Well, I just read "Pope Joan," by Donna Woolfolk Cross, which was wonderful. I've heard it's very popular among book groups and I can understand why. If no one else has any suggestions, that would be a good one.
If there are people interested I'm game. The past few months it seems I've been reading the book all alone I understand summer is prime time vacation time and many have kids home so we're all probably busier.
I know we are running late for August but how about we take stampingkaren's suggestion
If you start a new book for September, please let me know. I would love to read and chat as we go...!!
I used to love to read. Realized this past week I have not read an entire book in a year. I am going to make this a priority for myself as having a good book going has always been a happy thing for me. Thanks. I will check back or pm me!
I've found that www.readinggroupguides.com is a good place to look for some start off questions. Many publishers and authors websites also have some suggested discussion questions. I've also gotten some group book suggestions from looking at Oprah's book club picks.
I just reserved the copy of Pope Joan. I can't believe that in our 7 branch library system there is only 1 copy and of course it's checked out. So it might be a couple of weeks before I can even get the book.
Who wants to pick September's book out? It's up for grabs and we probably should go ahead and list it so that we can have time to round up a copy of it.
I just sent you all a PM so we could get this going, and you would for sure get the message in case you didn't get back to this thread.
Karen has agreed to put together some discussion questions. I know some of us won't be able to get the book for a week or so, but let's go ahead and plan on "Pope Joan" for August/September just to get us started. And start the next book around September 18th.
We need ideas for the next book so post them here...............
I'm jazzed to get this going, I can't wait to start the book and get your input I think that is the best way to read
I good for jumping back in for September, but my August is a little crunched. I actually have a couple books I just picked up from the library, so I have to get through those before I reserve a new one. I think I've read all the books, but the last few I was weeks behind so I never participated in the discussions.
Jodi (needsmorestamps) had this started with the book titles and links to the discussions up through July when I jumped in to just ask if this was still going strong. I don't even know how to do those link thingys which seems to be the best way to go. I would like her to continue to be our "leader" if she is willing and its ok with the rest of you.......at least to help get the discussions going etc.
Karen (stampngkaren) will be starting the discussion thread for the August/September book Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross, She will need to let us know if it will be a link or just questions on this post.
Sheri (Stampernmore) has suggested "Mockingbird" by Charles J Shields for September/October and will lead (post discussion questions)
kthaman will pick the book for October/November
hedgiemania, shuber, myself and ANYONE else then can decide what months if any we want to pick a book and lead/post discussion questions.
I'm thinking our reading time will go from the 16th to the 15th or so since we are starting in the middle of the month and some of us don't have the August book "Pope Joan" yet.
I think that is a great idea. We could even start a new thread each month for the discussions and post there. The dates from the 15th to the 16th of the next month are good, because if people are waiting for books it will take a while.
Thanks for your help with this tmcgarvey and needmorestamps
I'm haveing issues getting Pope Joan as well, I'm gonna go tomorrow and see if Barnes and Nobel has it or one of the other book stores. My library only has one copy and 2 others are ahead of me on the wait list.
I am also on the wait list for Mockingbird but at least I am next!!
Tricia, thanks for getting this started up again. Summer is busy for all and now that the kids are back in school (YIPPEEEE!!) we all might have a little more time.
Looks like we've got the next couple of books picked out which is great. Let's try to post the books a little ahead and I like to reserve them from the library and sometimes it takes a while to get them in. How about we leave this thread and start some others. I'll keep this updated with the links.
How about whoever is leading the discussion start a new thread so that we can check in whenever we are done. Looks like that will be about the 15th of each month?? Maybe starting another thread each time a book is picked also so we've got 2 threads each month. One for the "announcement" of the next month's book and another one for the book discussion. Maybe that will help keep things easier ????
Ok, I've just re-read Tricia's post and some of the info is sinking is If we read from the 16th-15th. We should start a new thread about the 16th to discuss. And if possible the "announcement" thread should be the 1st so that others will have about 2 weeks to find the book.
The links are a great idea and will work great. I hope everyone who wants to participate will jump in.
As I posted in the other link, I got Pope Joan today and have been reading most of the day. It is an AWESOME book, and I can't wait to add my view to the discussion questions. I have read the first couple of questions and the one discussion and it is quite thought provoking. I am acutally glad I purchased the book.
I also have Sept. book on reserve. so a good idea to post the choice around the first of the month so we can get it reserved sounds like most of us are dealing with small library branches.
I just remembered to come back and check this thread.
Jodi - if you check with the moderator, they will probably give you edit capability on this one thread - that way you can keep the links list at the top up-to-date. If you don't want to do that, I'm willing to give it a go.
I already have my book picked for Oct/Nov, so Oct 1 I will post the announcement (right?).
Thanks gals for keeping this alive - I know summer was tough, but hopefully we can all settle back down to a routine again.
