Ribbon - spools or cards

I'm in the process of going through my craft room and reorganizing. I currently have all my SU retired ribbon on a rack on the wall with dowels. It's nice to see what I have but a major pain when I need a color (3 rolls will unravel at the same time). Then my current ribbon is in the SU ribbon holders on my shelf (again, a pain to get out a single roll). All other brands are just tossed in drawers or baskets on my shelf.

Have you found its better to keep them on the rolls or take them off and wrap onto cardboard and store in drawers? I love the way it looks all wrapped and neat, but if they are out if sight, I may tend to not use them. Anyone have an opinion on which is better for you?

I don't have my ribbon on spools or cards. I wrap the end around a pencil, then just keep rolling until it's all wound into a coil. I use the clear "ouchless" hairbands to hold it together. However - the SU! ribbon spools have too many yards on them to do this unless you cut the ribbon when the coil starts getting too big, and I don't know if that's a deal-breaker for you. It does save a ton of space - I have A LOT of ribbon, and I have it sorted ROYGBIV in the smallest size of Sterilite 3-drawer units. I took this picture of the "green" drawer before I switched to the rubber bands (that's why you can see tape), but it will give you a visual:

If you want to leave your ribbon as is, you can solve the problem of the spools on either side of the spool you actually want to use unwinding by putting "spacers" between the spools. Cut a circle of plastic and slip it between the spools - it should work (you may need two, but try one first)

I have current SU ribbon on their spools. Almost all other ribbons are on cards. They are all in drawers by color and are all easy to see when the drawer is pulled out. Wrapping the cards is/was time consuming, but very space saving and I can see what I have. I do have a few large spools (most are/were 100 yards) which have their own drawer and one 1500 yard spool which sits on top a cabinet (I have used quite a bit of that one, but the spool is huge!)

Same for me.

I've tried several different types of ribbon storage and this method is the least expensive, keeps the ribbon clean, and least amount of hassle. I tried the method of little boxes with ribbon rolled inside and it was a nightmare. The ribbon would fall out and then I'd have to reroll it all.

Some while ago, I saw on a post on here about a lady called Amazing Paper Grace, and her ribbon storage, using posterboard., Here is my post for how I copied it.

By the way, I used elastic bands around to hold on the ribbon, and if I had a few strands of the same thickness/colour, I held them down with low-tack tape, just leaving one to be held by an elastic band. And I do use it more, not less, as there's no stressy trying to find the right colour/width!

I wrapped mine around the cardboard coasters that I purchased a really large sum of. I then placed them in plastic totes by color the same as in the previous post. I cut a small slit in the coaster and after wrapping the ribbon I just pull the end through the cut and voila they don't unravel at all and I can see what I have and chose what I want for any particular card I am making. I had gotten this idea a long time ago on SCS. when I first did this it was because I had little storage around my craft room and now that I have a studio I can spread out and these totes sit on a shelf in my closet. This worked the best for me.

I have mine ribbon all rolled so they don't get the fold on a card. I have tiny pins to hold them all on the rolls.

My SU ribbon is on spools and tucked in baskets all lined up. The baskets fit on a shoe shelf that I have tucked on my cube shelf in my work area. Smaller lengths of ribbon are on cards in a Tim Hotz tin suitcase organizer.

For the more smaller and sort of random, i keep some of mine in tubs. A tub for each major color. Usually these are shorter than a yard. As they got fuller, i've started wrapping some of the longer ones around my finger and then put a paper clip in it, and then back in the tub. Made it so much easier to see what i have

My SU ribbon is on the rolls in a drawer in my card catalog. If I have matching ribbon for a color, I have a + next to the color name on the paper rack. I have a lot of ribbon that I have purchased in scrapbook stores and I use the ribbon ring system for that. They are sorted by color and hang on the side of my card catalog. I know this sounds confusing. You can see it better in my gallery (single pics, not the album of my studio which is the previous redo :( )

I was lucky enough that a friend had a cutting file for the ribbon ring tabs and she cut me a couple of hundred of them. I put lengths up to 1.5m onto them, and you can put a few different ribbons on each tab depending on their width.

My husband put up a gutter on my wall and I have all my ribbons placed in it. When I need a ribbon I just take out the spool, use it and place it back in the gutter. I have them sorted by colors and it makes a colorful background for my stamping area. You can buy the gutters (mine are white) at any home improvement center.

I have all my ribbon in small Ziploc-style bags. I group them by colour in the clamshell boxes I got with my TE monthly kits.
They fit on a shelf, beside my binders of stamps.

Mine are left on the rolls (so the ribbon doesn't get fold marks) in gutters mounted on the wall as well. I have 3 gutters (white), each about 39" long, mounted in 3 rows, one above the other, etc. Unrolled ribbon is in baskets by color or type. I love the gutters ~ easy and pretty to see all the ribbon.

I actully found a "ribbon spooler" tool online, and you attach one end of the ribbon in a slot, and then the handle turns and winds the ribbon to a fairly neat roll, without a paper core in the middle of the roll. You may have to help it along for complete neatness, but it is pretty cool. You can also get what I call "roll holders" that will store the rolls, and allow ribbon to be rolled forward and cut without opening the holder. I have had for some colors made two rolls of the same ribbon, or they won't fit in the roll holder. Hope this helps!

I leave my SU and other ribbons that I have more yardage of on the rolls. I have a storage unit with no dowels so it is easy to get one out when I need it. For the odds and ends, I have them wrapped on wooden clothes pins and in big glass cookie jars on a shelf.

I used to keep mine in a plastic drawer on a shelf in the closet, but I soon out grew it. Now I put the rolls in plastic guttering cut to fit and hung on the back of the door to my craft room. (See picture below.) Easy to see and grab a single one when needed.

My husband just made this shelf for me from plans someone posted on Pinterest. I can't take credit for the idea, but when I saw it, I knew I had to have it!! We hung it on the wall behind my room door, as that was the only possible space left for my stamping supplies.

Personally, I do not have a craft room and I have to use the dinning table and the coat closet. SO...I had to convert to the "ribbon rings" For the longer SU ribbons I do have to cut them into 1/4 and I hand all 4 "strands" on the same ring. So...I cut all my rolls into 2 1/2 yard lengths so that ALL my ribbons are appropriately the same length. I have all my SU sorted on rings by color family. My PTI ribbon is on rings sorted by ROYGBIV color. My mis. ribbon is on another sorted by ROYGBIV.

Each of the 3 main group (listed above) have their own "scarf holder" that holds all the rings.

I use the photo boxes that you can buy at the hobby stores. Then I take the cardboard core from the toilet paper and fold it flat. Then I wrap my ribbon around the cardboard and use a paperclip on the end. I can get two rows (vertically) in the box and the ribbon is filed by color. i can get about 60 colors in one box. (depending on the size of roll) The boxes stack nicely on my bookcase. Each box is labeled with what colors are in the box.

I use spools if I have a lot of the ribbon and I use 'cards' when I have a few yards or less. I mainly store the spools in a closet on the hangers where you can hang multiple pairs of pants but I have some spools in the plastic stampin up ribbon dispensers. As for the cards, they're not really cards - they're plastic bobbins with plastic pins made especially for ribbon storage and I store these in glass canisters by color. HTH.
