Happy New Year, everyone!

Happy belated Birthday, Imke!!

Last night we went to a friends house and spent time with them and their two boys. Their youngest is six weeks younger than Claire and their oldest will be 3 in February. Claire LOVED to check out their toys. She was in toy heaven, especially when their two went to bed and she lost her competition for her favorite ones. Already have some ideas for her 1st birthday, based on what she was playing with last night.

New Year's sure does change when you have kids, but I wouldn't have it any other way!!

She's also walking around quite a bit more (on furniture and with her walker toy). She's getting very steady. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she's walking before February.

I am sure Donelda's Christmas card is still circling the planet as I forgot to put extra postage on it! DUH! I had a stack of cards with a rubber-band and tossed it in the box!

5 degrees here today--warming up to 20s...by Wednesday of next week they are saying 50 degrees? Tell me that isn't bezzerk for Boston weather in January? (Of course Shane and Muddy are fast asleep still!) Patrick is back to school today-Kala stayed at her friend Molly's house last night--so all things are very quiet here this morning.

What's new with everyone?

Good morning.

Last night the helicopter from work crashed in a field about 300 yards from my brother's place; they were en route to pick up a patient. All aboard (3) were killed, but they are just releasing the names of 2 at this point. I know the nurse; she is mother to 2 or 3 children. I just got off the phone with my brother; I called to get the details. Last night my Mom called around 9 p.m. to tell us Wade had called her to tell her there was a crash. He told me today that he fell asleep in the chair while watching t.v. and woke up when he heard an explosion and saw the sky go red. He got up and went and looked to the north and east, saw nothing, thought he had been dreaming, and went and sat back down. His friend, who lives a few miles away, then called and told him he was walking past his window and saw the sky turn red and to go check it out...something must have happened. It turns out the accident was south and west of his house; he was second on the scene; there was a man who got there just before him and was calling for help. It sounds like they knew they were in trouble and had radioed for help because police and rescue vehicles started arriving shortly after he got there. He said it looked like daylight because of all the fires reflecting off the snow; the only way he knew it was a helicopter was because he saw one of the blades. He found 2 of the victims...they were both gone. He left when help arrived so he wouldn't be in the way. When he got home there were people in his yard watching. He said they evacuated the crash site by around midnight, except for 2 police who stayed there all night. He got a call at 1 a.m., from a reporter from Minnesota, asking for an interview; he declined, but they showed up at his house about 10 minutes later. He didn't answer the door and the reported called back about 1/2 hour later and asked for a phone interview, which he also declined. He said the traffic by his acreage today is unbelievable. I am just so sad about this shocking news....

Awe Angela--so sorry for the news...I am impressed that Wade jumped up to help-I cannot imagine knowing what to do in a situation like that...Amazes me that the news people can be so IN YOUR FACE when it comes to something like this...I am sure your brother will be bothered on and on--investigation people...insurance...Were any of his animals on the farm in danger?

Oh my, Angela. This is so sad for the families and for your workplace. I cannot imagine being that close to a crash site as you brother was. Proud of your brother for not giving the interviews.

Angela, that is so sad. I am also proud of your brother. These news people are inhuman most of the time. I am sure the three people who died families appreciate him keeping quiet as I am sure they don;t want to hear about how they looked etc. He is a good man.

So sad Angela. That was great of your brother to respond and try to help. Ugh, those reporters are relentless and some have no morals or compassion.

Angela how sad and tragic I'll will be praying for those families and your brother. He will never forget what he saw. I'm glad your brother didn't meet with the reporters. They never get the story correct believe me we just went through that with Ryan's accident. What's sad it people tend to believe what they read.

I wondered a bit about that. I found a couple articles after I heard about your grandson. Both had a somewhat different account of what happened.

I have to share a Claire story.

Vickie, I think it was you who bought me the shaped animal books for my Virtual Baby Shower back in February. I also know a few of you have sent me books with my kits...anyway, Claire and I read pretty much every night as part of our bedtime routine. Tonight, before bed, she's playing with her toys and she comes across the tiger book Vickie got...she plays with the pages for awhile and then she picks it up and puts it in front of her face and says "Doh, doh, doh, doh"....sets it down, turns the page, picks it up agai..."Doh, doh, doh, doh".

I was so impressed that my little girl is reading to herself!!

(Okay, so what if the book was upside down!)

Angela- That are terrible news. Some reporters have no decency and also a penchant for truth. I think they thought: It must always be spectacular, who is interested in the truth ? Horrible. I hope your brother will get the pictures of the accident quickly get out of his head. Recognition for his courage.

Heather- Something she means with "Doh, Doh, Doh". Now you only have to come out what she means ! Is not it great to discover something new every day on her ?

Heather, Claire's "reading" sounds so cute!

I need to call and check in with my brother today; Lena you are right, it's likely he will never forget what he saw. I'm glad, too, that he didn't grant the interviews; a lot of farmfolk are like that...they want to help people out, but keep things under their hat. This is a bad time; 14 years ago the girl that he had been dating was brutally murdered. I didn't know her well, but she had spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with our family. She was also a friend of my sisters. My brother is not much of a talker, so you don't always know what he is thinking or if something is bothering him.

That is too sweet Heather, and funny to. Sounds like Claire loves books which is great. There are so many great ones out there for kids of all ages.

Angela, sounds like your brother has had his share of tragedy in his life. So sorry he had to be the one who found the plane crash and victims. He sounds like a great guy.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Heather--cute Claire story!

I know I promised a recipe-not sure if it was this one (made this this week)...goes well with any type of food for a side dish! Yummy and filling! (Easy too-made it once with the diced potatoes--we liked it better with the shreds--more cooked through)

Awe Angela--your poor brother! Has the news settled down a bit around him? It's not like he can 'get away' for a few days owning a farm! He should get his own red tape and surround his house and barns that say's "no access"!

Not much going on here--wicked cold yesterday--Tom started showing some cold symptoms last night and hit the hay early. I got up at the crack of dawn this morning and noticed we didn't put our garbage out--here I was schlepping cans down to the road --but no garbage men today--day behind schedule! {Oddly enough-when you call them they say they are coming regardless of the 2 holidays...guess they'll be here tomorrow instead!}

Have a good weekend everyone!

Angela - So sorry to hear what your brother is going through. Good for him for not giving interviews. I am so surprised how people love to dwell on the negative.

I taught a class today at our LSS. My poor blog is deglected because I feel like I am always getting ready for a class.

Thanks for the recipe Susanne. I am going to a card class tomorrow where we will make 8 cards in 3 hours. I am just exhausted afterwards. Then I need to come home and make a baby quilt, diaper cake and baby shower favors for next weekend. Does anyone have any good ideas for baby shower favors?

Then she made...: Lovely little find

Tracie--go see the above item--they are made from Mento gum containers--(keep gum inside) remove label...you will need (blue/pink/yellow) baby socks cut off the toe off and tie it up so it looks like a stocking cap! So your baby favors would look like lil' white snowbabies! I saw this a long time ago and thought it was cute--it also covers the inside treat (Mento gum) is yummy! Go see--I'd love to drag a photo in here but SCS always disses it from Google!

Another idea (which might be too time consuming) is a bead + safety-pin bracelet--I am sure you have seen those before...Mini baby bottles with a $1 lottery card inside for each guest

Baby food jars + homemade candles "baby powder scent"...

Q-tips as the base of a Topiary with pink/blue daisy on top...

Clay pot that is painted, seeded-ready for the window sill with some herbs or baby flowers...

In reverse: Have baby shower guests bring; a charm, 2-3 Mothering Tips like; baby food recipes, their favorite soothing antidotes for baby and new mom, wives tales about mothering, poems, songs, etc (all typed up and ready to tape into a blank nice journal for Mom to keep...How they are related to mom/new baby, their favorite baby names, Like a mom to be Smash Book!

Practical favor: A nice calendar--January shower--everyone needs at least (2) useful calendars...

M&M site (Mars candy) will do personalized M&Ms for your shower...or candy bars--with the baby's name printed on them...I think there are many other sites that do this as well...

TMI or helpful? I get off on a tangent--love doing stuff like this aka brainstorming! It all depends on how many guests and how much time you have to make em!

Susanne - Why didn't I think to ask you weeks ago. All great ideas. Now I just need to see which one I can get done. Thank you so much.

Tracie, here's a link to an idea that would be easy to re-create; Michaels has the small tins you can purchase in quantity; or use your die cutting to make a pillow box and put mints or goodies in it.

"Simply Sweet" Round, Personalized Candy Tin (set of 12)

Wish I lived closer; I love doing things like that!

Actually, that site has a lot of cute, easy ideas. I like the about to pop idea using a small popcorn box (I know Hobby Lobby has the small boxes). I'm like Susanne, get me started on a quest, and I can't stop! LOL

And, I was just on the Party City website (you may have a store near you) that has lots of ideas/supplies for favors very reasonably priced.
