I miss the elementary school days when we would get supply lists early enough to take advantage of the sales. At the high school and middle schools, the various teachers send supply lists home the first couple of days of school, and usually insist you have everything within a day or two. No time usually to bargain hunt. That said, I did pick up a bunch of stuff at Target yesterday that I figured was pretty universal, so hopefully we won't be scrambling too much.

Ouch. Those quickie trips always turn out to be biggies for me too.

Okay, fine. We'll be celebrating by watching infomercials all night in our undies while eating chips. Now do you see why it couldn't be discussed publicly.

I think it was 103. I switched over to the Weather Channel at one point to see our "Local on the 8s," and caught part of the U.S. map they were showing. I am pretty sure it was San Antonio that said 103 (if not S.A., then some other place in south/central Texas) because I thought, "Poor Loribelle; dat's too hot."

CARO!!

I think you jinxed me!

Remember when I was talking about Zappos a couple of days ago and you referred me to 6PM.com?

Well, today on my doorstep there was not only a package from Zappos but also one from 6pm.com! They must share a warehouse and accidentally sent me someone else's order in addition to mine.

I had to open the box to get the packing slip so I could contact them about returning it. I'm kinda hoping they tell me to just keep the item inside.

And on a Monday to boot.

I'm glad that the dentist didn't find anything. Must have been just a little abscess? Who knows why those things just pop up where they do. One time the doctor thought I had one on my BB. Talk about scaring the bejeebers out of someone (me, not the doctor)!

We are having delightfully cool weather here. It's only in the 70s today!

I'm loving it, but for August it's a little strange.

I love homeschooling about this time of year. We go to Walmart in Sept. and stock up on clearanced school supplies.

Mobile is on Mobile Bay, not right on the Gulf. You have to drive about an hour or so south to get to the beach. (If you look at a map, you'll see what I mean.) A lot of people from Mobile would go down to Gulf Shores, AL. I guess I don't know how family friendly it is now. My boyfriend and I went at night one time, had a picnic on the beach, and it was nice. We didn't feel unsafe or anything like that (remember though, that was more than 20 years ago.). During the day, it seemed like your typical tourist/beach area (crowded with a variety of people), with the usual cheesy souvenir shops and sea-themed restaurants. During the off season (after Labor Day) it is less busy and a lot of the shops close.

In and around Mobile, there are a lot of attractions that your family might like. You can tour the USS Alabama battleship and a submarine; there are antebellum homes to tour and the Bellingrath home and gardens. My mom and I enjoyed doing that. The boys would probably find it boring, but I bet they would like the battleship and the submarine.

So yeah, not a bad place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

MissI, thanks for the info.

I'm not wondering which is the "closest" nice beach town to Birmingham. Any takers?

Probably Gulf Shores but there is not a close one.

When are you coming? I forget.

Yeah, Gulf Shores.

It's not "close,", but it's closer to Birmingham than it is to Madison.

After dinner I went out to the garden to see if there were any tomatoes to pick (there were!). After I picked the tomatoes I decided I better give the garden a little drink. While I was doing that, the T&O neighbors came home. They were getting out of their car as I was carrying a bucket of water out to the garden.

I couldn't believe it, but the dad (who can barely walk), practically chased me down to ask me, "Do you know who bought the house the across the street?" I'm like, "No, I don't." (I mean, really, how would I know? I just noticed when I got home from D.C. that there was a "sale pending" sign added to the realtor's sign in the front yard; that was two weeks ago and it still says sale pending.)

Anyway, what he really meant was that HE knew and wanted to tell me. You could tell he just couldn't wait to tell me that "So-and-so's son bought it." I just kind of shrugged my shoulders. He acted all incredulous, "Don't you remember So-and-So that lived across the street? His son bought the house." I just kept walking and said, "Whatever."

You know how gossips get such a thrill out of being the ones to spread a story around.

Ha, ha! THat sounds like describing places in Texas! My parents flew into RI & drove to Massachusetts last week. I told the girls I think you can fit all of New England into the state of Texas & driving state to state is like driving city to city here!

Let's all roll our eyes on the count of 3--1, 2, 3

Do you ever feel like asking them, "I'm so proud of you. Would you like a medal or a chest to pin it on?" That is one of my mom's sayings.

Guess it might be a good thing I don't know my neighbors well! In our old neighborhood some of the ladies were like that. Some things are better left unknown!
