I told the kids it was my allergies that kept us from having a dog (the fact that I didn't throw DH under the bus has never fully been appreciated). One day we were at a party and they had a big, brown love of a labrador. I was admiring him and my husband --- out of the BLUE -- said "if you want to get a dog, go ahead.".
I made him repeat it in front of witnesses LOL!
We brought our first Westie puppy home within two weeks. The kids and I were in heaven!
Four weeks later, my brother - who was my only sibling, passed away. I swear, on many subsequent mornings, the only reason I got out of bed was to care for that puppy. She truly helped me heal.

God works in strange ways, eh?
I totally agree, God does work in strange ways. We had a wonderful Golden Retreiver , Holly for 14 years and our daughters were so in love with that dog. Daughters were 23 and 21 and Holly died. We were all very upset by her death. We had to tell our daughters over the phone because they were both away from home at college at the time. But that phone call on September 19th of 2000 would soften the blow of the phone call we had to make to them the next day to tell them that their Grandmother ( my mother) had died. I really feel like it was God's way of softening the loss of my mother; to take the dog first or maybe just His way of giving us one less thing to worry about when we had to make quick arrangements for a trip to Utah.
We have not been able to bring ourselves to get another dog yet.

Holding my breath to see what the Thriller cat prize is. Not that I will be disappointed with anything! But let's just say I've been staring at some stamps from one of our sponsors.

I'm sorry to hear that Pat. Hugs to you.

I've lost my 2 Great Pyrenees 1 year after the other..they were both 8yrs old & they died of bone cancer. We didn't get Ellie until about 2yrs later, it was 1 of the hardest things I had to go through. My DH said I was a vegetable after my 2nd dog died, then the following month I had a miscarriage...that was tough for me.

Oh Pat, I'm sure you are right - God's hand was there for sure.

I so dread being without a dog (someday way far away, I hope), that I talked DH into letting me get a second Westie. So now I have one who is 9 and another that is 4.
I adore them... and I get the feeling there are a few people here who get that

Oh I picked based on the number of the top uploaders for the last ones - I took the number of cards they uploaded and drew the people whose random numbers matched that!
The magic drawing machine is made of awesome.

Oh Connie - how awful! That was a lot of loss all at once! I'm glad you have Ellie now.

I used to transport Pyrs for a rescue group -- That is a LOT of white dog LOL! Especially if you are used to Westies. One trip, I had to Pyrs and a Westie in the my small SUV. And which dog was the most badly behaved? The 20 lb Westie!!!

Thanks Paula. The hardest part is that I don't have any family here but my DH & friends were there for me. My mom came up from San Diego to stay with me for a month so that was Special to me.

I'm so, so sorry My sister had two great Pyrs and last year one died of bone cancer as well. They are beautiful, sweet animals. I loved the one that passed away so much - even though I'm allergic I loved snuggling her. I miss her still.

I'm glad you have a new furbaby - it's the only thing that helps.

Thanks Vicki. Prys are great dogs, in fact I wouldn't mind getting another one. I had Jake at 145 lbs & Nikki at 125 lbs, Jake didn't like other men nor other animals but Nikki, she loved people & loved kitties. I'm not sure what a Westie is.

That's a lot of loss to handle so close together. I have had two years where I had 2 miscarriages in the space of a year and I'm still not sure how I managed to come through all of it. Nothing but the grace of God and my awesome DH could have kept me going, and caring for my kids going through the same loss along with us the 2nd time.

My DH and I have both said we will get another dog when we are sure that the dog can outlive us. But rteally we are just waiting till we retire so that we will be at home with the dog and not have to leave it or them at home all day while we work. So that day may be getting closer, as we hope to retire in a couple of years. I love westies too and I sort of want a smaller dog when we do get one.

yes ma'am

we have two labs for just such reason, because the one we had before these guys didnt make it to 3 because of stinkin' cancer... and now the oldest ( he will be 6 next week) just may have a bone marrow cancer. they dont know for certain because, of all the testing / treatments we've already subjected him to we are just doing pills and praying and hanging in there. the worst part is he is such a wonderful dog.

I'm glad you have a new furbaby - it's the only thing that helps.
Thank you Lydia. Sorry to hear about your sister's dog. It's heartbreaking, I still miss them, it's been 8 yrs now. Ellie is a good dog, she's part hound & german short hair but looks & stands like a hound. Sometimes she thinks she can bark, but she howls.

Oh Connie,
That had to be horrible. Miscarriages leave you so empty feeling and to have that right after your dog's death - wow!

Westies are West Highland Terriers -- here's a pic of my two. They are often used in advertising -- like Cesar dog food uses a Westie..
