TLC91 - Knock on Wood
Many many thanks to DawnL for today's TLC....Faux Wood. She did an awesome job of describing the technique for us. You rock, girlfriend!
Here are some samples, which are gorgeous!
DawnL: Honeymoon in Maine
DawnL: Faux Wood Friends
Lacyquilter: Crimped for You
Lacyquilter: horse lover
bambi64: bareback birthday
jacobsenbd: wood grain deer
And here's how to do it:
Faux wood
Of course the easiest way is with the Dry Brush Wheel, but if you don’t have that it’s still possible!
Dry Brush Wheel: I find 2-3 colors work best, but play around with it! Start with the lightest color classic ink pad and ink up your wheel, roll it out on your cs in a line horizontal/vertical whichever way you want your wood panels to go. I start at different places to give it a ‘natural’ look. Carry on with the other colors and don’t worry if you get some dark spots, it’ll all come together in the end. When you’re satisfied with your ‘wood grain’ look, take your ruler and marker and draw your board lines, make your nail marks and voila!
Grab an old toothbrush (DH’s will do), make sure it’s a flat one, some reinkers, a ruler and a marker. Again 2-3 colors, but there are no rules so have fun!
Drop several drops of reinker on a flat surface (old plate, coffee can lid, styrofoam tray), starting with the lightest color ‘smoosh’ (technical term) your toothbrush around in it and drag it across your cs in a line horizontal/vertical whichever way you want your wood panels to go. You might want to start off your cs at different spots or inside and drag as you tend to get dark spots at the start, but this all adds character to your wood grain! Carry on with each color… now it’s gonna look like a mess but trust me, once you get the lines and nails it’ll look like the hardwood floor samples at Home Depot!
You can also use DTP if DH absolutely objects to you using his toothbrush (sheesh, they just don’t get it sometimes!). Just drag your classic pad across your cs as above. You’ll still get a wood grain look ;^)
Different colored cs will give different looks as will using white and gray inks give a real weathered look.
If you have questions, please ask. If you have suggestions, please share!
When you upload, please put TLC91 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread. If you are new to the challenges, or need help uploading or linking, click here.
I look forward to seeing all your creations!
As always, I am in search of suggestions for techniques for future TLCs! Please PM with suggestions and a link to the directions and/or a sample if you can.
My apologies to my Canadian friends concerning last week's Thanksgiving challenge. It was not my intention to exclude anyone. Please forgive me.

Here is my first card. It is lacking something . . . tell me what it is. The faux wood is a fun technique though.
Faux wood under snow
Here is one from my gallery that is the same type of thing, but without the lines for the boards. It still looks like wood.
Christmas rose
I really like the dry brush wheel.

Yep, Dawn, they work now. Awesome challenge ladies. I always wondered how Dawn got that look on her cards. Now I know, and I've got that wheel. I just don't use it enough.

The first links didn't work for me either. Thanks Dawn for posting the individual ones. Hope I can come up with something. I don't think I have this wheel.
