MIX5 - Mask-erade Ball (3-1-2013)
Challenge Title: Mask-erade Ball
Hostess: Misstreez
Keyword: MIX5
Hello and welcome to the Mix-Ability challenge here on Splitcoast! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!
Your projects can be any type – cards, scrapbook layouts, art journal projects, 3D pages.
My challenge today is to get wildly creative using a masking technique. Instruction how to do this technique can be found in the Splitcoast Resources section --> HERE . If you have a commercial mask feel free to utilize that in your creation.
We all have the Ability to Mix it up at this Mask-erade. Will you be revealed as a person of many mysterious layers, combining several mediums and techniques into your masked creation? Or maybe you prefer a more Clean and Simple approach and can pique more interest with less? Whatever your style, all will be revealed when the masks are removed and your creation is uploaded for our viewing pleasure in the gallery. Need some inspiration? Check out the attached samples.
What you'll need -
- Stamps
- Inks
- Copy paper
- Colouring medium
Think about using -
- Dye Ink
- Pigment Ink
- Paints
- Crayons
- Pencils
- Chalks
- Pastels
- Ink Sprays
- Micas
- Other
Uploading: Remember the keyword is without spaces. Use a comma between keywords with a space after each comma.
If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us stamping!
Need help linking a card? Follow these instructions!
1. Open 2 windows: One window for your card and one for this thread.
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Got to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.
You’re done!

Can we use commercial masks, or does it have to be DIY masking like the tutorial? When I read the title my brain got going already, and then I read on and wasn't sure my idea would work.
We have dinner guests tonight but I'm determined to fit a quick card in after work before I get cooking!!

Hi Sabrina, sorry for the delay in responding as I had to trot off to work as soon as I had posted this thread.
Commercial masks are OK! I'll note it in my OP.

(not a dumb questions) I would think so. I was thinking of my ... yeah...they are. I have Mr. Huey spray masks from Studio Calico...that can be used as a stencil or a mask.

I haven't put anything in the gallery yet but I wanted to say thank you for having these challenges. I took my spiral bound desk calendar from 2012 and gessoed each page so that I could do these challenges in a journal format. I'm doing these around a theme of Blessings and I am having so much fun with these! I've never tried mixed media before and these challenges are making it so easy to give it a try. Thank you for hosting them!

Thanks for challenging me to step outside my technique zone! I kept it clean & simple with the masking, but can't wait to see the gallery for all the amped up cards! HERE is my card & I also have a video tutorial HERE !

Japanese Tea
I'm quickly starting to figure out that the most difficult thing to do, other than come up with an original idea that doesn't look like I forgot to take my lithium, is taking a decent photo!!! I took at least 35 of the *&$#$@ photos and JUST when I thought I'd gotten the best, I open it here and see a blurred mess. But I CAN say that if I go back and try to take more photos, well, suffice it to say it may end my card making venture for good. SO...I hope this works!!
I did three layers of masking on this...just to see if I could! Well, I'm here to tell you that you can...just be prepared to go through a ton of paper and sanity. HAHA I tried for perfect but couldn't achieve it so I just settled for as close as I could get. Thank you for these challenges!

Got to say thanks to all our players this week as you are really showing how versatile this technique can be, and I've been inspired by what you are all doing. So far I've seen masking with cut out stamped images, die cut and punches, torn paper, ready made masks and stencils, and combinations of both.
A BIG shout out to all the new player who are joining in. AND hello to all the Gelli Platers in our midst - I want one!

I can't tell you how excited I am about these challenge. they have gotten me to take some crafty steps I have wanted to do for a long time!
here is my mixed media art canvas- love yourself
I masked the clouds AND the heart. I attached some photos here of the products I used and the masking of those clouds. I used the positive image of the clouds and added distress paint around the clouds.
The heart was added last, by using the negative image of the heart and sponging the distress paint to the inside of the mask.
Thanks for looking

Busy busy...
I made a masked scene for another challenge, but that's something I often do.
This is way too CAS for me to be comfortable with, and is only half of the idea I had in the night - the the other half has vanished from my memory!

And now I'm searching my desk for the little floret mask - help!!

I tried another masked card last night. I found a "gears" mask I had purchased a number of years ago and hadn't used yet. When my new SU set arrived, the two seemed to want to meet. :-) I kept the mask in place and over stamped with the ledger stamp. The ride tickets were left overs from am ephemera swap I was in years ago.

Wow - wow - wow! These challenges are really making me walk the plank while pushing me out of my comfort zone!!! You'll get that when you look at my card. ;)
The various media include ink for stamping, reinker & water for misting, ink for sponging, and embossing powder. Also multiple maskings.

It's beautiful Sabrina. I enjoyed making my card, but I almost wish I had stuck with something a bit more CAS. Sometimes when I get ideas while sleeping, I have to get up and at least start the project. Too easy to forget it by morning.
