Is it possible to bring coloring life back to Distress markers? I've barely used my black one and used the white for the first time last weekend and they both seem dried out. I don't have a store to take them back to, so I hope I can somehow extend the life of them.
I bought the complete set when they came out ( waited for them) the white came in dry. tossed it. and one of the should be browns is green.
and did eventually re-buy that one color. but, I store mine horizontally and since I use the pads a lot I thought these would be handy for touch-ups of miss stamped things and I find my self using them a lot to do direct to rubber things.
so, I am very curious to see if you can just drip the pad refills on the tips. but, none of the others of mine are even going dry yet. so, I wonder if they have issues with the white?
I store them horizontally and purchased them a few at a time starting when they came out. I'll ask Ranger. I don't have a place nearby to purchase the ink refills, plus it was the first time that I used the white picket fence.
great thread...is it better to store them horizontally instead of standing upright?
I have a white that doesn't work either....haven't bought too many as they can be pricey...
When they first came out, Tim said they could be stored either way. However, when I bought the set of 'limited edition' colours, they came with a label on the side saying to store horizontally, and apparently, that is the advice now. I guess they were finding drying out problems. I admit I bought the whole set when they finally got over here, and I love them. Not had any problems or issues with mine at all. I also agree about Ranger customer service- they are ace! I had two DI re- inkers that were all gloopy in the bottle. I'd bought a whole bunch of them from different places at a craft show, so didn't know exactly who I bought them off. Sent Ranger a picture, and within a few days I had replacements turn up.
I like the distress markers so well, I have 2 sets, one for my travel kit and one for my desk. I haven't noticed any of them dry, but ever since the small set came out I've been storing the horizontally

Oh no, really? do I dare ask why? I'm loving the few I have and was thinking of getting more. What's been the biggest disappointment for you?
When I watched the demo I thought they would be much different than a regular water based marker (colors don't fade, some solution that kept them vibrant, blah, blah, blah). For me, the colors do dilute with water and Marvy brush markers are much better for coloring on a stamp and misting with water. Also, the colors are not the same as stamp pads. I wasn't expecting an exact color match but they are very different "to me". So I don't use them because with having other markers that work the same or better, it was a waste of $.
When these came out there was a thread that discussed the pros and cons. I think a lot of people like them but I couldn't recommend them when there are other options. Another thing is that in the demo Tim used the Ranger Specialty paper. It's pricey but you get much better results than on regular cardstock. Tim says they work on any paper, and the do, but the Specialty paper works the best.
If you like them, it's wonderful, but sorry to say, I should not have got caught up in the hype.
Oh thought of something else, the tips seem to wear out sooner and the fine tip (like other brands) are all dry. :(

Still I have the Memento markers (they don't react with water though they are water based) and while they aren't advertised as refillable I decided to see if I could remove the brush tip on one of mine that is rather dry...it came out and I was able to refresh it with a few drops of reinker!!!
So all of that to say...try to remove the nib and see if you can get any reinker in the marker.

I think your idea is a good one because if the marker is dry, it's not like you are going ruin it. It's not in most companies best interest to have us refilling markers ;)
The best way to remove the tip is use tweezers and gently pull it out. Another way is to put reinker in a small container and put the brush tip in the refill ink and let it wick into the tip. It takes a lot longer.
Ranger will replace any markers with the wrong color.
Picket Fence (white) works on dark colors, kraft and black. It shows up when dry.
I have a similar (same?) product called Perfect Ink Refresher. I bought it years ago to refresh my SU ink pads. The idea is that there is still plenty of pigment in the ink pad, but not enough medium (?) for it to work. It definitely worked before I ended up getting all of the reinkers.

It's the same, just a name change. For markers you just spray some on a craft mat and scribble your marker through it. I cap mine and wait a bit, try it out on paper, repeat if needed.
That's my recipe. Lindsay gave me a shout out in the video during it. It was so sweet. I have used that recipe for years. I mean like when I was in high school years. This was when MC Hammer was on the radio, lol.
I don't know if it would work to refill DI's. If Tim is saying the DI's are not refillable then Ranger has added something else to it. I almost got caught in the DI craze too. I came close to pre-ordering them. Then I discovered Ranger Nibs. I use those as my Distress Markers. I just dip them in my inks.
I have a whole set of Marvy Le Plume I use my refill concoction on. They have lasted for years. My set is like new. My Le Plume's are probably my most used marker set. I do have a set of SU too but I also have the reinkers. When they dry out I will just refill them with the reinkers.
I'm surprised you can't just drip the reinker (seriously why does my MacBook think it needs to autocorrect 'reinker' to 'reindeer'?) onto the brush end and let it absorb like you can with SU! markers. Maybe it is a different formula and that's why some have mentioned that the colors seem a bit different?
Where does one buy the gum arabic to put in the refresher recipe?

You can buy it at WalMart in the art section of their craft department. It's Winsor & Newton Gum Arabic. Costs about $7.00 a bottle. If your close to any of the big box craft stores Gum Arabic is sold in the art department. You find it with the watercolors. Of course if your really lucky (I am jealous ) and have big art stores in your area they carry it in the watercolor section of their stores.
I want to add a note because there are two different kids of Gum Arabic- Powder and Liquid. You need the liquid for refill. I do use both powder and liquid. I use the powder mainly to make shimmer mists and for some of my art techniques.
I remember seeing a video Tim did a while ago, about how people were saying that the DI pads ans Paints colours were different. He said that ALL the various products had different shades/hues of the colours. so they toned together, they were never intended to be exactly the same as each other.

that is probably true... but, when you are expecting brown and swipe something green it is irritating, and green is one of my favorite colors :rolleyes:
this particular marker is not even close to the pad color
ETA they should make the lids of the markers be the color that the pen will swipe as then there would not be issues, you'd just stick that pen in with your greens and go.

Well the glycerin mixture is basically a mixture that will loosen up any color still in the wick (probably not the right term) of the pen and shouldn't dilute the color.
Personally I'm a recycling sort of person, it was the draw of known refillable markers to me. Even if it did slightly alter the color I would be ok with it.

Making a negative into a positive? TBH sounds like they were up against a deadline and launched as is and then promoted it as intentional.
Those browns aren't even the same color base. One is warm and the other cold.
I like Tim Holtz and the looks achieved, but I find the product line way too complicated.
I have the whole set and find them fabulous for watercoloring. I don't do well painting with just a paint brush because my old-lady eyes just don't see well enough, but I do fine with a marker. If I work on WC paper, I can get color laid in precisely with the brush end of the marker and then move it around with a paint brush.
I guess I never even thought about whether they would exactly match the pads (of which I have almost all). I just like the colors.
Two of mine came dried up and one was leaking. Ranger replaced them right away. Like others have said, excellent customer service.
But I agree - the product line has become overwhelmingly unwieldy. Tim Holtz must have a team of people coming up with nouns to go after the word "Distress".

I too got caught up in the hype when they first came out. However, I've come to really like them for watercoloring. I also scribble them on a white tile and pick up the color to paint with a water brush. Works beautifully.
thanks for linking to me! I had trouble with distress markers going gooey at the brush tip with the green and brown, there would be gobs of ink and I store all of my markers horizontally. If the marker is dry, yet unused you can add water plus glycerin in equal parts to freshen it, the glycerin keeps the marker from pilling the paper. Good luck. I re ink my markers as needed with this method.
I slowly bought the whole collection. Now that I am using them I found that the fine tips just don't work. I purchased all of these for that tip, to use when images don't stamp well.
glycerin is also a wetting agent. when I was working in an electrical porcelain factory, we used glycerin in the ink pads to keep them from drying out.
