The first holiday season my husband and I were together (dating) I decided to go shopping on black Friday - only my second time ever. His two young sons, five and nine at the time, wanted to go with me and were SO excited. I picked them up at 6:00 a.m. and headed out. We had fun and the best part is we were finished by noon and met (now) hubby for lunch. The kids thought it (and I) was the coolest thing to get up and shop that early. It is exciting but HAVE A PLAN! Makes it much less frustrating if you know where you're going and what you want ahead of time. Have fun!

You could probably give me some good tips. I'm not a vegetarian, but must eat almost like I am. My problem is getting enough protein and iron. Because of heart, diabetes, gout and kidney issues, I am restricted from eating a lot of foods. Re: the gout, I'm not supposed to have pork or beef, but very little other meat either. I'm only supposed to eat beans in moderation. Because of the heart issues and meds, I have to go easy on the green veggies. I feel like the only thing I'm allowed to eat is ... condiments. I can eat dairy products and eggs (2-3 per week), and that's been my protein recently.

Val...turkey sausage is really good in dressing...esp. if you only eat a little at a time so as not to get to many carbs and cause elevated sugars....I mix corn bread and white bread so lowers the carb count a smidge. and darn, if I'd known earlier, I coulda planned a road trip straight down I-35 and we could eat and stamp and visit....maybe next yr....would be fun....

I'm not a vegetarian. I quit putting turkey in my dressing because it made it seem a little dry. MMMmmm, luv me some dressing and egg gravy!

Sheri, I thought about adding ground turkey or chicken. Didn't think of turkey sausage, but that sounds even better. Being a Yankee at heart I don't use cornbread in mine. And I find it awfully hard to eat only a little at a time. I do have my glucose numbers pretty well under control now. I was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago, so I have sort of trained myself to make wiser food choices ... most of the time

Maybe you can come to the stamping retreat in Salado that Lydia talked about. That's about half way between her and I. I'm sure there are others who could get there too. It's just the beginning of a plan. I hope we'll talk about it more after the holidays.

I do plan to make some dressing just for myself as that is the best part of Thanksgiving dinner imho. This year I can't put pork sausage in it though (because of the gout) so I'm not too sure how it will turn out. I'll be using veggie broth rather than chicken broth for moistening. I'm planning on adding A LOT of herbs.
I read somewhere that mushrooms, probably portobellas, and I think soy sauce, are good for adding flavor when you go veggie on thing life stuffing.

yeah, that's the real meaning but most people don't pay attention to that. Just like some people call it tomato sauce and some call it gravy. I just use whatever word pops into my head first.

No self respecting gravy is made from TOMATO sauce. You know what I call tomato sauce? KETCHUP. (Okay, no, really, I call tomato sauce.... tomato sauce. I have never heard of tomato sauce gravy. Is it a regional thing? What do you put tomato sauce gravy on?)

You put it on pasta, cook meatballs, sausage, pork chops, all manner of meats in it. My big extended Italian family called tomato sauce gravy. So did all my Italian friends. I grew up in NJ, don't know if that's a regional thing.

Yep, and all pasta was "macaronis" at least at the household of the Italian lady I roomed with in upstate New York when I was finishing college. Whatever meat we'd eaten that week went in from pork to chicken. About once a quarter she made a huge batch of meatballs that often included ground venison and some of those went in as well. Her kids and grandkids came over every Sunday for lunch and she made a salad, pasta with sauce and the meat as well as some sort of cake she'd baked for the occasion. After lunch, she froze the leftover sauce and then thawed it and added stuff the next Sunday. We've been doing the same for years now (minus the whatever meat but adding Italian Sausage). We call it Pat's Perpetual Pasta because my DH puts it together and into the crock for us! Nothing better than coming home from church to the smell of sauce and bread in the bread machine! All I have to do is toss the salad and boil the noodles...SWEET!

I thought of mushrooms, but they are a no-no on the gout restriction list. Soy sauce is a good idea though.

you are right...chopped portabellas have a meaty texture...really good...I don't use soy since I don't like salt but add extra herbs and such

I only wish I didn't like salt. I've made a lot of adjustments in the past 12 years, but have never learned to like unsalted food. I do try to keep it to a minimum, but I really like salty food - more than desserts.

That's ok Emily, you're so Sweet! Thanks though. The prizes are fun & exciting to win but I basically did this for my friend even if I don't win anything. It's funny my co-workers think I'm crazy because I'm looking forward to next October to make at least 100 cards.

I'm only supposed to eat beans in moderation. Because of the heart issues and meds, I have to go easy on the green veggies. I feel like the only thing I'm allowed to eat is ... condiments. I can eat dairy products and eggs (2-3 per week), and that's been my protein recently.
Val, that must be hard for you all around. I had a hard enough time trying to eat right while I was pregnant, I had to eat on a diabetic diet & only gained 8 pounds. I seen a nutritionist every week & check my insulin...that was not fun.
Hugs to you!

1) Mongolian Beef at PF Changs (it is the most delectable thing in the WORLD!),
2) Five Guys burgers (my favorite), and this is going to sound conceited but
3) my beef stew - I LOVE my beef stew, LOL!

I do not eat pork (piggies are too cute), veal, or lamb under any circumstances. I can't eat baby animals! Trying to eat less meat in general...

How about shrimp? I love the mongolian beef at PF Changs but I also love the shrimp with candied walnuts... both delicious but verrrrrrry different.

Hm. Maybe regional, maybe Italian... cuz yeah, I would just call that tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce (tomato sauce is plainer to me, spaghetti sauce usually has the herbs and seasoning). Closest I have come to seeing anything with tomato "gravy" is sometimes people will make a meatloaf that way... but I prefer my meatloaf with the best topping of all: bacon.
