DOH! I strongly despise those things also!!! Drives me batty. I can't read the stuff so I give up and leave!!!

I hate music players. If I want to listen music I play my own cd or listening to the radio.

I voted music players. Can't stand them. Also, I've never heard of a tip jar. Anyone care to explain?

Tip Jars are a PayPal widget. Some readers like to express their appreciation for the information and knowledge shared on a particular blog, and if a Tip Jar is in place, they then have the option to leave a "tip" (nominal monetary donation of their choosing).

Tipping is, of course, entirely optional, not obligatory. Most bloggers, including myself, and JanTink, continue to provide the content, regardless of whether or not readers make a contribution in support of it.

Regarding the black background -- for me that is extremely hard to read. My dad was a sign painter and said that a light background with dark lettering is the easiest to read. I would have to agree with that. And the older I get, the bigger those letters are, the better.

Can someone explain how Google reader works? Right now I get notifications through email, but if there is a faster way, that would be great. Oh, and in simple terms, please... I'm computer challenged.
Not sure if anyone answered your question about google reader - it's a LIFESAVER! don't want to get TOO many emails in my In Box - so sign up at Google.com for an account and you can subscribe (to any blog that has a feed assigned to it) to be notified of updates to their blog. It's a great way to be organized. I have them subdivided by: favorites, non-stamping blogs, bloggers who comment on my blog (because I want to return the courtesy) and so forth. Then I read in the importance of my choosing.

interesting thread - I think my tolerance level is so much lower than y'alls because I have a lot of things that turn me off but I don't want this to turn into a soap box for me or anything. I voted for music. It also irritates DH when I'm on the laptop & I click on someone's blog to make a comment & the music startles us BOTH. So, on Google Reader I set up a set of blogs for those with music so I can determine when I want to be bothered by it.

Another thing is when there is not a 'preview' of the blog post (like the pictures) and you HAVE TO click on the blog open in a new tab or browser in order to see it.

Definitely music. If you're going to put music on your blog, at least let the visitor choose to play it. Don't have it play automatically. I surf at work on breaks and it's hard to do it discretely when you have music blaring!!

I'm not a fan of too many things blinking and popping up. Makes it more difficult to visit a blog. But to each her own.

Word verification- well, there are a lot of spammers out there. And even though it's a pain, it cuts down on spamming a TON.

Many don't have a choice about turning on WORD VERIFICATION, due to the excessive porn spamming among the comments.

Knowing that, and the fact that I personally don't have time to review and delete porn spam from the comments of my own blog, I don't mind jumping that hoop at all to leave a comment at someone else's.

Okay, I think I am going to rephrase my complaint. I had previously posted that I thought Tip Jars were "tacky". After reading the responses, I realized that "tacky" is not really the word I should have used. Many of you have really made some good points why a person would use tip jars. I am not too proud to admit that I was wrong! Tacky, no! ------but do I like Tip Jars? No, not really. So I am sorry if I offended anyone (Jan, Julie, and others).

I didn't vote because my choice isn't up there.
I do not like ads, but more that that isblogs that ADVERTISE other people---like other card artists or stampers etc...NOT all...but the ones that do not need to be complimented anymore, as in they are already full of themselves. I am sure you understand my meaning.

anyway, I'll go vote for the third party ads

However, last year, when my husband almost lost his job, I was asked by some of my readers to put the tip jar up there so they could help keep my blog going. The subsequent donations kept my blog going for a year. Luckily, my husband's job was saved at the last minute.

I have left it up because some folks actually want to contribute. They like what they get from my blog and want to give back. I don't get a huge amount in there and I don't expect people to contribute. But I do get enough to pay for my blog and really that's all it's there for. I'm a stay at home mom and with three kids, there isn't a lot leftover for extras. I know I could have a free blog through Blogger (and I used to have my blog there) but I use Typepad instead of Blogger because it's better and allows me to host my own files for downloading (and there are lots of requests for files, which take up a lot of time if you have to email them out to all who request them) and to keep a photo gallery on it. Plus, I can block nasty trolls from commenting, which is another problem I had last year.

So, anyway, that's why I have a tip jar and my guess is that is why other bloggers have one too. I am not making money off of unsuspecting passersby, I am not making a mint, and no, you don't have to put anything in there if you don't want to. The blog is still free to read. It's just there for those who feel moved to throw something in. And since every year until my husband retires, we will probably go through this crap, I'm keeping it. We still haven't heard about whether his program will be cut next year or if he will still be teaching it...lovely reward after 20 years of dedication, eh?
I do not have a tip jar, but see nothing wrong with having one. We all go out and buy idea books or mag. what is so wrong with supporting someome who gives us great ideas on their Blog.
I am really okay with whatever a person likes on their Blog as long as it is nice. Hey. Coffee shops have tip jars so can Blogers!

I do not like the slide shows - they never seem to do justice to the projects.

I also cannot stand the tracker that tells where you came from (like so and so's blog) and where you are from (it is never the right city - usually the wrong county - this happens both at work and home) - it just seesm sort of creepy to me. I have taken a lot of blogs out of my favorites because of this tracker.

The music doesn't bother me b/c my work laptop doesn't have a sound card and my home computer usually has the sound turned down. A few times I have heard songs that I love and have gone to itunes to load them on my ipod - LOL!

As for feedjit--
For those who think it's invasive, you can go to a person's blog and on their Feedjit, you can actually click on "Options" and there is an option for that feedjit to ignore your browser. That way, anytime you go to that blog, your info will be ignored and won't pop up. I don't think many blurfers out there realize that you can control that.

I had it on my blog for a quick minute and I did remove it...really, I was just curious to see where people were coming from and it was pretty cool to see people from all over the world coming to my little blog
yeah - I have feedjit - I don't think it is intrusive. i mean, if you are visiting my blog, that is a compliment. If you are visiting my blog but trying to hide the fact that you are visiting... well... that is not a compliment - it is more like stalking - lol

I think blogging is a personal expression of oneself. I try not to be too critical of someone elses blog even if it doesn't please my blogging taste buds.

I do tend to be drawn to blogs with less journaling and more photos.
I will take time to look at photos rather than reading a bunch of stories.

Another vote for music.

But here's a new one. Blogs that are "advertised" but never updated. Why have a link that says "Check out my blog!" if you haven't added anything to it in the last 12 months?

That, and the whole totally lowercase, bad spelling, run on sentence thing too.

This is funny. One night I was doing some blurfing, everyone was asleep and it was dead silent. I had forgotten that earlier in the day I turned the volume up on my speakers. (must have been getting psyched up for work.)

I came across one of the blogs where the music started as soon as I entered...scared the bejeebers out of me!! I nearly jumped 10 feet out of my chair!! Yes always remember when blurfing make sure you have your speakers turned off. Just in case

One thing I find with Blog surfing....although very addictive, is that it isn't always inspirational. Rather I find it a time waster. Before you know it you have been on there for a whole hours where as if you had been at your stamping desk you probably would have been able to make a card or two....My motto is create, not procrastinate just my two little cents worth.

I've got vision issues that get better and worse. There are times when that word verification is something that I just can't read. The good sites have a spot where I can click to get a different type of verification that I can complete, but there are times when I'm stuck trying to squint and guess.

actually, I should have re-worded that. I have since thought about it & it's so helpful because before I turned mine on, I was getting spammed. Then I decided to just do the word verification because I didn't have the time to moderate ALL the comments (working full-time) what I really want to say is the word verification that rejects you even though you are certain you typed the right letters, weird, I know.

Tip Jars, and personal posts. I go to scrap blogs (or stamp) to see crafts- not to read about the life & times or whomever. I love people who do seperate blogs for each. I have 3: scrap, personal, & weight loss.

Especially for people who link up thru SCS or other boards, they come for the ideas, not for the hoopla of life.

I think most readers would agree that just having a music player is fine, as long as it doesn't play automatically. I have mine set so that it only plays if the reader chooses to press play, and I haven't had any complaints. In fact, I've still had people comment on the fact that they like my playlist. See, it CAN work!

Good luck~

I thought I was the only one that ever happened to. It made me question my sanity and vision.

Guilty as charged! I cannot separate my art from my hoopla, but I try to balance it out. All my posts are personal, but there are very few that don't have examples. I rarely post without having some eye candy. I like to read blogs that have some personal commentary and the strictly craft ones, too.

Ok, so I don't have a blog but I do visit some.
What gets me to ditch them - music has to be number one. Using Google Reader it's not a problem for reading, but when I know there is music waiting to pounce on me, I am much less likely to click through and leave a comment.
Slide shows - offer me the option, don't have it start playing as soon as I view the blog. If I have time and am interested I'll watch, but I don't want loads of photos taking forever to download when I am busy.
The third party advertising passes me by, I just ignore it almost everywhere anyway, LOL.
Messy detailed backgrounds which make it hard to read the writing...again not a problem in Google Reader, but in the past it definitely put me off more than one.

I Love music but I hate it when it blasts at me all of the sudden
