I'm wondering if you think having security letters on comments means less comments - or if there is any downside. What do you think? Should I turn my security off? I currently have it set as on. I would love your opinions!

Everything I touch turns to CRAFT!
Come say hi on my blog - The Crafty Touch Blog
I am not a fan of word verifications. I will put up with them when I am on my desktop and have some spare time but not on my iPhone. I do actually use/comment from my iPhone a lot too. I think they take up so much extra time and can dissuade me and others from commenting. Like google reader wasn't comment unfriendly enough. Lol. I don't get much spam or enough to find it oppressive so I just delete anything unsavory when I am reading and appreciating any comments that I feel lucky to get. As there is such a big wonderful lot of crafty blogs vying for our attention. All that to say is thumbs down for word verifications.
The standard these days seems to be to take the verification off - that's what all the professionals are recommending. I have a WordPress blog and I use a plug-in called Akismet that does a pretty good job of screening spam. I took word verification off a long time ago and I haven't had any problems.
I have mine turned off but I still have to approve each comment. Lately I've had a lot more spam than the past few months but nothing crazy maybe 2 or 3 spam comments a day. I think it's easier to leave comments when there isn't a verification but it doesn't deter me from leaving a comment if there is. I think if you're going to approve of each comment anyway there isn't a need for the word verification. If you just want it all to go to the blog without you having to deal with it the word verification will keep you from having to go back and delete later once it's already on your blog.
There's a huge movement to turn word verification off. I participate in lots of challenge blogs and they all ask us to turn comment moderation on and turn word verification off. That way, the comments go into a "pending approval" folder and you choose which ones you want to publish. I do this on blogger.
I turned off word verification, but also disabled anonymous commenting AND have it set so that I have to moderate if my blog posts (not comments) are more than two days old. I mostly use the blog to post for blog hops and challenges with inLinkz or Mr Linky, so most everyone who wants to comment will do so in the first two days. After that, I moderate comments and can reject anything spammy.
I prefer no word verification...with moderation...and the blogger spam box has helped get about 99.99% of the bogus comments. It is easier for me to post comments on blogs without the verification. Sometimes, I just skip blogs that have these codes...just so I can see more things/ideas/projects.
I still have word verification on mine but I got spammed badly a couple of times with really ugly posts. I don't always have time to check comments every day so I left it on.
Word verification often stops me from leaving comments, especially on a blog hop, challenges, etc. I'm eager to see the art not try to figure out what the different letters/numbers are. Mine is off and blogspot has caught the 2 spams I've received.
I have it turned off also, but since I only have 1 subscriber and have only had a total of 5 comments since I started this blog I haven't run into any danger of spamming. I'd almost like to see a spammed comment just so I had something...almost! lol

i would say a big fat NO!!!
there's nothing more off putting than knowing after leaving one comment that you'll have to go thru the rigmarole if you comment on any other cards.
the reason it was introduced was to stop spam comments. but on blogger there's a spam filter so 99% of spam comments go into your spam folder anyway where you can just delete them or decide if they've been put in there by mistake.
also, if you enter any blog challenges, they won't leave comments on your cards if you have WV enabled as it just takes them too much time.

Mine is off but I approve each comment. It doesn't deter me from leaving comments though as on the iPhone, I often can't see if it is required or not until I scroll down further and by then I've already typed my comment.
I consistantly had issues with a lot (not all) of blogger WV processes. Too many times I commented and WV'ed only to have blogger not complete the process and show the comment I made. So I gave up commenting on a lot of blogs and participating in blog hops. I don't seem to have issues with Typepad WV's though - they are straight forward.
I didn't realize that blog hoppers were now being requested to turn VW off. I'll go and try a blog hop this weekend and see if there is an improvement.
