Challenge Title: Playing with Newspaper and Gesso Hostess: Biggan (Birgit Edblom) Keyword: MIX6
Are you ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge? We hope you find these challenges inspiring and bring out your creativity! Its the first time Ill be hostess for a challenge here so I hope I can manage it in a proper way and express myself in English in an understandable way!! Our goal is to make mixed media easy and FUN!
This week the challenge is to use newspaper and Gesso! You can add stamps, colors etc. in any way you like!
If you want to make your own Gesso you can find a recipe HERE !
Ideas/Tips
1) Make a background by gluing pieces of newspaper to cardstock and add Gesso with a brush. You can glue and wrinkle the newspaper for some texture. Let it dry (or use a heat tool) and then use stamped images, colors, embellishment etc.
2) You can also add a thicker layer with Gesso. Use a sponge, a brush or a palette knife and apply the Gesso onto a stencil or the negative space from a die cut and use a heat tool to make it bubble!! It gives a lovely texture to the card!
Uploading: Remember the keyword is without spaces. Use a comma between keywords with a space after each comma.
If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us stamping!

, I love an early post; I'll get my gesso done before work. I've pretty much stopped buying a newspaper but I pick up free ones on the way to work to do the crossword and Sudoku.
Thank you, Birgit - I'll look forward to this.
This looks like a FUN challenge...I have not combined there materials before. Birgit your inspiration pieces are FANULOUS!
I have not been to SCS in some time. I tried leaving comments and I keep getting a chart type comment format that I don't know how to use. Although in the first column before the photo it says something like: "comment here" but I can't get my cursor to show nor can I type in that box. And that is the same for the rest of the boxes. What should I be doing?
I left comments last week but I don't seem to remember this style of comment chart. Also last week I had trouble finding the gallery thumbnail display after leaving comments. Where do I look for directions...even the help won't open for me...so I hope someone here can.
Thanks bunches! ...Janj
What an awesome challenge!! And Oh My Goodness, the gallery looks fantastic with all those Gesso cards. I am running out today during my lunch hour to get myself some! Can't wait to try out this technique!!
Man, y'all just have a way of finding my weakness (i.e. the ONE thing i've not learned about & become addicted to). lol In the last 7 months i've learned about distress pads & markers, copic markers, washi tape, gel plate printing, stencils & silhouette machines. I've also become kinda sorta addicted to you tube videos detailing such new treasures & techniques but have avoided Gesso... guess its time to fix that glitch. lol
PS. Thanks for the gesso recipe, i'll have to check it out.
Thanks for this fun challenge, Birgit. I did have to substitute white acryllic paint as I do not have gesso. And I think I added a bit too much Here is my card:
I kind of backwards engineered this one. I had no idea where I was going with this project, as it was my first ever mixed media attempt. I decided I could try sun, sky and grass by just rubbing distress inks on the "gessoed"newsprint. That lead to a flower theme but when I found this John Lennon quote, I decided the hearts growing would make more sense. The "love" was stamped but the other text was hand printed.
I figured as long as I was going to make a mess, I'd make two cards since the first few steps were the same for both. Also, if one didn't turn out, I thought I might be able to salvage the other.
My thanks to everyone who uploaded their cards before me, as I spent some time studying the gallery to understand the challenge and decide how I was going to meet it.
Somehow I almost missed the Mix6 challenge. What day does the new challenge come out again???? Love this challenge and have never worked with gesso much so am anxious to try it out.....What beautiful cards in the gallery..... It will take me a while to catch up... Great Challenge Birgit
My attempt at an Art Journal page.. I am just getting brave enough to to try some of these techniques and am really enjoying the effort.. I do have newspaper on the piece and it got covered with the gesso.. I guess I should have rubbed some of it off before it dried..... Maybe next time......I had a stamp of a caterpillar so I tried to use some flower soft to make him fuzzy but it does not show up to well.
