Spellbinders announced on June 11th that, effective immediately, co-founder Stacey Caron is �stepping away from all day-to-day business activities within the company� but �will continue to be an important creative driver� for the brand. No reason was given for the change at the company.
Caron�s husband and company co-founder, Jeffrey Caron, left his own previous role as CEO of the company in 2013 when an outside investment firm was brought in following the company�s disastrous patent infringement lawsuit against QuicKutz.

This is the first I have read of an outside investment firm being brought in to rescue the company .
The bad news for paper craft companies just keeps rolling in :shock:

I wonder if they overextended themselves (made too many new products too quickly), then lost the lawsuit, and then many other companies introduced thin dies that often were higher in quality (as perceived by some) than those made by Spellbinders. It will be interesting to see what comes next.
I would hate to see them go out of business as they still make dies that I look at and just love! However, recently it seems their products have not been up to the quality they were when they first started out. I still have intricate dies from years ago that cut beautifully. In recent years I stopped buying from them as it was just too much rig-a-ma-roll to try to get a decent cut on the beautiful, but complicated dies and then they had a while where the dies left paint or color on the edges of my cuts. I believe they used to manufacture in the US and then switched to China which may be part of the issue. I do think the Media Mixage line probably didn't sell well as I have seen them on clearance for as little as 5 cents. I just hope we don't continue to lose long term players in the paper crafts market!
Ah – perhaps this is the reason that Michaels was getting rid of all of their Spellbinders dies! Joann will be carrying their Sapphire die cutting machine and dies exclusively: Parker&Molly
If I read it correctly Joanns will have exclusive rights to the Sapphire Machine and the Sapphire dies . Not sure they will have exclusive rights to all of the Spellbinder products.
Spellbinder are my favorite dies, but the new Sapphire machine is really tiny and so are the dies. The dies are 2 & 1/2" or smaller . If a person wants the tiny dies they can cut them with any machine .

Yes its really tiny. I wouldn't buy it since I have a big shot but maybe someone who doesn't have any cutting machine might give it a try since it says its inexpensive. I didn't really see a price.
I was going to suggest if people want a small machine Spellbinders has the Artisan X-ployer But----
I could not find the Artisan X-ployer on the Spellbinder site AND the replacement cutting plates are only available at Spellbinders Paper Arts. Amazon has a couple of sets shipped from Spellbinders . Everywhere else I looked they are out of stock
Has the Artisan X-ployer been discontinued too?
I was considering buying an X-ployer because I read the rollers have more pressure, but if I can't get replacement plates in the future I won't buy it.
This will look very naive of me, but I bought Spellbinder and Sizzix products because I thought they would always be there if I needed replacement parts . :(

I never heard of the xplorer so I watched a youtube. It was new two years ago so if it's already gone, it sure didn't last long. It does look like a better option than that tiny little Sapphire.

It was introduced with the Mixed Media products and supposedly the rollers have more pressure to deal with the Bezels . I have seen DT members for Spellbinders use it for intricate dies and they cut more cleanly.
If that was discontinued it is a mistake on Spellbinders part . A lot of people have gotten into making jewelry . When they need replacement cutting plates and they are no longer available the machine will be useless .
