I hate to say a single negative word about MISTI, but the blood blisters on my fingers, from those *&#@ jumping magnets, really hurt tonight. It's astonishing how far apart those magnets must be kept to stop one from jumping aboard the other, with part of my finger in between. I need the help of a neighbor to get the magnets apart again.
Has anyone found substitute magnets, or an alternative method of holding text-weight paper in place?
You could try removeable adhesive or washi or painters tape. If using tape, I would do the stand by stick it to your shirt or pants first to remove most of the tackiness!!!
I fastened a 5-6" strip of magnetic tape to my tool carousel and keep three magnets on the strip (one on each end and one in the middle). I pick up or return one magnet at a time and so far no problem.
Awhile back I read on the FB page that the problem with other magnets is that they don't hold the paper down for some of the really sticky clear stamps and definitely they don't hold if you use watercolor paper with a curl.
However, a friend of mine does have a handheld model; I'm waiting for her to get back in touch with me to find out who made it for her.

I have 4, and that works for me. I have found that after photopolymer stamps have been used a couple of times they don't pull your paper up. You can also rub the photopolymer stamps with your fingers or a white vinyl eraser to keep them from pulling up the paper, plus it helps in getting a better impression.

No - photopolymer will always stick. The magnets aren't meant to keep the stamp from pulling your paper up with PP stamps - they are mean to keep your paper in place WHILE you are stamping. The corner, and the rulers and the grid paper help you realign your cardstock so that you can re-stamp perfectly if your stamp is a PP/ sticky stamp.
I typically use one magnet. The corner and the guides are your friend. The magnet is to hold your paper down during the act of stamping.
I stamp on diecuts using my MISTI; a lot of time I use my dies with scrap paper, so I don't always have a perfectly straight piece of CS to line up in the corner of the MISTI. I was already interested in the MISTI, but watching this video by Iliana is what convinced me I needed one. And it's also the reason I need multiple magnets (at the 4:25 mark):

I read a post that says to wrap your magnet in colored duct tape leaving an edge like a tab to make it easier to pick them up and get them apart. I tried it and it works great!

I found some magnets at Home Depot. They are thin, but have a hole in the middle so they aren't quite as strong. I haven't really played around with them yet, but I broke 2 magnets and did not want to buy more on-line.
Mine have never broke, however they have jumped if too close together. They are thin and glossy so I can slide them apart. The size is 3/4" wide, and 1/16" thick. I got them on Amazon, but went back to my original link and it was gone. This is the type I bought: neodymium magnets 3/4 x 1/16 inch disc, and so far no problems. Good luck finding some.
Can I ask a stupid question? What's the deal with the MISTI magnets? How are they different from any other regular, readily-available magnets? Why won't regular magnets work? (I guess that's 3 stupid questions.) Thanks!

The dimensions are what matter and they do have rare earth 1/8" magnets at Home Depot, etc. The ones that come with the MISTI don't have magic fairy dust on them The height is critical though - because you need to be able to shut the lid when using photopolymer stamps with a magnet inside the base. So as long as you don't get one thicker than 1/8" you are good! I will say don't get the donut shaped ones - they aren't even half as strong.
I got the bar magnet that Jennifer McGuire showed in a video. It seems a lot stronger than the discs and you just need one. I put two wide strips of washi around it and left tabs to pull it up. It holds the paper down well. I bought mine at Simon Says Stamp for 6.49 approx. Amazon also has them. Just be sure the depth is right. I notice that all of the magnets seem just a little too thick, including the ones that come from the MISTI store. When the magnet is in the MISTI the lid doesn't lay flat against the ruler even when there is nothing else inside except the paper grid and the magnets. I'm not sure if that matters. Hoping it won't eventually spring the top. Anyway no more jumping magnets with the bar. Washi tape and a tab around the round ones helps get them separated but it doesn't help squashed fingers.
I used my mini misti for my stamp class this weekend and my magnets were broken by the time the 2nd person used it. By the time the 10 ladies were done - I had 6-8 little pieces of magnets. I won't be using it for class again unless I find an alternative. I did help sell at least 2 of them though - they said they loved it and were going to order one. No kick backs for me but cost me my magnets :-(.
I slammed my fingers so many times but the magnets didn't break. I was lucky I guess. You just buy one bar and then no more slamming. That's all I can think of. Wrapping them in washi tape with a tab helped me separate when they slammed together. It was kind of nerve wracking when I was working with three of those round guys on the mini Misti.
I got mine on Simon Says Stamp. I think they were about .50 cheaper on Amazon. I'm pretty sure the ones on Amazon are the same but I think I keyed in the exact name of them from the SSS site to make sure they were the same. They need to be 1/8th inch thick apparently. I ended up getting them on SSS because I had a couple of there things to order.
I managed to lose one of my magnets within a week of buying my MISTI. I bought similar, but smaller magnets on amazon (currently out of stock), but if I knew about the bar magnet then I would have purchased one of those instead.
The smaller magnets I bought jump together like the originals, but not as strong (less likely to hurt). They hold the paper in place just like the originals, so I'm happy.

The bar is super strong for better or worse. I just got tired of slamming my fingers between two magnets and pulling them apart. I use my mini Misti the most so it happened a lot. At least wrapping them in washi and leaving a tail helps makes them easy to separate. I left two tails of washi on my bar magnet also because it's hard to dig under it and remove it without a handle to pull. The one thing that's a really bad idea is using a bar magnet and a round one in any proximity. The bar is so much more magnetic that they attract even more swiftly and powerfully. No real reason to do that though. I locked down a corner that was not shifting but flipping up and found out the hard way.
Not about the MISTI magnets, but a bit more info on the Tonic/Tim Holtz Platform ones. These look very similar to the button batteries for tech stuff, but you can get them really close to each other, they don't snap to each other. Even if you put them together, they slide apart easily, and they hold cardstock in place, even when using photopolymer stamps. I've just used mine for a batch of 20 odd ATC's for a swap, using PP stamps.
This is how close I can leave them without any problems. So, when the legal issues surrounding your version is sorted, this may be useful info.
Something else that may be useful to MISTI users as well- I wanted my main stamp to be slightly off the edge of my ATC's. As there are no corners for the TH/Tonic one, I improvised. I lay one of my clear rulers along the edge of the platform, butted my ATC up to that, added the magnets, then removed the ruler before stamping. Worked perfectly.
This is the bar magnet Jennifer McGuire is now using, I believe, on amazon. I did a free make/take using the MISTI with TechniqueJunkies at a local convention and she had a suggestion for using the round magnets: turn one upside down so that they repel when they get near each other.
