Gina K base weight white paper, Help

I am finally making a card that has a white base. I used my stampin up score board to crease it and it turned out terrible. I then folded one by hand and it was worse. How do you fold it so the crease doesn't get all cracky?

which direction are you folding the card? I flip mine over after scoring it so that the "groove" is face down, then fold it. I get better results doing it that way.

I've done it both ways & had cracking each way. It's an intermittent thing for me, I'd say cracking happens ~ 10% or so of the time.

For thicker heavier cardstock, I usually score it twice just to stretch the fibres so it won't crack. You can try running a damp q-tip on the score line to help the fibres stretch too. And making sure the "valley" from the scoring is to the outside when you fold it and the "bump" ends up inside.

Just as an FYI, paper/cardstock has a grain. It folds and tears more evenly with the grain than against the grain. If you're making A2 cards (1/2 sheet of 8.5 x 11), you could try making your cards so that they fold in the other direction. Other than that, I'm no help at all. : It's not like the manufacturer tells you which way the grain runs.

I use the Score Pal and use Gina K Heavy base weight all the time. I always score 4 or 5 times. and fold as stated earlier and don't have a problem.

I too had the cracking problem, Stampinmom, but not always. It's such beautiful cardstock when it works. The weather seems to influence whether or not it cracks. You can "repair" the cracking by putting Multi-medium Matte on your finger and running it along the cracked edge. I got that at ellenhutson.com. It's a Ranger gel that dries clear. Someone on this Forum recommended it when I complained about the cracking.

I use my scor pal and score her cs at least 3-4 times. Any less and it can crack.

I only have the cracking problem on rare occasions, but I never heard of scoring multiple times to eliminate the issue - thanks so much for the tip guys!

I use Gina K. And honestly I have never had this problem. Weird that I have never experienced it?

Thank you for the suggestions. The last time I used it, it cracked too, so I just used it for a layer. I had scored it many times and folded it so the valley was on the outside.
I will definitely try some of the ideas.

Are you all using the small or large end of the embossing tool?

Yes, I was shocked when I first tried to score the paper. I emailed them and they told me to score it multiple times and that worked. I don't have the cracking.

Hi guys,
Yep, score it 3-4 times to really get that deep grove in there. Then, fold it and use the score tool to flatten it out. I will do a video on it. It's so thick and very smooth which, if not scored enough, it will crack. But it totally won't if you use this method.

Yay! I was having this problem as well but I'm really gentle when I score. I try not to "hurt" my cardstock. LOL. I'll try multiple scores and if that doesn't help, I'll wait for the video.

I tried again and scored 5-6 times. I still have some cracking but not as bad. I am making cards that I am selling to a retail store in town and the need to be perfect. I like the heavy base but I cant have the cracking. I am so bummed.

Sherri - try spritzing just a bit of water or alcohol along the score line before you fold and give it a minute or two to soak in. That should make the cardstock a little more pliable and help the fibers to bend instead of break.

I haven't had the problem with cracking, and I suspect it's because my crafting cave is in the basement and it's a little more humid down there. I do remember someone else posting with the same cracking problem, and she lived in Arizona, so, d-r-y.

I did everything Gina said to do with the exceptions of using the tool that came with my stampin up score board. My tool is different than hers. I will have to purchase one like that and try it again. Thank you for the video.

Putting a little alcohol where you are going to sore and letting it sit for a minute really helps me. Thank you cat_woman and cbet for the suggestion.

I followed the video instructions exactly and my crease is still cracked. :mad: Very frustrating. I really love the weight of this paper, but I think I'm going to give up on it and stick to Gina K's lighter weights. I did use Martha Stewarts score board and am wondering if that could be the difference? Perhaps the grooves are more narrow than the Scor pal?

Same for me.

I tried the MS, SU, just my paper trimmer blade with stylus and a bone folder and misting and still had some cracks. I did find that if I folded the paper the opposite of the video there was less cracks but that is the opposite of what I normally do.

I'm also going to stick with a lighter weight like SU Shimmery White or Cryogen White for when I need a heavier card base.

I use the heavy base weight all the time and it never cracks on me. I have a Scor Pal and I dig into the "slot" and fold like Gina. I love it.
