Canned pumpkin by itself tastes pretty gross. It is simply cooked, pureed pumpkin. We also have canned pumpkin pie filling which already has the sugar and spices added to it so when you go to use it for pie you just add the milk and eggs....that's a lot more edible on its own! I've also cooked, pureed and frozen my own pumpkin, but it is more watery than what comes in the cans and takes a little adjusting with recipes. My mom grew up in a small town in IL that had a Libbys pumpkin processing plant so they have an annual pumpkin festival and my relatives from there have lots of pumpkin recipes!
It is interesting how regional tastes develop....some things are more adoptable to other cultures than others. Whenever I tell people about the full Irish breakfast that I ate at the B&B we stayed in, they balk at the blood pudding. I'm at least willing to try new things, but I don't end up liking them all. I actually found the pudding to be pretty tasty and I'm not a sausage eater in general.
