Default NSR: I see yer problem, right there...

My husband is doing laundry tonight, his plumbing clothes. He put his clothes in the dryer and turned it on. It made a thunking noise and quit. He grumbles a bit, tries again, nothing. So he comes in, gets some tools, and goes back out to the garage to disassemble the dryer.

I was sitting here finalizing my last SAB order, when, about three minutes later, I heard a very loud, very surprised "Holy Sh**!" I went to investigate, and had to come back for my camera (so I could identify it and see if we should call in professionals or handle the thing ourselves!)

Pic attached.

Oh my gosh... that is very scary to see such a thing as a snake in your dryer vent. I would've been out of the house in seconds and there wouldn't have been a picture taken! didn't that snake know that he didn't belong there?

Nah. I've seen a few of those (out hiking--not in my garage). I think it was a run-o-the-mill Texas Rat Snake. It was really long. DH managed to get it loose (it had a few cuts--one pretty deep), but it slithered out the same way it came in. Hopefully it will be okay, and I won't find a dead snake in my driveway in the morning! Live snakes I can handle. Dead snakes.... ew.

I nearly jumped out of my chair when I enlarged the photo! It looks like a diamondback rattlesnake to me. Where do you live and how warm (or cold is it)? Talk about trying to find a warm hole!

I showed your picture to my husband and he says, "if I'm out of town, who would you call if you found a snake in the laundry room because I don't think there's anyone in town to take care of it". I'm like, "we live in northern Canada...we don't really have snakes" (nothing more than a little garden snake, which I have never seen...but I hear they exist ) and he's like, "yeah, but what if you did?". So I tell him, "I think if snakes were an issue here, there would probably be someone to deal with them here as well". He seemed to really want an answer from me, who would I call? Which would be like someone in California being asked if a Polar Bear was in their basement, where would they go for help?! It's not going to happen - I don't need a back-up plan! Glad he's concerned for me and all...

Sorry! NSR means Not Stamping Related. Didn't occur to me to put a warning on it! My mom is phobic about snakes, so I've been called to rustle smaller ones out of her garage many times. We live in Texas, and we have reptiles of all sorts because it's warm.

Once we figured out the guy in the picture wasn't venomous, we were okay. He was hurt and trying hard just to get away, so it was kinda sad, thinking he might be mortally wounded. He was trying to get OUT--his head was in the exhaust tube, his back half wrapped around the fan inside the dryer (the cause of the cuts).

Here's a web page with more info on rat snakes: http://www.houstonherp.com/TxRat.html

And I did manage to get my SAB order in while DH was re-assembling the dryer.

My answer would have been "Holiday Inn, honey. I will call the Holiday Inn and they will take good care of me until you get home."
I live on the TX coast and know people who have found them behind their appliances. They say the snakes are as scared of us as we are of them, but I don't believe it. I am very very scared of them.
I think if I were you I would take a week off of laundry duty. You deserve it.

Poor little snakey! As a vet tech, I've seen many snakes......the largest one was about 80#......got into a fight with it's food & got an infection. That one really didn't like what I was trying to do to it (clean it's wounds, hold it for the dr to draw blood & give it oral medicine.......

Default plumbers

The snake looks quite beautiful!! (not a rattler)

It reminds me - two years ago I had a slab leak in the garage. When the plumber moved the washer, he saw a very dead rat. He took off running and refused to come back until I removed it!

My two cats now keep the rodents at bay

I would feel bad for him too. I had to do some snake-wrangling last year in my son's room. There was a snake on the end of his bed. I had already gotten the dog out of her crate, so she was prancing around the room. I didn't want to get him excited, thereby getting the dog excited and interested in the snake and get bitten. So I was very casual about it. I put a shirt over its head, then grabbed his head and his body, and took him outside. Snakes are very strong!
