were abducted. I hope they are all able to get counseling to get through that.

Awww, that gave me goose bumps. See that's the thing, these people have decided for themselves and don't presume to decide for others. Sure we'll discuss when it's appropriate, but it's not like we're out to deconvert people. Well, maybe Dawkins is. lol Actually I have a feeling he just had his fill of stupid people through the years. I don't mean believers, I mean stupid people. Most atheists aren't that militant, they simply want to be able to not believe and not be tortured about it (or their cars keyed).

Steve made it home last night. Flight was delayed, he got in sometime after midnight. That was a long & tiring week.

He's sleeping so I don't know other than tiring travel, how it went. Left a 3:15am Tues, back after midnight Fri.

Steve says he enjoyed the desert terrain. It's the first time he has been west of the Mississippi.

He goes back next week.

Went to grocery store.
Had sloppy joes for lunch.
Later today I will make Steve's birthday cake - "green cake" -- pistachio bundt cake. He is a St Patrick's day baby.

He got the spring heat! Did he catch any spring training games. They all moved to Phoenix a couple of years ago. I'm watching England Wales play rugby. Exciting game.

Nice! But you obviously were not an Irish Catholic family or you'd have named him Patrick!

Oh wait! Let's see. I have a bunch of aunts and uncles, my dad had 7 siblings, there were 5 boys and 3 girls. Well four girls, one died young. Anyway, none of them named Patricia or Patrick. The last one, the youngest boy, was born on St. Pat's Day. They named him Donald. WTH? They WERE an Irish Catholic family! I never understood that!!! I mean you don't HAVE to but why not? lol

We talked about naming him Patrick but we had already chosen Steve, liked it better. And Patrick can be shortened to Pat which is both male & female. Also just seemed a bit cliche-ish...

The whole story is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for the victims but I'm glad they had, in relative terms, a good ending.

That's precisely why I hate that nickname.

We didn't know ODS's gender before he was born, but MIL wanted us to include Patrick in his name if he was a boy. Um, no thank you - as close as it is to my name, and it being DH's middle name, and DH having an Uncle Pat and an Aunt Patsy, we felt the name was well represented enough.

In the end, I think she was satisfied that ODS is named after both his grandfathers.

I'm glad you had fun, though. And Sonic.

The band boosters had a chicken BBQ today.

The boys headed over to the school around 6:30 to help out with it. The earlybirds had been there since 5:00 to get the fires started in the pit and to pull the fat off the chicken (gross!) and make the sauce. YDS helped pretty much with whatever he was told to do. ODS did as many things as he could that did not involve touching unwrapped chicken, LOL. Being a licensed driver with a small SUV proved to be valuable for him today. Ha ha ha

I headed over to the school around 9:15 to help wrap the chicken after it was cooked. Most of the chicken was pre-ordered so I helped get orders together when people came to pick it up, too.

We got rained on only a few times and not for very long, and the day ended up being warmer than we expected, so it wasn't too bad.

But my back and feet are tired.
