Editing to add:

Book: A Thousand Splendid Suns
Author: Khaled Hosseini
Hostess: Roxie (morgainegeiser)
Discussion begins Dec. 15
Hi ladies! Welcome to the SCS Book Club! If you have any questions please let myself or Heather know and we'll be happy to help.
Heather already posted the book for this month, so if you're interested pick up a copy from your local bookstore, put your feet up and join us! Keep a pen and paper handy in case you have any questions or comments along the way and we can discuss them later in the month.
Happy Reading!

This is going to be fun!!! Can you give a brief overview of the book? Thanks!
Kati
Sure, Kati. It is a fictional story about a post-apocalyptic America where the oceans are empty and the skies no longer filled with birds. It follows a father and his son as they struggle to survive in the harsh new environment on their journey toward the coast in search of other survivors.
I have not read it, it's fairly new, but is on many bestseller lists and sounded interesting so I thought we could all check it out together.

Stef and I discussed having the current month's hostess send a little 'gift' to the next months hostess such as some post-its or even a bookmark. Does this sound OK to everyone?
And, speaking of hostesses, please start thinking of books that you might want to read. They don't have to be new books, but they should be ones that no one else has read yet (we could poll the group to find out if you think this is a possibility).
We have a book for May, so about mid-May we will be looking for a June hostess.
I'm so excited about this book club. I've been wanting to join for such a long time. I would be interested in being the hostess for June. I can wait to start reading the book.

Candi
That sounds great Candi. I'll doublecheck with Heather, but as far as I know we dont' have anyone for June so you're it! We won't need your book title and author until mid-May, so keep your eyes peeled for something you think sounds interesting. Also keep in mind that if you're the hostess for June, you'll be responsible for "treating" the July hostess. Nothing big, just a little something like a neat pen and pad or a handmade bookmark or something like that....
Happy Reading!

We have to wait all the way til April 28 to talk about it! lol
I'm over half way through now! I wasn't sure if I'd like this book, but I do! Good choice! =)
I just finished it today - I'm with you - it is hard not to wait until the 28th.
I am glad to be over with the book, that is for sure!!

Hi everyone, I am interested in joining but I am going to have to wait until the May book. I don't think I can finish this book in 2 weeks since I am sucked into another. But, please put me down as joining!
Thanks!
Thanks! I got so excited I went and bought the book for April. So, I am going to give it a whirl this weekend to see how far I can get. Do you guys think you can hold off talking about it? Please - o - please??
I haven't finished yet so i can hold off. Been working late and then had my last opera of the season last night. (I think this is the 3rd thread I've mentioned it in. sounds like i'm braggin or something, lol) As a result I haven't had much time to read. If you can dedicate time to reading it, you will fly through the book. It reads very fast and is quite interesting.
Welcome!!
Of course we can hold off for a little while! I just didn't want us all to be finished and doing nothing while we waited for the deadline. It isn't a problem to give you until the 28th (as originally planned) to finish up.

I think for me anyway, this book is one of those that haunts you day after day and it feels like you just need to talk about it with someone!! I have never read a book like it.
Have a great weekend!

It's a good thing it reads fast!! I had the hardest time getting my hands on a copy. Our library had two copies and both were out. Our neighboring county's library had 43 copies and they were all OUT!!!!
I went to Borders--they were out!! I was beginning to wonder---that was just too much of a coincidence. I checked B&B in the fiction section and they had no copies!!! I decided to ask someone at the desk---turns out they had some copies in a promo endcap for 30% off bc. it is an Oprah's Book Club feature! Sheesh---no wonder I couldn't find it!!
I'm on it now though!!

LOL! At Borders it was supposed to be in the 'literature' section. (which scared me a little, lol, I usually read fantasy and detective stories) But it was in a best seller section. Had to have a clerk help me find it!

I am almost finished with the book. The more I read the harder it is to put down. I was almost late for work because I started reading this morning and lost track of time. I just can't imagine it having a happy ending, but I can't wait to find out. I don't know what I'm going to do when I'm finished reading it!!

Miss Minx,
I too am from NoVa and tried the same thing with the library. I put myself on the waiting list but since I didn't think I'd get it in time, I found it at Costco!
I have just started to read it but think that the ladies who have finished and NEED to talk about it could pm each other... I know sometimes when I finish a book I just can't wait to talk about it with someone
It honestly will not take you much time to catch up. Once you get used to the fact that he doesn't use quotation marks in conversations it reads incredibly fast!
And it's already the 18th, so just 10 more days to start out discussion. Time flies!

Great!!! I picked up the book at lunchtime, can't wait to start it tonight!!! Its been a long time since I was this excited about a book. (The last *REALLY* good book I read was The Other Bolyene Girl by Philippa Gregory)
