Regina is in Rehab. She is in quite a bit of pain as you can imagine. She is still running a fever. She goes to see her surgeon on Friday and then to the infection doctor on Monday so I will give updates then. I must say it is very tough seeing what they are going through at such a young age. I live in Colorado and they live in NC so I don't see them much. I think it is really taking a toll on my brother. He works long hours all day and then takes her a meal each night and stays with her a few hours. The drive is about 25 minutes each way so he says that the drive is even tough when you are so tired all the time. Oh...the tornado that went through NC last week that made national news....well, it went directly behind the rehab center and did no damage to it but devastated the areas in it's path. They were real lucky! Thanks for the cards. I try to update when I have any new news. Hopefully early next week I will have better news.

UPDATE - Jan 26 - Regina went to 2 of her doctors. The infection is still very bad and the blood count has not improved too much. She will continue to get antibiotics 3 ways for the next month and then they will check the blood counts again for improvement. If it is not better, they will have to do surgery to clean out the infection. MRSA is very hard to kill. They said to expect a miinimum of 3-6 months to get rid of it before they can do surgery again to replace the hip. They took out half of the 92 staples. The rest stay in around the wound area until it heals a little better. Her spirits are better this week. My brother told her that they would have to build a new home for her special needs and she has that to look forward to. She says she is fighting this - which is a BIG change from several weeks ago when she wanted to die. So, things are looking up for her. She will never be able to walk freely again but she has accepted that. She LOVES all the GORGEOUS cards and my brother said he got one and loved his! They have the cards on a HUGE bulletin board and also on the wall. They are truly appreciated!!!

Your updates are so appreciated. I continue to lift John and Regina up in my prayers. I plan on sending another card this week. It's wonderful to hear that her spirits are somewhat lifted!

Feb 22 Update...Regina got test results back today and her blood count has improved which means the infection could be getting better. They still think it's at least 6 more weeks before she can have another hip replacement surgery. She goes to the orthopedic doctor next week so I will update when I get news. Until then...thanks so much for making her days a little sunnier. She surely is enjoying all the beautiful cards!

Thank you for keeping us informed about Regina's progress .... it's a privilege to keep Regina and John in my prayers and to send encouraging cards to help brighten her day. I pray that the Lord will shower them with strength and encouragement to meet each day's difficulties.

March 1 UPDATE: Good news! Regina is finally at home now. She has a full-time CNA to help her during the day as she is still bed-ridden. She had all of her staples removed, finally. They can not put the hip replacement in until all of the MRSA infection is gone. The blood counts were a little better so there is hope. It will be a minimum of 8 weeks before she will have surgery again. Thanks for the prayers and beautiful cards. She loves them!

UPDATE APRIL 3....Regina went to the orthopedic doctor this past week. They have decided to wait until May to see how her blood counts are then, before doing another hip replacement surgery. The MRSA infection needs to be gone before putting metal back into her body or the infection will attack the metal and have to be removed again. They are hoping that she will have the surgery in May so she can move forward but time will tell. Thanks for all the cards and prayers! She loves them!

UPDATE - May 1
Regina went to the drs today. Her blood counts are a tiny bit better but not good enough to do surgery. They think there could still be infection in there and they can't afford to open her up again and take a chance of not being able to do the surgery again. Her body has been through 8 or 9 surgeries in the same area so it is in very very bad shape. She is finally all closed up but my brother says her whole leg looks so bad. She is very depressed and cries all the time. Who wouldn't after all she has been through. They don't know how long it will be before putting her hip back in but probably a few more months. There is also a chance they may have to amputate it. So, i'm sure she would still enjoy cards since she never gets out of the house and is pretty depresses. Thanks so much for everything!

There is a card challenge on SCS this week under Tuesday Teapot Challenge - home page under weekly challenges. If you would like to particiapate...head on over and get deets on it! I think everyone can do this one as it involves flowers and butterflies and white puppies! She is very very depressed so could use a lift! Thanks so much ladies!!!

Regina is supposed to have surgery on the 31st. Her regular doctor did an aspiration of the surgical area and still found MRSA infection there (after about 8 or 9 months). So, it will be up to the surgeon (another doctor) as to whether he will operate again. My guess is that it won't happen but don't know at this point. But, they have put her on antibiotics again (her body has grown immune to them, but they have to try something). I think she goes back on the 30th so we'll see what happens. My brother is SO anxious to get this last surgery done. It has been a horrible journey.
Thanks to everyone for all the cards! She loves them!

UPDATE AUG 1...Regina had surgery again yesterday. IT went very well. They took off some of the mangled nasty skin that had been sewn up 8 times so her leg is looking much better. She will need another surgery when the muscles around the joint build up strength and stretch out causing the hip to pop out. At that time they will lengthen the metal rod they had put in her leg earlier and do knee replacement and then bolt the hip together so it wont pop anymore. Her spirits are high and she has big hopes for walking again. Her surgeon sent her a rose today and that meant the world to her. She has been through so much! She will be in the hospital at least a week and then on to rehab. cards and prayers are appreciated. Thanks a million!

Update Aug 17
Regina had another surgery yesterday. She developed a bad infection that was draining alot so they had to open her back up and clean it all out. They were also able to extend her leg 1 cm. There is som bone rotting but it should grow back. They had to staple her leg back due to the condition of her leg from all the incisions. She is still pretty doped up. They have had to try different anesthesias due to the frequency of her surgeries. Some seem to keep her sedated much longer and this is one of them. They do not send her to rehab since she has been so many times and knows what to do. The problem is she gets into trouble with her pain meds and then does things she shouldn't do....such as go upstairs. She did that this past week and that may have caused some of the problem. She was in no shape to go anwhere without a walker or supervision. She had been dopey and sleeping all day so my brother ran out to get dinner. When he got home about 30 mins later, she had gone upstairs. Thank God she didn't start back down yet or it could have been really bad. Anyways....it's going to be a long hard road ahead.

Oh, Sherry, I'm so sorry this situation is still so difficult for your brother and Regina and for you. I feel like I want to send your brother a card of encouragement, would that be inappropriate? I've been sending cards to Regina and I'll send her another Thinking of You this week. I'll keep you in my prayers also. Kay

Kay, he would love that. I know he was so excited the last time that "HE" got a card and he thought that was so awesome. Yes, it is very tough times for him. It is just unreal all he has been through and there is just no end in sight yet. Thanks so much for being so kind and thoughtful!

Update 8-19....Regina had to go in for another surgery on Thursday. She developed an infection. They thought everything was fine but then a doctor came in today and said she has another infection. My brother will have to wait until tomorrow to talk to her doctor. They are both very shook up and depressed. She wants to die. Please keep them in your prayers and the cards you are sending truly make her day. Thanks so much!

Sherry ... I'm so sorry to hear of this development! Regina and John have been dealing with these horrible setbacks for several years, haven't they? I just stopped and had prayer for all of you because I know this is such a continuing heartbreak for the entire family. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
