Smile Is there a magnetic cutting platform for the Cuttlebug?

Hi Everyone,
Is there a magnetic platform for the Cuttlebug similar to the new Stampin up magnetic Big Shot platform? I want to be able to place my metal dies face down onto the paper so I can see exactly what I am cutting without the fuss. Hope I don't have to buy the Big Shot just for this. Thanks so much! Christy

You could use the sheets of magnetic rubber. You can get them at just about any craft store. I think people also use the magnetic cover plates for heat vents.

I don't have the Genius Platform but a member of my church craft group has one. She has a Cuttlebug. Her comment was "Don't waste your money even with a coupon." She didn't really elaborate but just said her dies moved so she wasted lots of paper. I also don't know which CB she has-original or V2. I think it is a tight fit because the free dies set she got was very warped.

I am going to try the vent cover magnet sheet and 2 B plates. Well post after I have a chance to try this sandwich.

I was thinking about trying that too. Anxious to hear how it works.

I have the Genius from Lifestyle Crafts and it doesn't work the best in the older style Cuttlebug, it's a tight fit. The more I tried it though the easier it worked and if you place the die at the front end of the plate where your loading it helps grab it and pull it through but it's not ideal. But I'm told it does work perfectly in the newer style Cuttlebug and in other machines (worked perfectly in my Epic 6). I do really like the platform system itself, it holds the dies well, I tried several different brand of thin metal dies and they all worked. If any cares I did a review Review and Giveaway: Lifestyle Crafts Genius Platform System **GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED** Stamping | CraftGossip.com

I just reverse the sandwich to have my dies face down:

A plate
B plate that you use for cutting (I have separate cutting and embossing B plates)
paper with image face up
die with cutting side down
B plate or C plate depending on which company's dies you are using
shims as necessary

I have never had a problem with the paper shifting while rolling through.

Tried a piece of magnetic vent sheet with my older CB.

The sandwich I used:
A plate
3 pieces of CB embossing packaging cardboard
Magnetic sheet-magnet side facing up
Die-cutting side up
Cardstock
B plate

Needed 3 pcs of the cardboard for a shim to give enough tension for the die to cut. Die stayed where I placed it.

When I am 'fussy' cutting DSP, I just use a post-it to hold the die in place. Because of this, can't see me using the magnetic base enough to warrant the price bite in my crafting budget. The advantage of having the open dies, for me anyway, is being able to 'fussy' cut the DSP.

I had heard that it wasn't the same size as the platforms that come with the Cuttlebug. Plus they don't put any measurements for it in the catalog.

NO! I bought one and it doesn't fit. Just a hair too wide. Bummer!

Default cuttlebug magnetic board

I made my own using a piece of chipboard and a sheet of magnet sold at Joann's. Cut them both to fit my plates and they work great. The sandwich is
A plate
B plate
Magnet board
die cut
paper
B plate

Depending on thickness of paper may have to use an additional piece of chipboard or cardstock to make a tight fit. Also if using very detailed die cuts.

I bought a Genius and it doesn't fit. Too wide. The box said works with Cuttlebug and didn't say V1 or V2.

I think I'll play around with trying to use the heat vent magnetic board since I have one.

Took my cuttlebug to Michaels and asked to try the sizzix magnetic platform and it was off by probably 1/16 of an inch. Just enough so it will NOT fit in cuttlebug.

I bought one about a year ago that said it fit the Cuttlebug, but, as sunshine2 said, it's a smidgeon too wide for the Cuttlebug.

Wonder if anyone has tried to shave that little bit off so it would fit. But that may destroy the platform.

I thought about that, as i had done that with the Sizzix Extended Platform a few years back and my cuttlebug, but the way the platorm is and the magnet, i didnt think it will work. <sigh> back to Michaels i go to return it..i hate returning things!!

So, I have the original Cuttlebug. On a hunch, I purchased the Sizzix magnetic platform (with a 50% off coupon) to see if a bit of material could be trimmed off of both sides so that it would work for me. My friend trimmed both sides of the platform for me with his table saw to match the width of my Cuttlebug platform. I sanded the sides down a bit so they weren't so rough. It works great!

My work around is to use removable double sided tape to hold the die to the paper. I use the standard cutting sandwich (no shims). Position the die over the stamped image, tape it down, and turn it over so that the cutting ridges are the correct way. Works perfectly and I don't have to buy anything separate or shim plates.

This is exactly what I was going to say. As far as I have experienced, once the sandwich is made in the right order, it doesn't care whether it's lying on its back or its tummy, if you know what I mean? So I flip it whichever way suits me, depending on what sort of cutting job I'm doing (if I need to see through or not).

Me too. I have always cut that way. If you swing the top plate down like a hinge to trap the edge of the die it seldom moves.

what about using a heavy duty sander that is secured to a workbench and sanding down that little bit? Has anyone tried that? I really want the magnetic platform but I have the cuttlebug and refuse to buy another machine.

I'm another one that has always cut my dies face down to see where I'm placing them around my image. You do have to be careful when you put the sandwich into your machine, and keep it level and don't jiggle it as the dies will move then. I've gotten used to doing it this way and never have a problem with my dies shifting.

I have the Epic 6 and just purchased the sizzix magnetic platform. I hope based on the fact that I can cut Bigz dies with two B plates and the platform is the thickness of the Bigz dies, that I can use it in my machine with the two B plates. There will be dies in that sandwich that will make it thicker then just a Bigz die and two B plates. But that seems to roll easy.
If not, I can always get the Big Shot cutting pads, but I hope that they are the same thickness as the B plates. My plates actually came with my cuddlebug but i use them in my Epic.
The Epic is a half inch wider then the cuddlebug so I know the width will work.
I like the Epic better because it cuts more evenly then my Cuddlebug did. I had to crank harder to get stuff through my cuddlebug also.
I didn't go out and buy it, or I would have gotten a Big shot. It was in with a bunch of dies I purchased used off Craigs list and I like how it works.
I will find out when that plate gets here.
I did try the suggestion here of putting magnet on cardboard and it worked also with two B plates and the A platform but it didn't cut well as it gave things a more spongy feel to them. The magnet and chipboard were under the dies and there was some sponge to that setup, so I had to run my dies through a few times to get the cuts.

News flash....in my Joann' s, I found a Cuttlebug magnetic board! At first I thought it was a new plate. I was looking to see if they had some "B" plates. I picked it up and wondered why it was so heavy! Well duh! It was 3 of them stuck together! Since my brain still wasn't expecting a magnetic plate....I wondered what was stuck on the back of the package! Then the brain kicked in! I found a magnetic board for the Cuttlebug!! OMG! I was mentally doing the "happy dance"! But, trying to be very, very quiet about it!

I got the magnetic plate yesterday at my Joann's. It was $13.30 total. Thanks for the heads up on Joann's having them.

That's the one that I bought in the store a few weeks ago. Works great!
