I have the Brother P-touch and love it! It can do narrow and wide, in addition to height variations. I've never changed the batteries and have been using it for at least two years. Very affordable, very easy to use, very easy to find replacement tapes. Can't review any others, because I've never needed to try any others! Here's a link to one like mine:
I have a Brother but seriously thought about putting it in my garage sale. I am too lazy to use and prefer to handwrite labels. ??? Maybe I should rethink this, LOL.
Mine is basically this one but different colors. They're often on sale for $10 at Best Buy, probably because, like with printers, what gets you on price is the cartridge, not the machine!
I love it to make labels for CD cases (where I store most of my stamps and dies) and some ink pads (with a 9/64" label. Fits perfectly.) 1/4" (which I think is now 23mm) is perfect for CD cases. There's also 1/2" labels which I use for labeling the various boxes of things I have.
Cons are that the tape is expensive (I buy replacements on ebay for about 40% savings), and the way it prints is actually pretty wasteful of the tape. You only have one real font choice, but that's fine with me.
I love it for the same reason she loves hers!
But mine is a discontinued model, so don't buy it from Amazon...buy Sue's model. ;)
I also have the same one as Fionna does! I love it! Definitely would buy another P-touch if I had to. The tape/label refills are a bit pricey but I found them on line and it was a great deal!
I keep reading that the Brother P-Touch label makers waste a lot of tape. That there is an inch of wasted tape on either side of the text you print. Is this true?
The Dymos are supposed to waste less. But I don't know from experience. I'm still making labels with a sheet of Avery return address labels and a pen! It's a drag. My handwriting is kind of scrawly.
I'd love to get a labeler. But still not convinced which one. Everyone seems to have a Brother. Do you have a cheap source for cartridges?

There is a some blank tape on each side of your "word" but I like that so that you can cut them to uniform sizes. It's as always a matter of personal preference, IMO.
If your using return address labels, Avery has free templates so that you can print different fonts or whatever you want on your labels. Just a thought. You can select how many labels you want printed so your not wasting.

I have a system for using the Avery labels that eliminates waste. I set up my word doc for the right size label, I get a full sheet, I type in the labels I want, print, and then the next time I want to print labels I start below where I left off and delete the ones from the last printing so they don't print again, which would get ink on the label-less backing paper and then it smears all over the place. But you don't want to do that for one label. So I have a running a list and when I have a fair few to do, I do them all at once. So I've always got unlabeled stuff, waiting.
Gee. Thanks, SayStampsPlease, for eliciting that explanation. What a stupid system. I kept thinking a label maker was an extravagance, but, really, having an organized studio means labeling everything. I guess I should get the labeler.

I have that same one Gale. We have had it a long time. It was expensive when we bought it. I just bought tape on EBay and it was HALF the price of Staples. I will let you know how it works.

Gale - not mad at all! I was being absolutely serious in thanking SayStampsPlease. I usually type my labels because my handwriting is so messy. Sometimes I write them when I want something labeled immediately and never like how it looks. And when SayStampsPlease posted about using Avery labels I responded by explaining that I do use them, and how, and as I was typing it I realized what an unsatisfactory system it is for me.
I was being serious in thanking you, SayStamps! Your post helped me see that I do need a label-maker :-)! Sorry if my post was unclear and seemed bad-tempered! I am always so glad of the help I get here on SCS!

It is super fabulous, however the tapes are a bit pricey. I can get a three pack at Sam's Club cheaper than I can get them anywhere else. I haven't replaced the batteries yet, but I did invest in the AC Adapter just in case.
Went to Walmart over the weekend and ended up with this one...
The DYMO LetraTag Plus Personal Label Maker. It was $25.00 and came with one cartridge of tape and I bought a 2 pack of tape for $7.44.

I have a Dymo LetraTag Plus. I've had it for a few years. I love it!! I labeled all my inkpads before SU came out with labels. You can trim the labels down or leave them as is.
My 9 year old bought her own last year, I didn't want her using mine all the time. She plays with it but doesn't label and organize stuff. :(
I think that's the same one I have. Had it for years and love it. It uses TZ tape from 1/4" to 1" widths. Has 3 or 4 fonts with several "styles" like underline. I too fretted about the waste of tape on each side of the label until I finally found out that there is a setting to reduce the excess tape between labels. There's still some extra tape on one side. I think that is needed for the label to "exit" the machine, but the other side only has a narrow space. For those of you with Brother's check your manual. Maybe there's a setting on yours as well. HTH.
