Paola--I used to do that before I got a home scale--but I know you need to do that for every envie that comes to the US.

does the usps website give you accurate postate rates. It rarely works well for me. For instance, when I swapped the forest - it told me the packages to Canada (I weighed them) would be about $2.50... so I kept $2 and returned the rest of their $$$ to them - didn't want to deal with change. Then when I got to the PO to mail them... every one of them cost at least $3.50. I have the same problem with domestic packages, but it's not usually as big of a difference.

We thought maybe our scale was off - so we took it to the PO some time ago.. and nope. it's accurate.

I do not weigh the swaps at home that go out of the US--I usually only have 3 or 4, so I do take those to the PO along with my roll of packing tape and seal those up after the postal lady weighs them and adds the customs form.

I hope my scale is correct for the swaps I do weigh at home--if it is close to the next ounce--like .8 or .9, then I will go up to the next ounce for calculating postage as I also need to still tape the envie. I found a chart on the USPS site that I printed out with the amount of postage to mail a first class parcel--which is what my PO calls swaps since they are not flat. I then added a column with the total amount of stamps--like how much 3 forever stamps equals and so on. Then, I can see quickly what the postage on most envies and then see what the postage should be. It amazes how many people have way too much postage on their return--like sometimes up to $1 too much.

I will take my scale to the post office next time to check as I was curious as to why Terry had to pay so much more on my return envie--I weighed it on my scale and it was one full ounce less than what the post office she took it to weighed it as. So--I am going to double check.

This is sure a long answer for your question......................

That is interesting! I am curious to know what the outcome is......could my PO be ripping me off?? That's entirely possible, seeing as they aren't doing so well.

Thanks for the reply, Barb... very thorough.

I actually calculate the packages on the usps website... I didn't print out a chart. I used to do EACH package - both domestic and international... but as you know, my new PO is a bit quirky... they prefer to send the packages postage due so they can take all day to process them rather than doing it while I stand there and wait. That works for me.

WOW Kelly! Your cards made it to Florida already!! That was fast Thank you for letting me know they arrived!

Funny about the postage....the guy at the PO was making sure that he cancelled all of the stamps....he may have been getting iritated toward the end and just didn't do it!

Glad you liked the cards and the post-its....perfect for this swap for sure!!

Hi Ms Forest!

I use an at home digital scale. I go by the chart on the USPS site for first class mail (I am sure the same as Barb explained). It is broken down by ounce. I have never taken my scale to the PO. I have never had anything returned postage due, or not sent.

Our PO is so very busy that it is a 15 to 20 minute wait every time you go there. They allow packages 13 ounces or less to be dropped in the outside drive thru boxes. I just put them in there and have had no problem {sans, my one lost swap in these past few years}.

I too use the online calculator to determine postage for larger packages, but found that it is not needed for the first class rates, as long as you go by their dimension guidelines you can use your weight scale and skip the hassle.

I used to just over-post as it was cheaper than my time waiting in line, then moved to this system. The rates are what the rates are. If anyone is getting charged more, then I think they are considering it is due to the dimension or thickness and bumping it up to the more expensive package rate.

I think if you take your scale to your PO and compare it, then you should be good to go on the 'at home' method. Every scale is different and our PO has many, so I go by my scale. It sounds to me like your PO is opposite of mine....a bit too much time on their hands! LOL Making it postage due is an easier way for them.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone!!

Oh boy!! I hope I have the cards for this swap waiting for me when my mail resumes on Monday!!

And as far as postage - I take my swaps to the Post Office near my house, and let them weigh the package. I put the same postage on the return envelope. Haven't had problems with it yet.

I stand corrected!! He indeed made sure it was cancelled, lol! After seeing your post, I went back and looked and saw it was the other swap that arrived today Which was even better since that one had $3.30 in postage on it as compared to the $1.80 - woot, woot!

Woo Hoo!!! My cards came! My cards came! THANK YOU for the being the hostess with the mostest, Terry!!! What a gorgeous card you made - and you made one for every one of us. I am in awe!!!

I also received Darlene's beautiful shimmeryy card, Heathers beautiful card with the unique fold, and Kadie's beautiful card with stitching on it! I'm soooooooo excited!!!

I hope I didn't get kicked out of the group - I didn't get any images. (tee hee!!! Just kidding, Terry!) I guess that means the NEXT hostess needs to think about starting a new thread, doesn't she? EEK!!!

I got awesome cards yesterday from Jody, Lela, Diane and a bonus card from Terry! I can't believe you made all of us a card, Terry. Yikes. But I'm glad you did cause I love it! Thanks everyone!! This was a great round.

Good Morning--Happy Friday! It is another rainy morning--after the drought all summer, it seems strange to have so much rain in the past week--It think more than 4 inches.

We made some cute snowy cards at stamp camp yesterday morning--4 fun cards and we made three of each set. I also worked on a Christmas Card swap in the afternoon and hope to finish them today.

I hope you have a good start to the weekend!

Terry--I took two packages of cards to my post office today to check the weight from what my scale at home showed. One was off of .3 ounces and the was .2--both low on my scale. So, I will know to be sure to add that amount each time I weigh a swap package. I am not sure though how your post office came up a full ounce more than I did..........................
