Mustache Die question

Does the clear plastic backing with the little plus signs serve a specific purpose?

Actually, the center of the die is at the center of the plus signs. In the middle of the plus signs is a hole.

You can actually line up the holes on two dies, run them through at the same time and you will make a frame.

Does that make sense?
