VSNMAR14H - Mapping It Out - Saturday, March 8 - 4:00 P. M. EST tessaduck
Challenge Title: Mapping It Out
Hostess: Brenda (Tessaduck)
Keyword: VSNMAR14H
Date: Saturday March 8th, 2014 - 4:00pm
In another lifetime, ages ago, before digital cartography, I was a graduate student in geography. I remember being intellectually challenged with climatology coursework. I had to memorize (and understand!) formulas and learn a whole new jargon, including the visuals - symbols on weather maps - isobars. dry adiabatic rate. Wind speed. Sarcasm alert: Great ice breakers at parties.
Eh. I never made a career in geography (taught lots, though), but Im still fascinated by maps. Must be a paper thing. Of course, weather and climate are current issues, worth a focus.
Lets make a project, using maps or images of maps and/or common weather map symbols.
Hint: The basic symbol for a cold front on a weather map looks very much like a string of triangular pennants, and a warm front can look like scallops.
Feel free to use a stamped image of a map, map elements (e. g., compass rose), or globe on your project. Or forgo the map/climate visuals, and use some of the shapes/symbols/colors you see in basic weather symbols.
I did two quick cards, one using a newspaper clipping from the weather page and the other from a NOAA posting on facebook. The other sample uses the uppercase H and L, for high or low air pressure, in a pattern.
Cant wait to see what you all can do with a map or weather map symbols!
1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 10 P. M. EST ON Saturday, March15th.
2. You have 1 hour to complete the challenge, unless otherwise noted.....you do not have to count prep time!
3. We have a special gallery for the Weather Or Not VSN.
a) From the "Main Gallery" dropdown list on the first page of the uploader, choose Events and Special Collections.
b) From the Sub-gallery dropdown list, choose Virtual Stamping and Scrapbooking Nights ~ it's the last in the list.
c) From the new sub-gallery dropdown list choose Weather Or Not - it's the very top of the list.
4. Please remember to put in the correct keyword VSNMar14G when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
5. Please do not combine VSN challenges...but you may combine any other challenges with a VSN challenge!
It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in this chat thread to be sure your layout is seen. THANKS SO MUCH FOR PLAYING ALONG!!!

wow....this one I'm might have to do later so I can give it some thought ... and dig through my stamps for a map idea ... I think I have one, just gotta find it :o Since I've not used the stamp before, I'm excited to get it inked.
I'll be back .... good thing looking for the stamp time doesn't count, right, LOL!

Brenda, this sounds like so much fun. I know I have at least 4 map stamps (plus a bunch of old maps I brought home when we were sorting through stuff in my dad's house last weekend), so I am putting a big "X marks the spot" on an hour tomorrow afternoon so I can play along. Just got to figure out if I can also work in some weather symbols for a virtual bonus.
Take all the time you want (up to Saturday the 15th, of course), or simply go with pennants, scallops, or color. All used as symbols on weather maps.
I was intrigued by the textures used on the newspaper's weather page to show precipitation. The forward slash character on your keyboard / / / / / / looks like rain. Frequently seen over my part of the map.

This was WORK! I know I could have used these symbols on a normal card, but...........I went the hard way. Here is my WEATHER card! Thanks Brenda for the great challenge ad for all you do for us.
Here's some ideas. Do you see the stamp image with the triangles? or the scallop dies? Either would work, representing cold or warm fronts on a weather map. Your card doesn't necessarily need to have a map on it, to meet the challenge. Maybe something that resembles one of the symbols or colors on a weather map.

I got way behind on the challenges and will have to work on this one later. Great idea for a challenge. I also have some maps-old Atlas. I will sleep on this one. Thanks for the challenge.

I managed to make a card for this challenge. I think this will be the last one I make for VSN. Time is just about up and little people are getting hungry!
