Sometimes it seems that SCS may be a safe place to vent about a family~friend~work related situation that you may like a little advice about, but I found it to be very frustrating to see my log in name next to my real name and a direct link that I had posted here. It has just been a reminder to me that anything you type may be archived for a long time and when it's on the internet just remember that it has the potential to be forever out there.

Anything you post in a public forum is Google-able, that's for sure.
Since your real name isn't here on Splitcoast, unless you typed it in a post, it wouldn't be searchable. Your name isn't on your profile or on your signature. Unless your real name is Gizelabella, Polyshrink Goddess
If you type anything in a forum that requires usergroup permissions - like the Fan Club forum, etc. it's not Googleable. But if you can log out and see forum content, so can Google.

Oh also, however, if you have a Google Profile - as I do, because I use Gmail and Blogger, you will see your full name in all Google searches - but no one else will. Have someone else Google you and see what the results are when you are not logged into your google account in your browser and the results will be vastly different.
I'll have to see if it comes up when someone else is logged in besides myself.

I google myself and the names of my children quite often. In the case of me, my name is out there because I'm into genealogy and because of my work with different volunteer circles. It is a good thing when it comes to my reputation. If I'm selling something or arranging a group to order tape, I want people to know I'm not scamming them and I'm not some random internet person. My phone number is not unlisted and it would be fairly easy to find out a lot about me. I'm very careful with my credit cards and other financial information so as to not be a victim of identity theft.
In the case of my kids, they're both adults now but when they were in their young teens and being online, I'd google them quite often. They thought I was computer savvy enough to see EVERYTHING they've ever done on the computer so that helped keep them in line. The only thing that concerned me about my daughter, being a fairly high level athlete, many of her personal stats were online where any pedo could see them if they so desired (height, weight, hometown, along with pictures) but it was good information for scouts to see when they were scouting players. I weighed that against all the protective techniques we taught them to prevent them being abused and figured we taught them enough to keep them safe. We can't all live in a bubble and have to take some low risks within reason.
I've always made it my policy to never, ever, never, never say (or type online or in email) anything about anybody that I wouldn't hesitate to say directly to that person. That is hard to do sometime but I don't want things to come back and bite me in the behind. I don't need that kind of drama and it shows a person's character when they are true to their word LOL!

Oh I didn't know that! Good to know. I haven't googled myself in awhile.
That sounds so dirty. HAHAHAHAHA
But when I did awhile back, I found someone with my name who is apparently a well-known illustrator.

Yes, it is dirty ... we're stalking ourselves LOL! There's an educational type of person with my name, some sort of genetic research. If only I was that scholarly LOL!

oh my...I just googled myself and found my obituary...Nov 2009 I died...well someone else with my name. How sad..she was only 17. Going to do some more looking.
blessings.
I was annoyed once when I googled an image for an ATC swap and it was mine with my SCS name beside it. I guess even SCS can't keep things from appearing elsewhere.
Apparently I live in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Canyon Lake CA, Colorado, and Waconia MN, among other places. Some of my occupations are real estate agent, travel blogger, environmentalist, student, and martial arts expert.

No wonder I'm so bloody tired.
LOL!! That's AWESOME!!!

Oh my, I had not googled myself in a while. I have always thought my name was sort of unique, but evidently not.
Turns out a person with my name was charged with larceny in Florida, auditioned for Big Brother on Youtube, is a dermatologist in Houston, and is the daughter of a gospel pianist.

At least all of you have names you share with other PEOPLE. I googled myself and found a PIG with my name!! No kidding. The owners of this pig had the same last name as mine, and they named their pig with MY first name. Even more of a big coincidence, this pig lived in MY TOWN!! The owners had a book store. So once they wanted to promote their store and they threw a birthday party for the pig. It appeared as a small sidenote in the local newspaper. A few of my co-workers cut out the clipping and joked to me about it, asking why they weren't invited to "my" birthday party. LOL. I finally did go down to the bookstore and told the owners that I had the same name as their pig!! <grin> I never did see the pig though.

I have heard that some ppl have the same names as criminals. So when they try to close on a home, or do any legal action they have to sign some sort of form stating that they promise they are not that certain person.
If you ever google yourself unless your name is very unusual-- there are a mix of folks....Sorry dear heart,a pig was named after you. Remember, he is clearly a well read pig.

I've got an unusual first and last name so I don't run across others other than me. But I'm clean. My published research, teaching profile, and stuff from a board I was a part of in 1996 (!!!!) and that's pretty much it.
Oh yeah....and apparently someone tried to start a trash bash of me on Topix so that thread comes up. Thankfully I'm fairly boring so all that fisherman got was that I'm a great mother and a lesbian and some making fun of my name. I considered posting something saucy that would make me look more exciting but since I am a public school teacher, I decided that wouldn't be so smart. LOL

My name is fairly common. I googled again, and in one reference I found out there are 1726 gals with my name (not sure how they determine duplicates, etc.!) with an average age of 75. So I am average LOL!!!
In glancing at the first 20 pages of links I found myself twice. One was a card some one posted here on SCS, and the other a link to my guest designer spot on a blog.
Otherwise, the most interesting was a boxer with my name (she won her fight BTW) - and countless obituaries.
I do get frustrated with google - especially when they link so many duplicates, and names with other spellings. I find it hard to sort out what I really am searching.
Woo-hoo, just now - I ran into an "alter-ego" with my exact name (same spelling) for the very first time ever! I've got a baby registry out there! Sheesh, I didn't realize I was pregnant.
Sigh - googling myself is usually quite boring. I usually only find the "real me", as my name isn't extremely common, and I spell my first name differently than most gals with the same name. Links to some of my crochet work & other such stuff pop up here & there, some harmless links to social media type stuff and a few dull message board posts that no one would be interested in. Nothing "revealing" or even terribly interesting to anyone else now. There are plenty with names that are *close* to mine - first or last name spelled just a bit differently - but it looks like I'm such an oddball, that no one else wants to "be me" LOL!
But it is kinda funny to see items from way back. There is *still* a page out there on a south african storefront site, with only my name mentioned briefly (among others) as one of the winners in a nice sweepstakes they had back in 1996. That seems to be the oldest existing record of me online that I've found so far.
I don't have a pig named after me, I'm envious! That would be really cool. (Pot-belly pigs are incredible animals - by far, the most highly intelligent animals I've ever encountered in my life, and I've dealt with almost everything at some point or another...)

My husband was questioned in a rape/murder. He happened to be working at an apt complex (along with 20 other men) when it occurred. Because a painter said they saw him leaving that unit, he was a person of interest. Now, he had never
Been in the unit as forensics proved and he was working elsewhere that day which he could prove, but the Public Defender who represented the person who was convicted kept bringing him up by name in the trial. So every time he googled himself, the court transcript came up first. And stayed there because the two officers involved were murdered a couple of years later so google inquiries about them kept popping the transcript back to the top.
Luckily, twenty years and a whole lot of info in the web, it now isn't in the first page. We do not go looking for it because we don't want anything to increase it's popularity.
