I say, if you have them and want to use them, who cares if they're in style? Maybe you'll be the one to bring them back into fashion!
Honestly, most of the people I send my cards to have no idea whether I'm using uber-trendy techniques and embellishments. They're just happy that I remembered their birthday (or anniversary, or whatever).
I agree with Cheryl, the only people worried about fashions in cards are card makers and companies trying to get us to buy new. Use what you like and what suits the card design.
Because I paper craft and do artwork strictly for my own enjoyment, I use whatever item or product or image meets my artistic fancy/need at the time that I'm creating whatever it is that I'm creating regardless of whether or not the product is a current trend. I don't really follow trends, so I'm usually clueless as far as what is 'in' or 'out' ;)
However, I can certainly understand where it could be important to be in the know on trends and to utilize 'trendy' in your work if there is a commercial element involved in what you are creating.

I use brads on most of my cards as well as a ribbon. The eyelets not so much but I won't get rid of because sometimes you just never know and they take up little room. And I love having my big rubber mallet in my craft room in case anyone tries to break in.
I just bought a Crop-A-Dile so eyelets are back as far as I am concerned ;-)!
I agree with everyone else - if it's beautiful or clever or interesting or meaningful, it never goes out of style. If you love using eyelets, you should use them!

I get this, I really do - but someone has to start those trends in the first place, yes? Who gets to determine whether something is outdated or retro chic?
What produces a "trend" is a question that has occupied the great minds of design, advertising and marketing since I don't know when.
I don't know who initiates trends in paper-crafting, but I suspect that, as in other arenas, they spring from one of two things: either someone does something that strikes others as new and fresh (even if it's a return to something from the past) and a trend grows from the grassroots up, or some company will purposely dream up something new and then market it and a trend will spread from there downwards.
Either way, there will always be things that are timeless. And there will always be people who just don't care whether they are "on trend" or not. They will just do what they like.
I agree with QueenOfInkland - if you are selling your work, or designing product, or on a design team, or a demo who has to meet quotas, you probably will have to pay attention to what's considered"in" and "out" at any given time. For financial reasons.
If you are just making cards for the love of the craft, then you can choose whether to pay attention to trends or not.
That's my take on it, at least! It's a really interesting topic!
