ARGH.

Hope you feel better, Kathy.

Hope you warm up Marge.

It's snowing here, gorgeous, sticking, looking like we'll all be WFH tomorrow. This town shuts down for an inch of snow.

I'm not scared to drive in it--I drove a good 300 miles over sheets of ice with a little sand on them in Alaska. But drivers up there understand the physics of momentum and zero traction. Drivers here don't. So I'm pretty sure I could get the car uptown, just don't want to risk getting mowed down by some yutz who thinks if you're driving and SUV you can go 70, tailgate the people driving properly for the conditions, and stop whenever you want. Um, no you can't and I don't want to end up like a bug on your ginormous windshield. Sigh.

Traffic guy just said there have been so many accidents since the snow started that he's lost count.

I rest my case.

I've had the weather channel on all day. DD posted a bunch of pics of the snow and Pippin in the back yard in the snow. Not too much but fun. Apparently they had problems because everyone left work and schools at the same time.

It's snowing lightly here again. We have about an inch so far.

So maybe I won't have to work tomorrow after all. The county hasn't made the call yet.

I can't help but wonder if the elementary school's head custodian has a snowplow blade for the lawn mower, so he can ride around to clear the sidewalks instead of having to use a traditional snow shovel.

He seemed fine with it earlier. It has kept snowing and now there's no grass sticking up or anything, and she wrote that she let him out again and he was like, not thrilled. lol!!!!

I'm a tiny bit annoyed. Sunday and Monday evenings we received the automated call from the school superintendent about the two-hour delays by 6:30 p.m. But tonight, they still haven't announced a decision about tomorrow. Which means we most likely won't know until around 6:15 tomorrow morning whether there's a two-hour delay or no school.

Predicted wind chills between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. tomorrow are either single digit or below zero, so I think there's no possibility that school would open on time.

Thanks, yes it's still hard. DD and DS were ready, too. Cookie seemed very confused and clingy for the first few days, but he's okay now.

The kids are already asking for a kitten, but I'm holding out until DH gets a job (if he ever does) in our area.

DD was offered the use of a llama this last weekend, though, and we may take advantage of that.

The alpaca she had been working with had to be euthanized a few weeks ago due to an incurable mouth tumor. She's been very upset.

The available animals at the farm are less trainable - they've been field animals for many years and only worked with for a few months each over the last couple years, and they're still pretty skittish without promise of improvement.

We went to a camelid training weekend (brrr!) and one of the other leaders, after hearing DD say she wanted to own a llama, approached me regarding a llama she knows. Her club member owns a llama and is off to college then grad school, and wants to board her llama until she has her own place, and prefers a 4H member train with her llama. So, with her school goals we're looking at minimum 6-10 years, which is perfect for DD who will finish HS in 6 years. And the llama could be part of the packing string our leader has, which would belay some of the expense.

So we're investigating the opportunity and hoping it works out for DD. Plus for her - knowing she can work with the same animal for years, and potentially train him to haul a cart, which is tremendously fun and not possible with alpacas. Plus for me is knowing she has an animal that I don't have to keep for her once she graduates and heads off for college, LOL.

I'm so sorry so many of you are experiencing such cold weather... It's really hard if you're not used to it, and even if you are used to it, it starts to get tiresome around now, doesn't it?!

Just to clarify, I meant the sidewalks connecting all the pods to the other buildings, not simply the sidewalks connecting the parking lot to the office and cafeteria building. (My mental picture was of him riding between the first and third grade buildings - I guess because that's part of the longest stretch of sidewalk.)

Yes.

I can't recall the last time we've had so many days in January where the highs didn't get above freezing.

Even in 2009-2010 when we had all the blizzards, I don't remember it being this cold. It had to have been fairly cold for the snow to stay around as long as it did, but I don't remember so many days with single digit lows and highs below 20°.

It's not just the cold.
Our Chicago winters are always cold.
It's the extreme dangerously cold that can give frostbite to exposed skin in 5 minutes.
That's what I'm getting really, really tired of.

Yeah, I hear ya. I know it matters what you are used to and prepared for. I know most people in the Bay Area don't have what I would call a real winter coat. They have a heavier jacket. lol

It was interesting seeing Atlanta all over the evening news.

We never get to hear if school is closed until the morning - in the old days we had to listen to local radio to find out! In the past few years they have introduced text messaging. Fortunately it's a rare occurrence here. Must be frustrating if it happens a lot.

Must go to the store today--just waiting until temps get above 10°.

Fought with hot water pipe in kitchen yesterday. Ended up having to call a plumber. Fortunately DH's friend, Joe, happens to have a son who does plumbing. He came, he crawled into crawl space, thawed, showed me where main cut-off is located, and only charged me $40.

And in case anyone is wondering, yes, I left the taps dripping overnight but the hot water decided to turn itself off. You get a nice steady drip going and next thing ya know--nada. Made sure it was open far more last night and I built up the fire last night before bed. Ice cube weather!

When I was growing up, that was the best thing about listening to the radio station my parents liked to have on in the mornings!

The TV stations also are given the information, and will post the closings in a "crawl" at the bottom of the screen.

Our county just started the automated calling about 5 years ago. The superintendent records the announcement, and then the automated system dials all the pertinent phone numbers in the county to broadcast the announcement. This year our calls have been coming in around 6:10 a.m. It's kind of a startling way to wake up (my school day alarm is set for 6:30 because the boys don't need to get out of bed until 6:45).

When the weather's been especially bad and the school officials know road conditions won't improve overnight, they'll frequently make the decision to close the evening before. So it'll be on the TV during prime time, and we get the phone call usually by 6:30 p.m. It's nice knowing early because that way you have the chance to sleep late.

And then of course we can also check for closings or delays on the county's website and/or the TV stations' websites.

The phone calls always start out with either "Good morning" or "Good evening", and then "This is Joe Smith, Superintendent of our county schools."* Then he'll go on to say something like "Due to dangerous, icy road conditions in many parts of the county, schools will be closed on" and he gives the date.

A few days ago, one of my band mom friends posted on FB that by now, the superintendent should just start his calls with "Hey, it's me again!" LOL

*That's not his real name and he says the name of the county, but I'm not posting the personal info here.

Rainsong, that was a cheap fix for a plumber! Glad you are staying warm. I've got so many friends, so cold, etc. Sister's water main broke, she has NO water now. My BFF back east, her water died out around 7:30 tonight - they had been warned. They had to turn it off to do repairs - for a couple days - it's freezing - you can pick up drinking water at the fire stations, bring your own container, that's what sister is doing. Shower? Find a friend not in the zone. lol

So after the rain moved through overnight, it was crisper and clearer today. Not cold at all, high 50s, but just nice. We might get another sprinkle overnight.

I'm here. Thawing out.
Now 5-10 inches of more snow is coming Saturday. We've already had > 50 inches this winter.

Plus have been swamped at work. The people in FLA have been sucking our brains out. Called 'knowledge transfer' in corporate speak.

Oh Marge, that's a lot of snow. Can you recommend they truck the extra out to the Sierras? We could use it.......

A few days ago, one of my band mom friends posted on FB that by now, the superintendent should just start his calls with "Hey, it's me again!" LOL

LOL, couldn't cope with a phone call that early! When they went high-tech we'd get a text message on our mobile phone.

Secondary school don't send anything out as far as I can remember - I just look on the school website or Twitter account for info. It's so near that they can/could just walk home if necessary.
