I'm a freaky couponer and our store has what's called Just For U pricing. it tracks what you buy and you get lower prices every month or so on things you buy. Like today I got boneless skinless chicken breasts $1.88/lb. That price is good thru the end of the month I think. doubled up cereal sales (1.99 check) with coupons $1 off two.

In general tho I don't buy anything that is prepackaged or single serve or anything. Heck my kids think juice is a treat too LOL

I didn't manage to spend enough in September to get money back vouchers, so it was a great surprise to get 4 X €20 vouchers, one for each week in November, on a spend of over €100. I'll never use them all, but I had no problem yesterday making sure my shopping added up to just a tad over €100. But that's quite some amazing saving.
I hate the way the shops get so busy from now on in, too...

My dd and I are going to look at a college that is 10 minutes away - I am keeping my fingers crossed that a. We can afford the tuition and b. she loves it and wants to go there!

One of my friends is driving 7.5 hours to pick up her son for Thanksgiving .. just sounds like a big, fat drag to me.

It is the MOST beautiful morning in upstate NY. Bluest sky, still lots of gorgeous leaves on the trees, crisp air -- love it! I am just back from taking my dd to choir practice, then went to drop off a turkey at the food pantry and a great trip to the farmer's market. Rochester has a really large farm market - we call it The Public Market -- you can buy anything from sweaters & sunglasses to live chickens to any veg/fruit. So much fun!!

I'm addicted to chicken breast on sale! When I get it for $1.49 or $1.69/lb, I can't stop, lol, I'll have 10 packs in the freezer. I'm down to my last 2.

I can't buy prepackaged anything, hubby has a heart problem and can't have the salt.

Envious of Vickie's weather - it was a dismally grey gloomy day here, though it didn't rain.
I have brownies in the oven for a pick-me-up treat, and a spicy lamb tagine simmering for tomorrow's dinner and the freezer.

I think I remember when your daughter went, Gail, I'm sure I remember seeing something you'd made as a gift for her to bring with her. I bet you'll be glad to have her home again! Just in time for Thanksgiving, too.

Good morning all
Sounds like there are some exciting weeks to be had out there for you all. No work for me today...at least not at Target. Still house, bills, yard, laundry, prep for the week.

I'm blessed that normally she is at a college only 1/2 hour from home. Her major is Intercultural Studies and she had an intercultural internship requirement. She has been in Ulaan Baatar, which is the capital city, since August so we are very grateful that she will be heading home soon! She ended up teaching English at a Mongolian school and also some English classes in the evenings at a Coffee shop associated with the mission she was serving with. She also had course work to keep up with from her college classes so she has been a very busy young lady! She has had a bit of a cold for the past week, but is feeling much better...still stuffed up so I'm thinking her 26 hours of travel time aren't going to be much fun!

I saved this recipe and just got around to making it tonight. It is delicious! I actually stopped after the chicken was cooked and haven't added the cream cheese or soup. (I wouldn't use the cream cheese anyway - yuck!)

It would make a wonderful casserole for company though if I mixed it with rice and soup and maybe some veggies. I might make it that way the next time we have a pot luck at church. I was so surprised at how moist the chicken was since we didn't add any liquid other than the butter. There was a lot of fat left in the bottom of the crock pot, most of which I think I would drain before adding rice, etc.

It took just about 4 hours to cook to 180. Perfect!

Thanks for posting the recipe.

Italian Crock Pot Chicken

1 to 1.5 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 tbsp. butter, melted
1 envelope Italian dressing mix
1 8-oz. package cream cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup

Put chicken in bottom of crock pot. Pour melted butter over chicken. Sprinkle dry dressing mix over chicken and butter. Cook on low for 4 hours. Blend cream cheese and cream of chicken soup, and stir into crock pot. Cook an additional 30 to 45 minutes. Serve over rice or pasta.

I cut the chicken into bite-size pieces before putting it in the crock pot. I use neufchatel cheese and the low-fat, low sodium version of cream of chicken soup to make it a little healthier. It smells sooooooo good while it's cooking!

Gail, how cool! Through our mission training that is the degree I have too. We used to have friends in Ulaan Baatar, but I'm not sure if they are still there.

I'll be thinking about her and her adjustment back to being in the States... that is totally on my mind with our upcoming furlough... we have lived overseas for 6 years now, and I I'm a little timid at the thought of trying to fit back in! *sigh*

Thanks so much! I'm sure it will be an adjustment and the poor thing isn't going to have much down time at first....we pick her up early Tues am then get in the van Weds am (all 8 of us plus her boyfriend) to drive 12 hours to my brother's for Thanksgiving. She also has course work to complete in the next couple of weeks too and will also be wanting to catch up with everyone she's missed the past months!
Where is your original home? Will you be traveling a lot on your furlough? How about kids....in some ways they're the most resilient and in other ways have the toughest adjustments.

Havent checked in for a few days and felt I "should". Wondering. For those of us who won "set" prizes do we just wait for the company to send our things to us? I'm sure those who won prizes where they can pick what they want for the dollar amount they won things will move differently. I did pm my address to Lydia and assume she will contact all of the sponsors of our names and addresses what a task with so many winners! Maybe she has helpers?

We are traveling quite a bit. We start off in Florida for about 2 months at my inlaws', then from there we have friends, family and churches in Mississippi, Texas, California, Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and we're taking a little family breather trip to DC/Virginia too.

California is home to me, but my parents moved to Idaho after I got married, so it's just church family there now.

We have 4 kids, who aren't really excited about going to America, since they've lived longer here (3 were born in the States, but they were 4, 2, and 16 months when we moved here, and they're now 10, almost 9, and 7... #4 was born here and he's 5 now). Hopefully they'll enjoy seeing the country, and I'm praying they'll be able to make some friends along the way.

Sounds like you are going to have a super busy furlough. It would be fun to meet you when you pass through or around VA. We have kids the same age. Give a shout out if you have time.

Will you be home schooling along the way? Sometimes it seems to me that the furlough is tougher on families than the mission work itself...that is a lot of travel, a lot of visiting, a lot of strangers.

We have crammed most of our reading curriculum into the last 6 months, so we'll still be homeschooling, but mostly workbooks and hands on stuff - we are going to get the national parks pass so the kids can do the junior ranger program stuff as we go. I think they will really enjoy that.

You have it right about furlough being tough. 7 months of homelessness, no routine... it is really a relief to go back overseas! It is a good thing to be there... but it really makes us appreciate our ministry and host country too!

Dina, what kind of ministry do you have? We just recently had a visit from a missionary to Peru that our church helps support. What an amazing young man!

We are training nationals for cross cultural ministry/church planting. My husband teaches Bible classes and some basic phonetics/linguistics, and I homeschool, teach a basic health class and also keep the campus medicine cabinet. We're both involved in discipleship and campus activities, too. We have an interesting range of students from all different cultures within the country - for most of our students from tribal areas, Indonesian is a second language. A majority of our students are from tribal church plants... some with only a 6th grade education... but other students have been to college, and we had one even that had worked in the States for 13 years!

My 2 youngest who were 7 and 9 at the time really loved the junior ranger program at Rocky Mountain NP when we were there the other summer. Isn't it great to have the flexibility that home schooling allows to change things up but still get things accomplished. They should enjoy the variety of the states as you travel around.
What mission organization are you with?

I've only heard good things about the junior ranger program, so I think it will be great for us.

We are with New Tribes.

Hi all -- I'm going through a little HYCCT withdrawal, I think
Dini -- your itinerary sounded exciting until you said "7 months of homelessness, lots of strangers, etc". Now is sounds daunting to me!

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving -- filled with time with loved ones and gratitude.

I'm so glad to see you've got the family breather time scheduled in there, Dina! I know when our friends come home from Mozambique they always feel as if they're going back there for a rest . Their kids have all grown up there too, it's home to them. They usually take a trip to the Aran Islands (off the west coast, Irish-speaking) for their time out, but one year they nearly got stuck there due to bad weather. We were meeting them for dinner that evening, and they'd rung to say they'd be late because they had to take the only ferry sailing that hadn't been cancelled that day - but it went to one harbour and their car was at the other one, two bus trips away.

I finally made a card last night!! It feels like forever

Dini, sounds like a fun idea to visit the National Parks. I know furlough was always difficult but a blessing for the missionary families that we supported. Hope your trip back stateside goes well and heck if you pass through Colorado, just holler!

Oh we've done the Jr Ranger programs with our kids on all our road tripping! It was a super wonderful part of homeschooling to just take our trips on "off" times of the year and they both really enjoyed Ranger programs! We still love to visit Nat'l and State Parks!!

And when you holler at Allison, be sure to holler loud enough to reach me too, and I'll meet both of you!

I think we're tucking down into Colorado Springs to look around, but I'm not sure when that is.

Sounds like you have a really neat trip planned. I hope your family has a safe journey!

I'm wondering if your kids might like Luray Caverns for something different to see in DC/Virginia than museums and presidents' homes and other US historical sites. Just a thought.

Dina,
How interesting to hear about your work and your furlough plans. If you pass through close to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, I'll be waving at you from Keller. I know our church has had some contact with New Tribes, but possibly for only short term missions. So exciting to see their long list of missionary blogs. I could spend hours reading them. Thanks for the info. Enjoy your travels.
