Well said Rachel. See Jess? It's okay to put limits. Not easy. But okay.

How does this sound? Clear, but not too much of a cheapo?
-----------------------------------

Hey Chris,

I'm sorry I missed the dress shopping last weekend, but it looks like you guys picked a good one! The cost is ok with me, but I do feel like I need to put it out there right up front that I am going to have to watch what I spend for some of the other expenses. I feel like a jerk even having to bring it up, but between my mortgage, condo fees, my property taxes going up again, etc. I just don't have a lot of wiggle room in my budget. So while the dress is totally fine, I just felt like I needed to give you a heads up that I may have to cut corners with other things, like maybe the bachelorette party or something like that. Obviously I don't know yet how things will play out, and will do my absolute best to be a part of everything, but I thought it was better to let you know that now and make sure you know that if I end up not being able to go to your bachelorette party or something, it's not because I don't want to, it's that I'm just plain broke!

Just know that I love you and I'm SO happy for you and Sean! Have fun with the cake tasting on Saturday!

The other wedding I was in, the bride's sister and mother threw the shower.

I'm getting a little nervous for this one, because my cousin's maid of honor sent out an email saying that the place they've booked for the shower costs $22/person. So does that mean she intends that the whole bridal party splits this thing??
I would think it is on the hostess...usually sister, cousin or mother...but one that OFFERS

Jess...it sounds great, but maybe instead of Just the Bachlorette Party say Bachlorette Party, Hair, etc....so she knows it isn't just a matter of paying for your drinks at one outing...

Ok, I'll fix it. Thanks!

If the bachelorette party was just going to be drinks, that would be fine. But they're talking about going to Atlantic City, getting a few hotel rooms for the night, etc. So it's going to be a few hundred dollars at least. I just don't think I can do it.

Gosh! This is so over the top! I've been on bachelorette party trips, but they have all been in driving distance.

Over the top describes my cousin and her friends to a T!

Atlantic City would be within driving distance, though moreso for the rest of the girls since they all live in New Jersey. I guess I should be thankful I don't need to buy a plane ticket like for my friend Marie's bachelorette party in Miami 5 years ago!

If I get married, I want my bachelorette party to be one night out. Dinner and drinks or dinner and a show or something like that. Fun, but relatively low key and inexpensive.

Were there some girls that were going to try to do Green tea more?

I found these packets of Liquid Peach Green tea (it comes in unflavored too) that you can put in ice cold water...no dissolving powder! It is sweetened with Sucalose...but just a smidge

Bingo!!

This cousin that's getting married is the same one I've told you guys about who built up $25,000 in credit card debt while living at home (so her only bills were her car payment and cell phone) because she likes designer stuff. She's super generous and buys my aunt Coach bags and Tiffany jewelry for Christmas, but she can't afford it.

She makes me feel like a schmuck because I barely spend anything on my mom. Plus, when my aunt turned 50, my cousin rented out a banquet hall and threw her a big party. My mom threw herself her own 50th bday party! I feel like a bad daughter, but at the same time, my mom has said she would smack me if I ever even thought about going into debt to buy her a gift or throw her a party.

Oh no! I saw it at the end of the bar at one point, but I think you might have worn it after that. It definitely wasn't there anymore when we were cleaning up to leave.

Say 50 people come, and I imagine it might be more than that, that works out to about $140 from each of us, and that's before tax and gratuity and everything is added in. If we do the mimosa fountain, that's another $20 from each of us.
usually the hostess pays for the shower or at least splits it with the bride's mom.

At least it is within driving distance for them.

That's what I did. I didn't really even want a bachelorette party. I'm all for fun times with friends, but all the other wedding stuff is expensive enough.

The last time I saw it it was on the end of the counter in the evening. I don't remember seeing it when I wiped the counters down before bed.

Jess--don't feel bad or compare yourself to your cousin. Your mom gave you good advice. Don't spend that kind of $$ on 'things'.

There's just no good reason to go into debt to give gifts. I'll bet her mother would have been just as pleased to spend a nice quality day with her daughter. (Or I hope she would) She'll be paying on that for years. You are so wise to be aware of your spending.

There's just no good reason to go into debt to give gifts. I'll bet her mother would have been just as pleased to spend a nice quality day with her daughter. (Or I hope she would) She'll be paying on that for years. You are so wise to be aware of your spending.
I know, you're right. It's not even so much that I wish I could be like her or spend like she does, it's more that I'm afraid she won't understand when I say I can't afford something or won't just use my credit card for things.

But I really can't use my cc anymore. I had started to rely on it too much so now I'm back to only buying something if I can use cash/debit card. I may even leave my cc at home so I'm not even tempted.

I hated having to tell myself no last year. I had a good goal in paying down debt, but it wasn't easy. My coworkers even made fun of me when they went ot my favorite place to eat. RooooooooooD! LOL

Now, I just need to get back to basics. I've been pretty spendy for a while now.

You did really well, Tracy! I can't believe they made fun of you!

As Dave would say -- Rice and Beans. Beans and Rice. Well, maybe not that basic, right?

Have fun with the cake tasting on Saturday!
that sounded good to me

Very well said and polite too... I think everyone needs to be made aware of these kinds of infringements on peoples financial budgets these days. It's not as easy anymore to "just do it"!

I ate plenty of spaghetti and meatloaf. I tried to trick myself by using different kinds of pastas.
