Joanne, that Dr. had one point of view. I read about both procedures. And I can see why you would prefer the LapBand. I wonder if there is a way to find out who in your area (teaching hospitals associated with universities or colleges are the best) does lots of LapBands? Apparently in the end, the weight loss is supposed to be similar, without as many risks.

If you could get in with someone who will be positive and an advocate for you!, you will be better off. I think in addition to needing a second opinion, either way,he was not the right surgeon for you. So this all has been a blessing in disguise. Folks change specialists all the time.

You are a beautiful person, inside and out. Trust me, this will all work out.
Trust and hang in there.

Joanne -
I think anytime undergoing major surgery or a major diagnosis, you must get a second opinion. No question about it. You seemed kind of tentative anyway with Marie's issues, so perhaps now is not the time. Use the summer to eat great, take lots of walks and chart your progress. You can always try again in the fall.

Anyway, you have to wear those compression stockings after each of those surgeries and you don't want to wear them in the summer!!!!

I'd love to get lapband. Not sure that I'm big enough. I'm a big chicken anyway -have never had anesthesia and am terrified of going under.

I am going to see a naturapath. I've heard far too many good stories about people changing to the real thyroid hormone (from pigs) and losing 20 - 30 pounds without doing a thing so I need to investigate it. I've been on thyroid meds for years and I am constantly exhausted. Time for another opinion!

I have considered going to a different surgeon, but my regular doctor (who I trust and like very much) only suggested this guy and one other. The other practices out of Philadelphia and I really don't want to have to go that far for follow-ups once a month. Apparently, the band is only recommended for those who need to lose less weight (60 to 80 lbs). I know my cousin lost more than that. AND her diabetes disappeared. When the surgeon asked me about that, I think he expected me to say her diabetes was still an issue.

Even though I think I've decided against it, I've still been down and dwelling today. Of course, having a headache hasn't helped. I'm exhuasted, too. Stress, I'm sure, but allergies, too. I've been sneezing a LOT.

Jen - I have had my thyroid checked countless times because of my low energy. I did the massive Vitamin D check and take that daily now, but I'm still tired all the time and have zero energy. I dno't know if I should ask to see a thyroid specialist or not. It seems no matter what path I head down, I get "no, you are okay" with things. Of course, not with the weight issues, but with all other health avenues. I keep thinking I'll find SOME answer to be able to make some changes but it doesn't happen!

Joanne...you are on the EAST COAST! Do you realize the wealth of knowledge out there? Harvard, Yale, John Hopkins.....etc!!

If you wish to limit yourself only to your doctor's suggestion that is certainly, ok. Just know, there are other options. I suspect you received crummy "bedside" manner....I would persist if I were you. But that is your choice.

Take some time off, of the entire subject!! for you and the family...for the summer. Enjoy! Perhaps revisit this later. Give it all a rest.....

Wow! I slept for 10 hours last night. The cooler weather and a BIG dinner must have helped. I have been trying to eat around 1200 calories a day for weeks. ever since I started I am tired but can't sleep. Of course, no weight loss either.

Joanne- I agree with the others. Try and concentrate on eating healthier and taking the dogs for a walk each day. Losing weight is a struggle and is so depressing.

Marie- in my area Cub Foods sells real kaiser rolls. However, the deli uses chibatta bread.

I am on a mission to finish my Easter Cards. I have not really felt like card making. I usually make cards all the time.

Hedgie - you did not say too much. I appreciate your words of wisdom. You hit the nail on the head about "bedside manner". I just don't care for that doctor. But I also trust my GP and will only go places she recommends and that is only two doctors

Still have a headache - but I know it is weather this time. Storms are moving in. Some of our neighbors are having a yard sale today and I hope the rain holds off a few more hours.

I so want to stamp today and organzie my craft room but the shelves aren't quite ready. I'm chomping at the bit for that!!! I may be able to move enough things around to make a few cards, but I'm doubtful! If I don't do that, I'm hoping to convince Bill to help me clean out our bedroom. We have too much "stuff" and clutter. I'd like it to be more comfortable and relaxing in there! Wish me luck!!!

Taking a break. I got a lot of cleaning/organizing done. Not finished, but made a HUGE dent. I can walk in my room rather freely now and I can get the vacuum through my half of the room! PROGRESS!!!! Now I'm taking a computer and coffee break.

Okay, since I know you guys really listen to me and care about me, I'm going to share my confusion yet again. I heard from my cousin today. She lost 134 pounds with the lapband. I feel like going back to that surgeon and stuffing that information in his face. I am now feeling spiteful toward him but that is NOT a reason to go through surgery. And I flat out don't like the man! Rant over (for now ) - thanks for listening.

Hello dear beautiful ladies, was to go to my cousin's 65th birthday party but am still feeling sick - whatever this is, it has me drained.

It was nice to have Camron & Conrad for a few hours this morning. We got them a new Verggie Tales DVD on Easter with a separate one with Larry's silly songs.

Have a blessed day.

Caterina - I'm so sorry you are still feeling so drained. It is rainy and gross here, so maybe staying in is a better idea anyway. I know I wouldn't want to go out in this mess.

Bill is putting up the shelves as I type this. I still need to let them completely dry - I won't start putting things on them until Monday, I would expect. lt looks great. I will try to get a picture. It is just such a small room I don't know if I can back up far enough!!! I might have to take a picture from the front yard looking in the window - we'll see.

Got a lot done in the bedroom, too!! YAY!!! Even Bill went through a lot of his stuff. There is plenty more, but it looks so much better than it did. We need a trip up to the attic to put some things away and to find a bin of curtains. We also have a few things to go to Good Will. I would like to change the sheets before tonight as well but that might not happen.

Hopefully Ed will clean out "his" side of the garage. I gently remind him that on the 21st and 22nd there will be pick-ups from Goodwill.

I got most of the "stuff" out of my room. Not much is actually leaving the house, but it is in it's place now. I fixed four pairs of Bill's pants - three buttons missing and I needed to sew part of a seam that had come undone. Those pants have been there for months to be fixed. I ironed, did three loads of laundry. I still have things to put in the attic, but I feel like I've been productive. Certainly moreso than I have been lately!

And it is STILL raining. I know people will be flooded since this has been coming down steadily since before noon.

I have been lazy today. Just laundry and a few light chores. Just tired from the week. And it is 34 degrees and raining. At one point it was snowing. I just knew I needed a lazy day.

Joanne you have done a lot! Wow!

Yep - my heat is on. But it was just too cold and damp - not raining yet, but it will be soon. Perfect for sitting at a soccer game tomorrow!

Yea, our fields are a mess from all the snow!! But, it'll be fun. I like soccer way more than baseball.

Soccer: fast moving, exciting games last one hour, but they play in the rain
Baseball: slow as dirt, games last three hours, no rain play but they do play in drizzle

Happy Windy Saturday! It was supposed to be NOT windy today, but the weatherman flubbed that one!

We went to Amarillo to run a couple of errands and ended up being gone 4 hrs! Man I'm tired. My son and his buddies all wanted these Oakley Sunglasses for prom. They all want to be the same!!! Any way didn't find them, but did order them online, but did get several other things done that needed to be done! But the wind just wore me out!

My mom is doing really well. She asked me for some thank you cards and I delivered thosetoday. She looks better today, her pain is much better! In 6 weeks she will start her chemo, looks like 5 or so rounds! Not too bad!

Camie - Congrats on the great dinner and kindle! Sounds like you had a great night!

Liz - that just stinks they blocked you from work! We should have a yenta chant

Jennifer - I hope y';all have a great weekend!

Joanne - don't let that dr discourage you, if you want to do this, find a surgeon that you like and that will work with you!

Have a great Saturday Night!

Sherry

I'm pooped! Got the rest of the stuff in the attic, changed the sheets (although I really need to wash the comforter), showered and am done for the night. I've got my jammies on, will visit various sites online and then might do a little cross stitch. I'm just tuckered out! But I feel good getting all that done today.

Tomorrow, I hope to arrange a little bit of stuff in the craft room. I don't want to put things on the shelves just yet - want them to be thoroughly dry and not at all tacky. But if I can rearrange some things, I might have room to stamp. As I organize, I'll be sorting stamps, too. I'll probably have quite a few I'll want to get rid of. I'll make sure I post here first.

After all my crying and ranting and such, I think my plan for now is to go back to my GP and tell her I was not happy with the experience with that particular doctor. I just don't want to go all the way into Philadelphia for this procedure. Mostly because of the follow-ups. I will need to see the doctor every 4-6 weeks. I don't want to have to go all that way just for that. Plus, I hate cities!

Devil's Advocate:
I've heard with these procedures that you need a highly experienced doctor. Which I would assume would be in Philly. Perhaps there is a reason you are being pushed to Philly?!

I get that Joanne.
When I was trying to find an endocrinologist (there aren't many in NH - most of them are diabetes only) I called one and the secretary was the meanest woman ever. She told me over the phone, not even being a doctor (!) that I didn't have a thyroid problem, that I had a weight/eating problem!!!!! I was in tears. God was pushing me towards a doctor that would believe me. His office looks like it hasn't been changed from the 1970's and there are papers everywhere, but he took one look at my bloodwork and said that I needed to be seen that I have a definite problem. He, himself, has thyroid disease so he gets it. And it's a good thing I did...because as he said to me, "Wow, I thought you were going to be a light hormone case, but it turns out you need quite a bit." Can you imagine if I had listened to that first woman???? I am on 125 mcg of replacement thyroid a day - that's no small change for someone who still has her thyroid! (Thus why I possibly may switch to pig hormone - we'll see.)

Ham, kielbasa (from the new Polish deli in town), sweet potatoes, pierogies, mashed potatoes, carrots, rye bread, I think that's about it.

What time will you be here?

Jen/Joanne,
You are so right. Only you know the situation. Keep being an advocate for yourself. It takes perserverence sometimes. But you will find the right person, the right answer, etc....It may take some searching but will be worth it in the end.

I am still trying to find a gyno doc that doesn't tell me it is my weight that causes every issue. I have tried all the ones my health plan allows. I keep praying that a GOOD one comes to my area. Remember I do not drive, so being on a public transit line is also important.
DH just left for work. I am hoping my ds feels better today and will take me to church. It is Palm Sunday. I would usually walk the 2 miles. However, it is windy and only 32 degrees. So the wind chill is in the teens.
