I have 4 kids and I let them use the SU Stampin' Spots.
When I first started buying SU, I wanted all the colors, but couldn't afford the full-size ink pads, so I bought the spots in all colors. Fast forward 10 years and I decided to upgrade to the new ink pads when SU released the new firm foam pads, so I let my kids play with the spots.
If your ink pads have dried out, you could try Perfect Ink Refresher on them. Often times there's plenty of color left in the pad, it just got dried out from the air, so a few squirts of Refresher will make them usable again!
If you have reinkers, you could make ink pads for the kids. When I was strictly using spots, I used to make my own in-color ink pads by buying un-inked dye cubes from Welburn Gourd Farms and using SU's reinkers to make an ink pad. The dye cubes are the same size as Stampin' Spots and it only takes about 1/10th of a reinker to ink one up.
Hope that helps!
