It's kind of amazing to think that our Pond will be turning 8 years old this year.

Happy New Year. Mine started with snow and a killer migraine Very dehydrated ( no, not from alcohol) so the EMT friends we stayed with overnight gave me fluids through IV at 10am. Different way so start the New Year.

football has sucked... everyone in the sec west that mattered has lost (A&M and Arkansas don't count)...

Alabama will probably end up winning which will suck even more because then the blowhards will be even cockier and more obnoxious...

Got up and went to Mass this morning. and then came home and started clearing out again. My words for the New Year are Minimize and Simplify. I think that's better than a resolution - the minimize can be junk and food.. Simplify will work for the extras as well as a workout so that I will continue doing it...

Did I mention i found an original bowie knife of Japanese steel... It's at least 50 years old... and sharp as heck. Collector friend of mine said it's worth about $150... Maybe a little less since it has been well used...

Yeah - I found it mixed in with her corn knobs and chip clips from the kitchen drawers...

DH is home!

He swapped out the monitor ODS had set up for me with another monitor we had here. Not sure if he changed the cable to it too, but anyway, this one is MUCH better than the other one. It isn't as large as the one that died, but at least this one has a clearer output than the first replacement.

ERK, hope you're doing okay!

E, the ACC has been proving it's superiority over the SEC.

However, Oregon seems to be another matter entirely!

Home.
We had to drive to three baseball diamond options to find one that wasn't fenced and locked. Two were attached to schools so I can kind of understand but there is so little public space accessible anymore.
After we hit run caught and hit some more we went to our favorite Chinese restaurant. Had it all to ourselves. Delicious lunch and hot tea.
Then we went to walmart so the boys could spend Christmas gift cards. Zach got a Lego set ad Jacob picked a tee ball bat and a football tee (confused?). Then we went to lowes to return a trash can (too small) and bought some new white lights because our current white lights will be trashed after this year. We lost three strands the beginning of the season.
And finally we went to target looking to buy some food items. No luck. Bought ziplock bags and three rolls wrapping paper instead lol.

Now relaxing

we're not allowed to lock our sports fields - they were bought with public funds and they must be accessible to the public.

i had a DUCK when i found that out when the girls were in elementary school...

In Florida, the whole school grounds was fenced off, no access to playground or anything. Insurance? Whatever. Out here, everything was open.

I can understand a high school baseball field being inaccessible. They spend a lot of money to get the grass and field in shape and keep it nice.

Have I been to that Chinese restaurant?? Has Jane?

Happy New Year my friends!

Celebrated with friends from town where I lived 26 years ago--we all now live in the same state again, 2-3 hours apart and New Year's is still our annual get-together. This year we met at my house for the first time so I had my 2nd house party in 10 days!

Wonderful evening and great way to start the year.

A bit scary to realize we've all been friends for going on 30 years... yikes!

Interesting discussion of getting older now that we're all hitting or have hit 50. The whole principle of slowing down a bit so we can keep going vs getting despondent over not being in our 20s any more, and the perspective that comes with having been around for a while and gone through or seen people we're close to go though difficult times--who's hung in there and who's gotten caught up in things that don't matter to us any more. Friends who can make you laugh and make you think over that many decades are a gift, and folks who were there and went through all those life events with you and 'knew you when' are a gift too.

What's funny is that I was telling them about all of you and I realized that if all of you had been sitting around the fire laughing with us, I think everyone--my old friends and all of you--would have been equally at home with each other. It's been so much fun when friends from different parts of my life have met, even better when they've developed their own friendships.

So Happy New Year to all of you! Hugs and warmest hopes for health, happiness, and prosperity in the New Year! And lots of laughter too.

Ugh, just remembered... if you eat soft French cheese such as brie or camembert with any kind of fruit juice, it tastes like vomit.

Oddly it was the nicest fields we could get into. It's between two schools and the campuses are closed but not the parkway between. About a city block between the actual schools. We had a blast.
And yes you and Jane have had the pleasure.

We have a ton of park district fields, all over town, which are always open. I think the elementary school fields were open, don't really remember. I'm pretty sure the high school one is locked.

So over the summer/fall I had been collecting old hanging lanterns to light with candles and hang them in the front and back courtyards for a 'firefly' effect once dusk fell. I got them at the flea market and thrift stores. I have collected around 7. I used them on Christmas, very festive, hung from branches, plant hangers, sat on the patio chairs. The practical side is that it lights up the front courtyard which is dark, when people go out to their cars, and in the back courtyard you can see them flickering through the sliding glass doors and it is pretty.

Well the walking group is doing a gift exchange on the 11th, at my house. Before Xmas, both Leona and Hiroe were in Asia, and schedules got busy. So I am doing a late afternoon wine and appetizer thing. I just spent an hour cleaning out the candle wax from the lanterns leftover from their use on Christmas. Plus I had run out of votive size and really did not want to buy more since I have 2 big dresser drawers full of various candles. But the pillar candles were too wide to fit in to the lanterns. I picked out some half-burned down pillars and just spent about another 45 minutes shaving the sides down to make them fit. Harder than I thought, but I did it! Yeah -- will use up partially burned pillars from my stash and no need to buy more. I feel so virtuously frugal

More frugality, don't laugh at me please. In late summer I ran out of body / shower wash. Of course I put it on my list to buy more. Then I thought -- wait -- I have a big shoebox full of soaps: handmade soaps, soaps from France, guest bath soaps that people have gifted me over time. All much too pretty to use so they just sit in a shoebox in my linen cupboard.

I forced myself to start using them, they have been there since I moved in 7 years ago (which means they sat around at my old house too) and some added to the 'collection'. Why was I hoarding soap because it was "too good" to use? And taking up my limited storage space too? So right now I am enjoying handmade glycerin soap with lavender. I've made a very good dent in the box, only three bars left.

OK, 'fess up. Do you hoard pretty/nice soaps?

OK, so dilemna...the walkers gift exchange is the 11th. It's a Christmas function (albeit very late). I will leave out my angel collection. I simplified the dining room table from a huge centerpiece that went most of its length to just a simpler center candle one. I'll leave the outdoor wreaths up -- the rules allow seasonal decorations till Jan 15. But, the question is, should I leave the tree and mantel decorations up? Only Leona and Susan saw the tree. I am thinking that I will, because I put it up fairly late and because I have time in January to take it down. Not like when I was working and I always tried to take it down before I went back to work.

Yup, I figure might as well use it up. Or you could regift it, and let someone else hoard it because it is too pretty to use

Gift it to me and I'll use it! I'm worth pretty soap being used on.

You guys are great, I've been doing the same thing, using stuff up, including pretty soap, especially the glycerin ones. In fact, I no longer use anything but glycerin soaps, otherwise my skin itches afterward. I bought a lot of body oils before I learned that.

You can also find a shelter or free cycle things that you know you won't use, aren't a scent you can stomach, etc.
