I feel like I'm so lucky and blessed with all my in-laws! I married into a fantastic family! I came from a very bad place....but my Prince Charming rescued me when I was 22 and I've lived happily ever after so far! Quite a few issues thru the years caused by my blood family, but then my hubby cut them all off unless they agreed to change. They did not and our lives have been peaceful ever since!
Hahaha a few years ago my kids' preschool had a firetruck and firemen in for a little lesson. I learned a lot This was a pic of one of the guys getting all in the equipment so the kids would know what they looked and sounded like.
Oh my, apple crisp and caramel in the same pan!!! Heaven on earth...I'm so going to try that....I looooooove caramel....speaking of which, here is a totally decadent brownie recipe:
Caramel ribbon brownies
14 oz caramel (block caramel or wrapped candies)
3/4 cup butter, melted
1 can evaporated milk
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 box German chocolate cake mix
Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 13x9" glass baking dish. In medium bowl, put cut up caramel and 1/3 cup evaporated milk, cook in microwave on high until caramel softened (about 1 minute). Stir until completely melted into a caramel sauce. Combine the cake mix, butter, 1/3 cup evaporated milk, vanilla and 1/2 cup nuts. Mix well and spread 2/3 of batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 8 minutes. Sprinkle the chips evenly over the top of brownies, pour the caramel sauce over top of chips, leaving about 1/4" around outer edge. Add enough of remaining evaporated milk to saved cake batter to make a thick pudding consistency. Drop by glops over caramel sauce. Sprinkle remaining nuts over top. Return to oven and bake for 25-35 minutes. Center will still be slightly gooey but will firm up as cools. Let brownies cool in pan then cut into bars.
WARNING: These go very fast so save one for yourself before setting plate out!!
Somehow I overlooked this recipe earlier but YES. We make a very similar recipe - or at least we used to before my older DS got braces and was told to stay away from caramel. I had to promise him that I wouldn't make these brownies again until he got his braces off, because it would be too cruel to him to have these brownies around when he can't eat them.

I live in Spring! And I guess I've been here long enough because people in Minnesota say we talk funny. ( I can think of a few people in Minnesota who talk a little funny if you ask me. My husband grew up in WI though so he sounds a lot like them, but then we have picked up a lot of the sayings and sounds of TX.) We've been here 26 years and plan on staying 106 more. I grew up in the mountains though and I really do miss the Mountains.

Oh tell the Rutabaga story, eventhough some may have already heard it. Or at least post a link to it if it's on your blog. Because I need some more laughter and I know your stories are a guaranteed source. Please!!

Well, I didn't. And I found them in the Project Gutenberg (The Project Gutenberg eBook of Rootabaga Stories, by Carl Sandburg.) - how delightful. They remind me so much of Kipling's Just So Stories which my mother used to read to us from a beautiful old hard-back edition.
Beverly/beestamper: where in Virginia are you? I'm in the Shenandoah Valley, between Lexington and Harrisonburg.
Hi Patricia, you live in a beautiful part of our state. We have a nephew who is a sophomore at JMU and two of my SIL's are graduates. Not to mention, one of our favorite camping spots is not to far away at Lake Douthat in Clifton Forge. I live in Lynchburg with my hubby, 3 kiddos and various pets. I met my husband here while attending college. We've lived here 24 years (minus a 5 year hiatus in Orange Co). I grew up in Gloucester, VA (just across the river from Yorktown/Williamsburg). I love the mountains but really miss the sand and sea.
You are not too far from me. Are you ever down this way?

Know it well! I graduated from Aldine High School a hundred years ago! My son lives in Friendswood, but works on I-10 at Gessner. Nasty commute.
There are some beautiful mountains in Texas, but you have to drive a loooong way to get to them. The Davis Mountains in West Texas and the Chisos Mountains at Big Bend. That is a trip worth making if you've never been. Just don't go in July!!! Terilingua, the home of the famous Terilingua Chili Cook Off, is just out the back door of Big Bend National Park.

Love the story. I've never read that particular book. It is now on my list of books to acquire. I love children's literature. That is probably because I have never grown up!

Me too! I have more children's books than grown up books!
One of my favorites is "Hitty, Her First Hundred Years" by Rachel Field. Another is "The Doll People" by Ann Martin and Laura Godwin - they do come alive when we aren't watching! Of course, my all time favorite is "The Velveteen Rabbit."

I've always wondered where you got Understand Blue - just think, you could have chosen "Spink", "Skabootch", or "Swipes" - Skabootch has a nice ring to it too!
I didn't have the stories read to me as a child, but I really enjoyed reading excerpts on the internet!

I grew up south of Richmond and fell in love with the Valley while I attended JMU. So I convinced my husband that we should move out here. We've been in this area since 1993.
I've been to Gloucester once - to Brent & Becky's to check out their bulbs!
I don't go to Lynchburg often, but I do like visiting the A C Moore store. It's a little closer to me than the Roanoke store, but the travel time is about the same.
Do you and your husband ever eat at The Depot Grille? They have a sister location near us. They have THE BEST ribs. Your location has an entrée they don't offer here - Blue Ridge Chicken. It's pretty awesome.
You're so sweet. It's my pleasure. Plus, if I use up my supplies and run through my stash, I get to buy more stuff and make more cards! It's a win-win, I think.
