COMPLETED - THANK YOU! Cards for OPERATION WRITE HOME (Soldiers), 4+1, Due March 15
Welcome to My First Swap!
I spoke with Heather (QuillingQueen) and she's o.k. with two swaps for the soldiers going on at once!
Cards for OPERATION WRITE HOME (OWH)
Operation Write Home is an organization that collections homemade cards and sends them to soldiers overseas for the soldiers to send to their loved ones. Please be sure to see their guidelines for cards below.
We'll be making Full Cards, 4.25" x 5.5", 4+1, the plus one going to Operation Write Home You don't have to specify your theme, but please stick to general themes: Thinking of You, Missing You, Birthday, Thank You, Love, or blank. Please, NO Holidays.
Quantity : 4 +1, You won't be getting one of your own back, so please make an extra card to keep.
NVR, but please read through OWR's guidelines below.
No Recipes required, but please include a post-it with Swapper's Real Name and SCS Name with your card in case someone has questions about your technique.
OWH GUIDELINES (Please read and follow! You can read more Here at Operation Write Home or feel free to ask questions.)
1. NO GLITTER that can rub off! Glitter also is dangerous for our heroes, making them visible to night vision goggles. Stickles or pens that apply glitter are o.k., according to OWH.
2. Please leave the back of the card plain for me to stamp "Operation Write Home".
3. Line cards that have been made with dark card stock with a lighter color inside so soldiers have a place to write their messages home.
4. Use Quality Supplies - Remember that some of our heroes may be using sand as their writing table and thin paper will be hard to write on in these circumstances. Please use quality card stock for bases such as SU, PTI, GKD.
5. Do Not Use Foamies, Itty bitty stickers or glue sticks to put your card together. These don't hold up to the rigors of the battlefront.
6. Some Dimension is O.K. - and appreciated! But don't go wild. No big vintage buttons or deep 3-D embellishments to make sure the cards the soldiers send go through the postal service.
7. Please remember these cards are being sent by Soldiers so no cards that say "Wish You Were Here" or with sentiments to "mommy" or "daddy". They ask that we stick to the general themes that I've mentioned above.
8. No Hand Written Sentiments - Military wives have shared with OWH that they've gotten upset when opening a card and seeing another woman's writing inside. Let's not give them any reason to wonder.
Deadlines:
Sign-up date: Feb. 15th
Due IN MY Hands: March 15th. I understand that life sometimes gets in the way of our swaps, if you have to drop out, please send me a pm as early as possible. Any cards received after the 15th may be returned to sender.
Return Date: I'll mail back cards within 10 days of March 15th
Mailing instructions:
Packaging:
Place swap items in a large baggie for waterproof purposes. Write your real name, SCS name and swap name on a piece of paper and include in the baggie for identification purposes.
Swap Return:
First Class: Place baggie inside a self-addressed stamped envelope for return mail purposes. The amount of postage on your SASE should be the same amount that it takes to mail to the swap hostess. To insure that enough postage will cover the returned swap items, include additional postage which will be returned if not used.
Priority: Inside your baggie, include a self-addressed priority label and one priority stamp. I'll provide the priority envelope.
NO METERED POSTAGE!
I'll PM my address to all swappers at a later date.
Please feel free to sign up for more than one spot! Special prizes for anyone taking more than one spot or who donates their cards to OWH!
Thanks! Tracy (Proud Mom of a Veteran of the war in Iraq)

Thanks so much for being my first sign-up! I don't plan to cancel, even if it's just you and I, I have a bunch of cards to send to OWH already, and we can add ours and I'll send them on their way! Could you please pm me with your address sometime, I have a little Thank You I'd like to send to you for donating your cards.
Glad to hear that you won't cancel, but don't give up. There's plenty of time for more swappers to join. The threads tend to slow down this time of year since everyone has so much else going on, so it's good that the due date isn't until March.

Monica, Heather and Susan,
Thank You!! Thank you for signing up and for donating. It's so important to support our soldiers (and their families!)
My son is in the PA Army National Guard, but at times he seems to put in almost as much time as an active duty soldier. He was training and then in Iraq for a year, spent almost 9 months preparing to go first to Qatar and then Kuwait, only to have both deployments cancelled at the last minute. He's also been mobilized for state emergencies three times, most recently spending 3 weeks in NYC following Hurricane Sandy. We're so proud of what he's done with his life but also know that there are many soldiers who don't have families standing behind them.
I adopted a soldier through Soldier's Angels who was serving in Afghanistan. She's been there for over a year when my first package arrived. It happened to get there faster than my first letter, and she was so surprised that a package had been sent to her that she actually called security to open it! What a shame!
So thank you and Lois for helping to do something to support our men and women still serving overseas,
Tracy

Carolyn and Martha,
I've got you down, thank you both for joining me!
Kristen,
I understand about the overextending concern! I have two laundry baskets full of sewing projects that are supposed to be done for Christmas, and what did I do tonight? I was up in my craft room making birthday cards for a swap I joined! I love sewing for my grandchildren, but sometimes making cards is just so much more fun. We'll keep a spot for you just in case you find time.

I've got you Kari, and thanks so much for signing up and donating all of your cards! There are going to be a lot of happy soldiers at the end of this swap!
Question: If I want to donate ALL my cards, do they have to be all the same design? I have a lot of cards that I've had as samples for classes I've had, I don't need all these and would like to donate them. Will that be OK?

If you're donating, your cards do not need to be all the same. They just have to adhere to the guidelines of Operation Write Home. You're also welcome to send more than 6 or 12, if you signed up for 2 spots.

Welcome, Marie.
Your brother will be in my prayers for a safe return. I know it's not easy having someone in a war zone. My best to you and your family. Is this his first deployment?
My son has a pending deployment to Afghanistan next year. They won't know more til early next year. Now that he has a wife and two young children, he's really hoping it won't happen, but if it does, he'll go. He's in the PA Army National Guard.
Thank you for joining, let us know if you need support during your brother's deployment, we're here for you,
Tracy
Please sign me up for this project! I am a veteran of The Navy. My husband is a veteran of The Coast Guard and my father was a veteran of The Marine Corps.
I am all about supporting our troops!!

Sandra-
Yes, you can put your name and if you have the OWH stamp, feel free to stamp that as well. It will be a few less cards for me to stamp it on! Thanks.
Sorry if it's taking a little longer to get to your questions and sign-ups. I've taken on WAY to much Christmas sewing for my family (5 pj bottoms, 1 little boy's pj's, a bunting sack for my 6mo grand daughter, overalls for my grand daughter, and new curtains for the kitchen!). So most of my time is being spent chained to my sewing machine. I will get back to you within 72 hours, though, I promise!
Tracy, I have the OWH stamp also, so I will use it to stamp the backs of my cards. That will save you a little time. Of course, it doesn't help right now. Good luck with all that sewing! I'm sure it will be very much appreciated.

Don't worry about getting back to me/us quickly. I think we are all very busy doing many things this month!! I'm not even having a Christmas celebration at my house and things seem to be overwhelming! I'm working on lots of cards for the troops.....yours for OWH and mine for AnySoldier.com
It's hard for me to remember to keep ahead of the holidays (Valentines in Feb then St. Patty in March then Easter....etc)!

Tomorrow is my big day to run around. My son has had my car since early October, pretty much, when he received a promotion at work and his hours changed enough to put him out of the car pools he'd been using. I "borrowed" my car back last Thurs., and noticed a strange whining when I pushed on the gas. My husband did some work to try and prolong the life of the transmission Sat., but sadly, we got to the patient to late. So, my DH and I will be sharing a car for a while longer. I have to drop him off tomorrow on my way to the eye doctor in the morning. He has to go in early, otherwise he's catch a ride with someone else who lives in town.
From the eye doctor, I have to go have a nerve conduction study on my hands and arms, then hit the post office, the bank, KMart, Target, JoAnn fabrics and the grocery store. Just a nice, quiet day in my life! I shouldn't complain...I was suffering from fibrofog today (a symptom of fibromyalgia where your head just won't completely clear) and ended up staying in bed (or the recliner) a good part of the day. I just could not wake up. That better not happen tomorrow! So, I'd better head to bed.
Good Grief!! I've been following along and posting comments of this thread. I just checked the first post of yours and noticed I hadn't even signed up for any spots!!!

No problem, Sandra! I've got you down for a spot. Did you want to swap, if there ends up being anyone to swap with, or do you want to donate your cards?
I've got you down for two spots, Valerie! Thanks so much for donating.
Everyone who's donating, which is everyone so far, please send me a pm with your address. I've been working on small tokens of my appreciation and would really like to send them to you.
I just picked up my flat rate boxes for AP and APO addresses today. A very good friend of my oldest son is in Kuwait for about a year and I want to get a box out to him. Too late for Christmas, but at least he'll get it not too long after. I know when he was in Egypt several years ago, his family never sent him anything, so we try to pick up some of the slack.
THANK YOU, everyone who has signed up so far! Have a wonderful Christmas if you celebrate,
Tracy
