Default How old were you when you started?

Hello!

I'm just curious of the age groups of people who stamp/papercraft.

What age did you start? I started when I was 33.

I started when I was around 30, and have been papercrafting for almost 18 years now.

I started by making a tribute album for my mother who had passed away, got hooked on scrapbooking (still do it to this day), was introduced to card making about 5 years ago, and have branched out into other types of crafting.

No signs of slowing down on it, just branching out more and more....plus my addiction to pinterest is really helping to get me to expand my boundaries.

As a kid I colored, cut out paper dolls, loved to draw and made most of my grade school valentine cards. My mother taught me basic embroidery stitches and I did a tiny bit of basic sewing in high school, then discovered crochet at 19, cross stitch and needlepoint at 25 and finally, card making and stamping in 2009 when I was 57! So in a way, I was quite late to the party, but it wasn't all that foreign to me. I still love to do needlework, but card making fills a need to make something that doesn't take weeks or months and needs no further finishing, framing, etc. Plus, I started to dislike searching for cards at Hallmark, etc. Haven't done that since!

I started about the age of seven. That was only last year, ROFL! I was a serious stamper. I had the best enabling Daddy in the world who bought me beautiful paper and stamps all the time. I have been stamping for thirty-four years now.

I feel like a Neanderthal when I read our replies to this question. I started about ten years ago at age 65! Have always sewn (started at age 7(, knitted at age 6 made my first real mittens in second grade; crochet came about that same time (grandma was a great influence); paper has always been big. My uncle owned a drug store and the window decorations contained tons of crepe paper which he gave me when the windows changed. That was a great source for materials for paper projects. When I first saw stamps at the hobby store I couldn't imagine why people would sped their money on rubber stamps when there were so many other really neat things. Then I attended my first stamping party. Now I'm an addict. I have almost 400 sets of stamps not to mention all the individual stamps I've acquired along the way. I just hope when I die dear husband doesn't sell my stamp stuff for what I told him I paid for it.

Way back in the mid 1960s ;) , I kept scrapbooks....kind of like the "Smash" scrapbooks (but just plain pages, no coordinated tape, glue, pens, stickers etc), filled with all sorts of memorabilia & miscellany.

As far as current/modern papercrafting, I started with scrapbooking in late 1990s, now enjoy stamping & cardmaking more.

In between there, lots of other crafts, many of which I also try to find time to enjoy along with papercrafting.

Been doing some sort of crafting all my life - scrapbooking, painting, etc. but didn't really start rubber stamping until about age 33 or 34.

Interest in crafty things kicked in around age 4. I remember my Mom teaching me to crochet around then.

Didn't start rubber stamping/card making until age 41. Lots of crochet, cross-stitch, decoupage, sewing and weaving in between those years!!

Stamping...pretty close to 30 years ago.
Scrapbooking...more like 35 years ago.

Let's see, that means I was...about 26 when I started scrapbooking, 31 for stamping. I know you can do the math. Jamie is just a spring chicken compared to me!

I've been stamping for about 20 years - I started when I was 27.

And you'd think after 20 years, I would have caught the scrapping bug.......

Nope.

Just cards please!

Good thing my twin sister likes to scrap more than she likes to make cards :p

Then I don't have to help much with journaling any of my pictures because she already knows everybody in them :o

I could have written this, except I was about 49 when I first was exposed to stamping 11 years ago.

I started when I was 40 and I had a school assignment to complete. I chose to make my presentation as a book and when to the stamp and scrap shop for supplies. The rest they say is history.

I bought my first stamping supplies when I was about 28 but the whole 'versatility' of these things where lost on me when I got them home. So I continued to sew in the interveneing years.

I have always been crafty. ;)

For years, I made Christmas centerpieces, glass ornaments, multiple clothespin ornaments, easter stuff, wreaths, valentines...

Stamping wise, my first set was Sensational Scenery, which is a 1998 set.

My mom had her 75th birthday 8 years ago and I put together a scrapbook for her celebration, but I think I had done at least 1 scrapbook before that. Oh yeah, DH and I went to London and Paris in 2000, and I scrapped that trip. So we are at 13 years? Holy bleep!

So that puts me starting at age 29.

I always did some type of paper crafting, starting with scrapbooks when I was a teen. But I started stamping close to 30 years ago when I was 41. My daughter was visiting this past weekend and I told her that when I die she should check the prices of my stamps before she sells them since I have lots of PSX! She just rolled her eyes!!

I started stamping when I was 51 and have been hooked for 12 years. Before stamping I was painting with watercolors and oil paints. Also painted furniture with acrylic paints. I love stamping because working full time does not leave a lot of time for big projects. I also love all the great products for paper crafting.

Stamping? I was 25, but I've been crafting forever.

Sewing by hand - 5 years old
Crocheting - 8
Sewing with a machine - 10
Needlepoint - 14
Bought a serger - 20
Scrap booking - 24
Stamping - 25

I'm 35 now and my favorite craft is definitely stamping!

The only other craft besides cardmaking that I was into was counted cross stitching. I started that in my 20's. My eyesight isn't what it used to be so when I was about 53 I began making cards!

Ladies, I will be 71 years old next month, and I've always LOVED paper!

I recently found a real keepsake. A card that I had made for my grandma when I was only 8 years old! That makes the card 63 years old. I have a pic of it in my gallery. Here is a link:

Old, Old card I made when I was only 8 years old! by buggainok - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

Here is a walk down memory lane for all you young gals. In the "olden days", like the 1950's, most school classrooms had a long narrow room at the back, with doors on each end. They called it the "cloak room", lol, "cloak" meaning "coat". There were hooks all along the wall, and that is where you hung your coats.

The "cloak room" also had lots of shelves, where they kept school supplies, with stacks and stacks of paper. All kinds of paper, even COLORED paper!

I stayed in the "cloak room" as long as I could every day, hanging up my coat, just to look longingly at the paper. As far as I recall, I had never seen colored construction paper before then. There were not stores that sold things like that like there are now.

The teacher passed out colored paper now and then for projects, which I always loved.

I actually bought stamps and supplies and joined SCS in 2006, but my cardmaking attemps were going on for most of my life before then.

I've always been crafty. I started knitting, crocheting and sewing when I was about 8 years old.
I really got into papercrafting/scrapbooking 17 years ago, when I was expecting my 2nd child. So, that would be at 26.

Bugga- Your card is so beautiful. That is a real treasured keepsake. I love the story of the cloakroom. It's funny how the smallest things in school guide your life. Mine was the Accucut machine. I worked hard to be a good girl so I could run the Accucut machine and the huge dies that were bigger than me. I need an Accucut machine like a hole in the head but I still want one. Did you ever make your own version of a cloakroom?

I have done some form of crafting since I was 7 or 8 years old. I didn't begin stamping until 2 years ago when I was 47. You would never know it has only been 2 years is you could see my craft area. I've spent thousands of $$ since then on Stampin' Up! alone.

Did you ever make your own version of a cloakroom?
Thank you, DeeAnn,

I was so tickled to find that card. And you know, I hadn't thought about it before, but I do keep all my paper in "stacks" on shelves in my craft room. If I just started hanging my coats in there, I guess I could call it my "cloakroom."

Bugga, how special that your Grandma kept your card and you have now.

Like many others I've been crafting in some form all my life having crafty grandmothers and grandmothers to guide me along. I started making cards for family like Bugga, but not until 20 or so years ago I started making cards for church members. Went to my first SU party in November 2010 and have been truly hooked since then. I'm 54 now.

Thanks for sharing your card and story with us, Bugga! That is so sweet that you still have that!

I'm another one who's always been crafty, but didn't pick up card-making until fairly recently. Tried everything from jewelry-making, to pottery, to needlepoint and cross-stitch when I was younger... but when a coworker introduced me to scrapbooking about 8 years ago, I discovered that paper-crafts were my true love. I switched to card-making a few years ago when the economy tanked... felt like I could better justify buying supplies if I was using them to make something for someone else, LOL. Now, I'm 45, and completely addicted to making cards.
