Aha! I see what you mean. I wasn't worried about that but it's also why I limit alcohol intake at festive occasions (which I know WW advocates). I don't want to get too de-inhibited when I'm around cheese or chips and dip.

I think part of the problem--for all of us--is processed foods plus lack of exercise. One thing that helped me was reading several articles in Mother Jones over the years and a couple of Michael Pollan's books and several other studies about how we've turned food, and in particular, animals, into industrialized production output. For one thing, in the push to increase the yield of meat on an animal, we pump cows and pigs full of hormones to pump them up and restrict movement to keep muscle from toughening. Cows, which are ruminants who naturally eat grass, are fed corn, which is far cheaper--but which their digestive systems are not designed to tolerate, so we need to pump them full of antibiotics so they can bulk up on a cheap food they weren't ever meant to eat. So you produce a more tender meat partly by marbling it with fat (some of which would be burned off through exercise in animals that roam for forage) but mostly by artifically manipulating the animal's biology to turn the cow or pig into a weight gaining machine. To maximize profit you use the cheapest possible feed.

Basically we have cheap meat and dairy because of animal cruelty on a hugely efficient industrial scale. A lot of industrial food producers and vendors are now campaigning on a huge scale to roll back USDA Organic certification criteria because as people have tried to eat more organic food, they've seen a new vector for profit--but stringent rules for organic make it tough to do things cheaply. I've always respected that part of what makes mean kosher or halal involves dealing with the animals and their slaughter for food in a humane manner, to ensure they feel no fear. I think that's a very fair way to live in gratitude for our nourishment. I think it's kind of interesting how what's best for us, animals and the planet in general is not what maximizes profits, although the flip side is that industrializing production has allowed people who would not have been able to afford meat 50 or 100 years ago to make it a regular part of their diet.

I guess when I think about things in those terms, and in terms of staying fit, I tend to eat better and keep my weight down without thinking about it in terms of dieting, and over the years, that's worked way better for me than thinking about what I can't have or have to limit. Maybe I should write a book about the geopolitical, anti-cruelty diet... Sigh.

Plus the more I exercise the more I crave salads, protein, and fresh veggies. It's just that pushing myself back into that cycle is hard. I guess kind of like getting a bicycle back up and rolling from a standstill as opposed to just keeping the movement going. And having to do it pointed uphill.

Hi
PH congrats to your boy!
We went to the zoo today. It was a really nice day. They have a blonde gibbon. It is so cool looking! We even got to see the elusive elk and bison! I tried to eat good there. Snacked on carrots a few salami slices, some cheese and water. But I did have a few mouthfuls of cotton candy. I actually do much better if I just do no sweets at all. I CAN limit myself to three Hershey Kisses in a day but the cravings after a day or two of that are insane.
Made a yummy dinner and I'm leaving those dishes right where they lay. I can clean up the table and kitchen tomorrow.

Hi. We met some friends out at the Desert Museum this morning. It has been a very windy day, kicking up lots of dust. Made macaroons and granola bars and cilantro rice and took it over to said friends for dinner. Lovely day. Cilantro kitten is doing really well. His fur is beginning to grow back and he's more like himself.

The kids are both reading in bed. Their Read-a-Thon starts today. For the next 15 days they have to read a certain number of minutes each day. Suggested for their grades is 20 mins each day. My kids always read at least 60 so that's what they have said they will do for this! Nice and quiet.

We just do a flat amount for them. Our neighbours all have kids at the school so we don't hit them up. Got the grandparents to sponsor them - now we just have to hope they send the cash!

I used to hit up my family for stuff like that, and the hit-a-thon in Little League; I told my family back home that they were lucky they lived far away and we weren't trying to sell crap to them all year long.

We have really no kids around. On our street nearest us Zach is the oldest, then a girl a year younger than he, then Jacob and a girl a year younger than that. So we hit up the really close to us folks lol But we have relationships with them. I don't do the whole door to door stuff

The really close ones are the ones with the kids. We don't door to door either. The kids sponsor each other.

So I don't think I told you all my little brother was in the hospital early friday morning for a little more than a few hours. He's super sick and was dehydrated like a few hours after the "explosive and urgent total evacuation of everything in his body" so he was on IV and meds and then came home. Well he just texted me to see if we had any Immodium AD. I didn't. Did he want me to get some? nah. I can so Lala (what we call SIL) can stay home and help you. Nah she's been vomiting too. "I'll just sleep in the bathtub" he says ROFL!
So I ran to Target and got them all kinds of things to help and dropped a bag full of meds, crackers, soup and 7up. How lucky is he? lol

Oh got a text back "you're the best. Love you. Owe you 1"

My Uncle Chuck died this evening in a nursing home in Florida. He had made funeral arrangements to be buried in PA next to my Aunt who died about 6 or 7 years ago. I don't know if a service is planned; he was 92 so very few friends left alive. My other Aunt in PA is in the hospital and not enough strength to get out of bed, so she has not been told yet. A third Aunt and some cousins are all that is left of the relatives in PA.

If there is a service, I will try to drive out for it. It is about an 8 hour trip. But another snowstorm is expected Tuesday?? I won't drive in a storm but I doubt if the body would be transferred that quickly.

I'm sorry, Marge. Do you have memories of Uncle Chuck? I mean, was he someone who was around the family when you were growing up, etc. Family dinners and all that? I saw more of some than others in my family.....

There was one who was the youngest and basically pickled his liver. Been gone awhile. Born on St. Pat's Day and they named him Donald in an Irish Catholic family of a bunch of kid and no Patrick yet. WTH.

How lucky is he? lol
Wow, V, you're a great sister! I hope that thing doesn't come down here! I have been washing my hands real good whenever I come in from being out, all winter long.

Yes, I have good memories. He and my Aunt Amber (my dad's oldest sister) had moved to Florida in the 50's because of her severe allergies. Back then the drugs weren't as good to control seasonal allergies.

They visited PA annually, each summer and after we moved back there from Honduras, they stayed with us on their annual visits because we had a guest room. He was a very nice, gentle man. They had one grown son who served 2 tours in Vietnam and had PTSD and worked off and on as a security guard till he died a few years ago. That broke their hearts.

After I moved to IL in 1980, I saw him every 2 or 3 years at the family reunion. Recently the last time I saw him was at my Aunt's funeral, about 6 years ago. He became to frail to travel. But his remaining friends were in FL so he stayed there in a Veteran's nursing home. I do have one cousin in Cocoa Beach and they would go to Orlando monthly to see him, and his 2 VFW friends stopped in every few days. They say his mind started going a year ago and he signed a no extraordinary measures form (no feeding tube, etc). This I just found out about yesterday.

IMO, it's one thing to put a bowl of "community candy" out on one's desk - stuff like peppermint patties or fun size candy bars or Hershey Kisses.

But the idea of unwrapped stuff like jelly beans as community candy is ICK.

Thanks, everyone, for all the congratulations and stuff toward ODS.

Once again, he's the only person from his school who was definitely placed into All-State.

One other student qualified as a second alternate on his instrument - which means that if, for some reason, two of the students who qualified better than he did have to bow out, then he can participate.
