But since Kate and Grace are the same age I think that the only thing that could cause some questions/confusion is the relationship stuff.

It's pretty innocent at first but towards the 3rd book we're talking sex and later a baby.

I really feel that if we don't let the kids have the books they'll find another way to get hold of them - from friends - and that would be awful to sneak them and lie to you, you know?

If you're NOT going to let her read them tell her exactly why. It's a bit too adult in some areas for a 10 year old.
If you DO let her read them why not read them with her so you can discuss it if she has any questions?

Kate does both. She'll read till all hours of the night and she draws but she has NO interest in anything organized like gymnastics or sports! We all have our battles.
She has a few friends whose parents allow stuff earlier than I would do. Books, BRAS! (that I don't think she needs but likes the padded look!), music and such.

Please don't think I am a huge prude, 'cause there are things that she does listen to and watch that I know some of my friends would not approve of.

I guess I just don't want her to grow up so fast that things don't phase her later on and she keeps pushing for "more" sooner. Does this make sense?

Why not take her to Borders or B&N and let her chooose something that looks interesting?
Even the library.
Ink Splot 26: Book Review: My Sister the Vampire #1: Switched!

Thanks Edie! I looked it up and will see what we can find. I'll let Grace look at some of the stuff I googled and we'll go from there. This site did recommend Twilight for the 12 and up group.

Jackie, not having any kids, I'm not really sure I'm the one to comment. IMHO, I don't think they would be appropriate for a 10 year old. I would say mid teens would be a better age.

Good luck Suz!

I remember when you said you had to wait this long for the results it seemed sooo far away! Time has flown by!!

I totally understand. Each parent has their own idea of what is "too old".
I discuss this with another mom here all the time.

I don't want Kate to grow up too fast, either BUT I also don't want her so sheltered that when her classmates talk about something that she is clueless b/c we think it's inappropriate.

I have to say that I don't think too many things are inappropriate. It's all about how mature your kid is at each age and how open you are to talking about things.

I would say that their age now is a bit too young for the books but in the next 2 years they'll start to understand more of that boy/girl thing and it won't be "gross"

Those are them!
Book #2 is hard to find. We found it on Ebay or half.com with another book - that you can have if you want it!!!!
I forget which book it came with but it was another in the set of 5 books.

I say you're perfectly qualified.
You're a girl. You were a little girl once. You've read the books. Nothing says you have to be a mom to have an opinion

Actually, maybe I should have said 13-15 years. Not sure why I said 'mid teens'.

Jackie is she at all interested in Harry Potter? I just love those books.

Or is she looking for something more romantical?

My Grace is not a reader. Of course she can read but she doesn't do it for enjoyment and it makes me sad. She HAS expressed an interest in reading the Twilight books for some reason but I need to know if ya'll think they are appropriate for an almost 10 year old (or at least MY almost 10 year old!). She seems to like scarier kind of stuff and read a few of the Goosebumps books. I just want her to be able to understand what she is reading and I'm not sure if the Twilight stuff would be over her head.

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. I loved!! to read at her age! She is pretty creative though and would sit and draw for hours so maybe that is her outlet.
I don't know if I'm the best one to offer an opinion since I don't have kids, but I think if I had an almost 10 year old, I would not want her to read the Twilight books for another 2 or 3 years. They're mostly harmless, but there is some reference to sex in the 3rd and 4th books and while it was not nearly raunchy enough for my taste I think for someone who's 9 or 10, it's more than they need to be exposed to.

I know that kids are exposed to things earlier and earlier these days, so maybe it's a fruitless effort to try to shield them, but that's just my opinion of what I think I would do.

It makes me crazy when people take forever to pay for ebay auctions that they've won. I still have 3 people that haven't paid me, and one person won 4 auctions! I want my money!!

Whereas on SCS I was very pleasantly surprised that every single person who bought something has already paid! $420 in total as of this morning!

Hello again. I'm pretty much dressed and ready to go, but it's not quite time yet so I thought I'd come lurk for a minute or two.

Thanks for all the well wishes this morning. I sure don't want anything to be "wrong" but I do want definitive answers, KWIM?

As for the Twilight discussion, I'm on the same boat as everyone else. The sexual tension is just a bit much for tweenagers, IMO.

And JackieG - Prude away, Baby! Not enough parents take the time to care/interact/intercede in this day and age IMHO! Not that kids should be overprotected, but I think our kids are exposed to way too much way too soon these days.

I am so lucky to have found all of you!

I was just thinking last night how sweet it was that so many of you jumped to comment when I posted that Gage was crawling. I doubt I'd have any comments if it wasn't for you guys. It's really nice to know that all of you care so much! I wish that I was on there more so that I could keep up with all of you better.

I didn't comment on this earlier, but I just grinned when I read that he was doing the army crawl. I love when babies do this! Before you know it you'll be having trouble keeping up with him! Go Gage!!!!!

I still need to finish my menu for Saturday. That was the one thing I didn't do on Sunday because I got caught up in a selling frenzy!

So far I know I'm making guacamole, and I'm thinking about cheese-stuffed, bacon-wrapped jalapenos. I need some more appetizers though.

For dessert I'm making pineapple coconut cupcakes, salted caramel brownies (I found a new recipe that looks much easier to work with!) and peanut butter cup cheesecake bars.

And I need to figure out some martinis. I know I'm doing pineapple upside cake, but I'm thinking I want to have the stuff for maybe 6 different ones and type up the recipes so people can just help themselves and make a drink when they want.

I'm trying to decide if I want to sell my Nestabilities. I probably should. I don't think I've used them in close to a year.

I was at a furniture store yesterday. I walked up to look at a chest of drawers and Paula Deen started chatting me up! Freaked me out.

I don't know if it was coincidence or if there was some kind of motion sensor. There was a TV on another dresser nearby and up pops Paula just as loud and chatty as can be. Telling me all about her new line of furniture. What doesn't she sell???

Tomorrow I will check the grocery store to see if there's a Paula Deen line of butter.

That all sounds delicious! How about BCD? Do you have a fondue pot? This is lick the bowl good IMO: Creamy Tomato Fondue - Viking Range Corporation

My friend does that with martinis for bunco. I always love going to her house. She sets up a table with all of the martini stuff and recipes. I liked that chocolate martini recipe from Porcha. She also did a Pina Colada martini that I liked.

I'd say that would certainly be a logical thing for her to put her name on!

OMG! That fondue looks sooo good! I don't have a real fondue pot, but I have a thing that plugs in and keeps food warm...I wonder if that would work?? YUM! Even if I can't find a way to keep it warm for the party, I will be making that for myself some time!

Sounds wonderful so far!

Hmmm.... do girls eat onions at showers? My girlfriend used to make a ball of cream cheese on the end of green onions and then roll those in shredded cheddar cheese.

Queso and chips? BCD? Honestly, I'd be happy with some fresh fruit and/or veggies.
