Default Cards for my mother

My 86 year old mother fell while gardening on May 31. She broke her neck at the C2 vertibrae. We are so very thankful to God that she has no paralysis. However, she has to wear a very restrictive and uncomfortable minvera brace for at least 6-8 weeks. The ligament around the break also was torn which is causing problems swallowing so she is on a pureed food and thickened liquid diet as well.

She appreciates all the prayers she can get so at a minumum please keep her in your prayers. She has a long slow recovery ahead of her and she does stamp and craft (her username here on splitcoast is #1coffeelover) so I know she would enjoy receiving some cards as well. If you would like to send a card please PM me for the address.

Thanks,
Kerry

I just wanted to thank everyone who is sending cards to Mom. She is thoroughly enjoying them.

We saw the neurosurgeon on Monday for our first follow-up visit. He was pleased with how the fracture is healing. She has to continue to wear the current brace until July 15 when he expects to switch her to a less restrictive/more comfortable brace for another 4-6 weeks. Her swallowing is improving and the therapists are slowly adding more solid foods back to her diet. She is moving around much better, gaining strength, and getting better sleep. Things are slowing improving.

Mom was "fitted" for her new brace today. We are hopeful that the neurosurgeon will switch her to the new brace on Tuesday. Her swallowing has improved enough that the therapist gave her the thumbs up to go back to eating basically whatever she wants (no more pureed food), although there are some things that will still just be a little too difficult with the current brace. One of her last big hurdles is to get the lymphedema cleared up (from not being able to lay down/recline since the fall) and the blisters on her feet (from the lymphedema) healed.

We both greatly appreciate all the cards and prayers that have helped Mom get through the days and weeks.

Good news! Mom got her new brace today. She wears it for at least 4 weeks until the next follow-up with the neurosurgeon but she can take it off to shower and even to eat, as long as she sits still and doesn't move her head around. She still has to wear it to sleep, but it is much more comfortable than the old brace so we are hoping she might be able to transition back to at least a recliner where she can put her feet up at night.

Kerry, I just mailed another card to your Mom today. I'm rejoicing to hear how well she is recovering!
