This book is one of my all time favorites!!!! I recommend it all the time! Glad your enjoying it. I'm reading the second in this series which was just released in hardcover called "World without End". So far....very good!!!!! Ken Follett also wrote "Eye of the Needle" which is a spy thriller set in WW11. It was also made into a movie about 10 years ago(I think...) I feel he's an excellent writer. Pillars and World are entirely different than what his writing is usually about.
