Default Embossing Folder and Die Holder Prototypes - What do you think?

The response to our poll last weekend about embossing folders and wafer dies was AMAZING! A huge thank you to all who participated. Your feedback is helping us shape our next new product! We've got a strong engineering background here at Stamp-n-Storage and so we LOVE data. Here are some highlights:
  • 25% responded "Yes" to the question "Do you consider your embossing folders/wafer dies to be well organized?" (which means 75% of you want some help here!)
  • Over half of you are storing your folders and dies in a tote or box
  • Two thirds of you have five or fewer categories for your folders and dies
  • The two charts below summarize how many folders and dies people have!

87% of people who responded have 70 or fewer folders
40% have 40 or fewer folders

77% of people who responded have 70 or fewer dies
38% have 40 or fewer folders

Whew - that's probably more charts than you've seen in a Splitcoaststampers post in a LONG time! Now on to the fun stuff.

With all the data in hand, we set out to create a product that would be perfect for these items and the way you use them. One of the things we're passionate about at Stamp-n-Storage is making sure you make the most use of your available space AND your tools and supplies are fun and easy to use.

This is what we've come up with!

Shown here are about 40 Cuttlebug and Stampin' Up! embossing folders.

Shown here are about 25 Sizzix and Stampin' Up! wafer die envelopes.

A few key features:
- The front and back are angled so that the folders and envelopes lay nicely while you're flipping through them
- We will offer them in a few different sizes so you can choose the right one for your collection

What do you think????

Are the totes wide enough on the inside for your folders and envelopes?

We'd love to get your feedback, especially on the size of the items you'll be storing. Voice your opinion below in the comments!

Those are perfect sizes for Sizzix and Stampin Up! But what about those of us who have more variety? Like 5 x 7 Spellbinders M-Bossibilities for example.

I think this is great. I have been searching all over for a better way to store the folders and die envelopes and haven't been pleased with anything I've tried. These look good, as long as those little plastic envelopes fit in the holder no matter what their size, I'm good with it.

Yes, yes, yes! Love these bins! I'll order them, for sure. Fun to see the data so when hubby comments on my collection I can tell him I need MORE to catch up with some of you!

I would love something for my folders but not on my desk as it is way too cluttered now and with it opened I worry about the dust as it settles...any other options?

Maus - That's exactly the feedback we're looking for! What are the exact outer dimensions of your 5 x 7 Spellbinders M-Bossibilities?

Kim T - I'm sure you thought of this, but it would also fit in a drawer. Is that a possibility in your work area?

These have good points I.e slanted ends, but a lot of desktop space or shelf is needed. I think most crafters have limited space for open containers. Estamps

I'm starting to develop feelings for you, embossing folder holder. It's wrong, I know. I can't even feel for my husband what I feel for you. Sigh.

Btw...what keeps the folders from falling over if you only have a few folders in it? Is there some piece you can put in it to stop them from falling over? I might have missed it. But you can trust they're on my list!!

What about some grooves inside the base at the bottom, so that the folders/envelopes rest in them? Not too deep mind you.

Perfect solution! I have mine in shoeboxes, but these would be so much more attractive on my desk as I know I can paint/finish them to match my stamp pad storage from you! What are you thinking for cost?

I love these containers, the slanted ends are perfect. In case Maus does not reply, my 5 x 7 folders are 5 1/4 inch wide. I also have an SU letterpress that is 5 7/8 inch wide, some SU Bigz dies that are 5 1/2 inch wide and several Spellbinders Nestabilities that are in packages that are 5 1/8 inch wide. Mine are currently in boxes on my desk so I would welcome your boxes on my desk too.

I love the sleek look of this, and I love the idea of flipping through. I have a similar system now with a straight edge box, but it's not a perfect fit and I can see where the slanted end helps ease the flip-ability.

Looks nice but I too would love to have a cover and some kind of dividers. I'm accumulating so many folders that I like to divide mine some way so that I can find them more quickly. And there is always paper dust flying around (as well as a few bugs cause I'm in the basement) so it would be nice to keep them covered. Any idea of the cost?

Love that you are always coming up with new products to meet the storage demands of new products.

This would be perfect for me! I don't mind the open top and I only have 20 or so folders, the narrow one looks like it would hold all of them plus some.

I am not sure about storing the dies in their folders. Those folders are plastic and only short term protection and the backing is paper so it is not meant for storage. I would rather see magnetic strips that fit upright in to slots.
The bins will probably work for embossing folders but think there should be slots so they don't slip and fall over.

Default embossing folder storage

I like the ones you have designed, but I am with the person who asked about the 5 x 7 and 8 x 8 folders. Any plan for those?

I love this idea for both embossing folders and dies. But I would not store mine on my desk as I already have too much on it. I would store them in a cubby. I have the Ikea Expedit bookcase. It would probably be nice to have some bins longer in length because I have lots of folders and dies.

Most of my dies don't come in envelopes either so I wouldn't buy the die one. Unless it came with envelopes that fit the box perfectly so I could organize my dies. THAT sounds like something i NEED!

And although I like the angled ends, it looks like the angle is a bit too much. It just needs to be enough to see the top of the folder when the box is jammed full. Too much angle equals wasted space on a shelf or desk. The folder should be recognizable from seeing the top 1/3-1/2 or so which means the angle could be cut down somewhat.

I love that you are getting feedback here! What an awesome idea. So many companies don't do their research and end up with unhappy customers. Lifestyle crafts only took into account the opening of the new Cuttlebug which is a few mm wider than the old one so their new genius platform doesn't fit the older 'Bugs. Even though the box says it fits C'Bugs, no mention if version. Leading people to buy them and then get very cranky when their purchase is useless! I think the GENIUS platform is inappropriately named and was definitely not created but someone deserving that title. Kudos to you for being clever enough to avoid that problem. It's very humble to acknowledge you might not foresee every use or spec and ask for input!

Default prototype for embossing folders

The angled ends mean less storage space inside and takes up more room on the outside wherever they are stored. I would also want a cover to keep out dust or to be able to stack them if needed to utilize space better.

I would really be interested in an option with a lid so they could be stacked. And I agree that maybe they do not need so much angle on the box. Better yet maybe only angled enough on the front to be able to see the top 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the top of the folder or envelope to see the name or a label strip. Just some more ideas. I really like your products and wish I could afford more. I really, really need a couple of punch holders. Oh, that's an idea, I can put them on my Christmas list. Last year my daughter gave me the largest ribbon holder. Love it!
Thanks for listening, Debbie

What would happen if instead of the box as it is shown, if you could stand the box upright and be able to slide dividers where they are needed. Would that solve the space needed issue.

Currently my embossing folders are stored in two $1.66 boxes from Michael's, organized with similar designs together, the box has a lid which is underneath the box because I got tired of lifting the lid!

I keep the boxes right beside the 2 Cuttlebugs that are on a 4 ft table along with the Spellbinders dies!

I have the old metal tins of GKD stamps in a decorator type box from long ago with an attached lid that constantly falls shut and I get frustrated because the lid doesn't detach so that flipping the lid to get to the items inside is a 2 hand process...

I like your box very well, I think you have put thought into the design and the angled box would be nice for holding the folders tighter than what my current box does with extra space.

Flipping through the designs is quick and easy with them in categories so I would make myself chipboard dividers if I purchased your box!

Love the idea. I, too, would like to be able to have a lid for storage. I am remodeling my craft room and am looking for all kinds of storage ideas. Is there any way to make them vertical rather than horizontal so the folders could slide in and out more easily? Maybe along the same concept as the ink pad holder.

Love these... Great to flip through for my dies that I like to leave in the packaging...I think while you are at it other sizes of these bins size for clear stamp sets would also be great for flip through storage...maybe lids would be good for an optional purchase since they may not work for everyone....great ideas so far!

I love both of the storage box ideas, but thing for me the squared off end would be the best. It would fit into my cabinet and I would use a drawer pull hardware to pull it out. So, build, build, build! Just let me know so I can start counting my "stuff" and figure out what I need.
Thank you,

I think they would be excellent - but dividers would be great for the embossing folders. Put lids on them or make them stackable drawer-type items.

The die-cuts drawer would be great, but put "dividers" in. If magnetic sheets were available to put dies on them that do not have the little folders with them would be amazing!

To accomodate the folks who wish for a squared version (with no slanted front or less of a slant) you could consider making that front part hinged so that it could be stored all squared up, and then when searching through it, pull on a front handle that allows the hinged portion to move forward into an angled position and then we can search through the box. (I'm saying hinged... but I mean a moving mechanism, like the spout on a morton's salt container that closes flat, but when you pull on it, it opens up at an angle like a spout.)

YES! I would love a box that came with cool envelopes or inserts like this as most of my dies are in little plastic zip bags of all different sizes. I would be great to have a small, medium, and large version of a die box, too.

I like the slanted containers so that the embossing folders lay nicely for flipping through them. However, I too have limited desk/table space. Also, living in rural Reno, we get lots of dust/dirt despite double paned windows. Is there another thought to minimize dust collection besides putting the folders in a drawer? Also consider stackable containers. I would add my own tabs to sort out the many (more than 70) folders. I also have A2, 5x7s, and some even oversized 5x7 folders from other makers. I have folders/dies from Stampin' Up!, Sizzix, Provo Craft - Cuttlebug ( USA and European editions), Couture Creations, Cart Us, Creative Expressions, Craft Concepts and Spellbinders.

I have the Sizzx boxes for mine that SU sells... I set them on top of the lids that come with them as I do NOT like to not be able to "shop" through my stuff, thus I have storage panels holding my stamps!!! Flip Flip Flip!

Thank you all for your comments and feedback! First, we'll answer a couple of questions:

When will they be available? In 2-3 weeks. We'll let you know here as well as in our email newsletter.
How much will they cost? We'll be able to confirm this when the design is complete.

There are several common themes in the feedback:
- A cover is important (see additional note below)
- Make sure they're big enough (but not too big!)
- Dividers would be helpful
- Mixed feelings about the slanted ends

We will take all of this feedback into account as we prepare the final design!

Regarding covers, be aware that this will have a significant impact on cost. Consider that the cover is like a second tote that's placed on top and attached with a hinge. Therefore adding a cover requires more than twice as much effort as building the prototypes shown. With that in mind, we will likely be offering these in two versions: With and without covers.

We'll likely also offer dividers with the totes. All this will be figured out soon. Stay tuned!
