MIX49 - Happy Little Clouds (1/3/2014)

Hello, Happy New Year and welcome to another Mix-Ability challenge here on Splitcoast! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!

If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal, instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!

Today's challenge is inspired by an artist who had a lot of influence on my artistic bent - Bob Ross.

While sometimes parodied, his desire was to make art something that could fit into everyone's life - not something reserved for a select few. His kindness and sweetness was evident in every one of his shows, and he always made me feel like the most important thing in art was to enjoy oneself, and I have always treasured and honored that.

No one can even say "Happy Little Clouds" without thinking of sweet Bob Ross. I took a painting class using his method at CHA one year and it was without a doubt the best painting I've ever done.



So today's challenge is for you to make happy little clouds on your card, and to use a very simple technique by our own Mix-Ability hostess, Jeanne Streiff, for quick, fingerpainted clouds.



Normally I do these with acrylic paint - I use white and black paint so that my clouds have a little grey at the bottom.

But today, in honor of Bob Ross, I used Bob Ross gesso instead - it works great if you only have gesso and not paint - you just need to add a few layers as it has more transparency than acrylic paint.

Now since it's a MIXED MEDIA challenge, you have to use one additional medium - I chose watercolor - I spritzed my background with water, dropped reinkers onto it and then smushed them around with a paper towel.

Most importantly, as Bob would say - have FUN - as it says on my card - life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful!!

Wow, what a beautiful painting, Lydia - it reminds me of Greece with all those blues and the sand and tall trees.
Visiting relatives today so I might not get a card made before we leave, but I'll certainly be planning for tomorrow!

I remember when there was a HUGE demand here for black gesso all because of Bob Ross, and nobody over here stocked it. The guy who popularised art on TV over here was Frank Clarke, and his mnemonic was Have Some More Fun - Horizon, sky, middle, foreground. (I think - I'm only sure of the Have Some More Fun, LOL).

Lydia, first off THANK YOU for sharing that Bob Ross video. I will be humming that little tune all day and feelin' good! hehe Your painting is amazing. I could just stare at that and let my mind wander for hours. This is a wonderful fun challenge for today. I hope I can play. :0)
