I'm not 100% sure since I've never been to one, but I sort of get the idea. Basically each person designs a card and you need to make a sample card that everyone can follow. All the supplies needed to make that card need to be cut and ready with directions for everyone (and placed in your shoebox). Then everyone would go around the room to different tables and make everyone's cards. You would need to have enough supplies in your shoebox for everyone to make 1 card and generally the cards need to be easy enough to be completed in about 15 minutes.
Sometimes there are name tag contests, usually there is a lunch, and some even have 'for sale tables' where you can bring your items to sell or trade with each other. I think the hostess gets +2 of your swap cards that you design- I think.
So if 15 people are coming, I bring enough for the other 14 to make the card I design and bring? Sounds like fun.

Yep, you go it! And sometimes for lunch, everyone chips in like $5 (or $3 or whatever) or sometimes everyone brings a dish to share. I think it would be easier to chip in a few dollars and order lunch.
Oh, and I forgot- sometimes there is a fee and I think that is to cover the rental fee for the room where you would be meeting like a church hall, craft store crafting room....etc.
You know, if we get enough people together we could have one ....
OK - now I'm totally jealous! Patty knows what a cool chick I think she is and I would love to go to a shoebox swap. Plus I would like to see Patty's pool, her puppy and meet her son who likes peas just like me

I agree with you about chipping in for lunch. It would be kind of hard for some (like me) who will be traveling a little distance to bring a dish. If this comes together in real life, count me in!

You are so sweet! You're more than welcome to hop on a plane and come visit me! I'd love to have you here, except you wouldn't want this heat!

I talked to my husband last night about having something here at my house and if I could invite a few people over. The only thing would be my kids. I have a small house and he would have to take the kids somewhere for a couple hours.
As soon as I'm back on my computer I'll add you both to list. I'm on my phone right now. Actually I'm sitting here waiting for the repairman to come back he left like two hours ago to fix a part and he hasn't been back since.

Do you have a church? Maybe you could borrow a basement? Our church has a family life center and they let us use it if we plan ahead to make sure no one else has it booked....
I have found when going to someone's home it is more fun when it is cozy... let your hubby and the kids pile up in the bedroom with a movie and say hi to all your guests... they will love it!! Have fun with it... sounds like it will be fun... to bad I live all the way in TN!
P>S> What is a shoebox swap anyway?

Yes, I do have a church and I thought about using their room, but it's a big hall and it's $100 rental which then I would have to pass on to everyone attending. If I host in my home then it's free
I'm going to talk to my husband again. I have a bi-level home and I do my crafting downstairs, if hubby keeps the kids upstairs then we might be okay.

You're still invited... you can hop on the plane with Lorraine! Seriously though it would be so neat to get together with you all. Since I quit my job 7 1/2 years ago I rarley go out or do anything. Hubby thinks I have it so good because I stay home with the kids and I love being a stay at home mom, but I miss getting out, having adult time, working, and having my own money.
A shoebox swap is a get together where you bring a card that you design and you bring enough supplies for everyone attending to make your card. Then you go around and make everyone else's card that they brought. You can put your items in a shoebox....hence the name 'shoebox' swap.
I stopped by Michaels and got a set of nestabilities Classic Squares. I'm looking for storage for my prismacolor pencils. What I want is to be able to have them separated according to color families, possibly in a container that they can stand up. So far, the closest I've come is a fishing tackle box that had eight dividers. They would be laying down, and that's okay, but this wasn't quite what I wanted so I'm still looking. If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated....and a link to a picture if you can.

Hmmm...the only thing I can think of is something like this-
I like that idea, Patty! I never thought to check at Office Max, but not sure if I have one near me. I may go to Staples and look. Thanks for the idea...

Every year I say I am not going to watch BB and every year I usually tune in to watch some! I watched the first episode this year so I will probably watch more. I had no idea who Dan was so I must not have watched that season much. Or Britney. I remember Boogie and Janelle. I was interested to see the twists for the year. Pretty good.

I know some of the ladies here are getting them at Target. I love Target, it's my favorite store!
Kathi- I looked on your blog (I left some comments for you too), but I couldn't find your curtains. Can you point me in the right direction? I'd love to see them.
Popping in to say hello. It was my SU card class day. We made ten cards and had a lot of fun.
Sounds like so much fun! Wish I could start up my classes again. It's just so hard with the hours hubby works and the fact that my kiddos are still little. It was nice making a little extra money too...it helped me make my minimums.
So did you get to use any of the new Holiday stamps?
