Challenge Title: Yin Yang Hostess: understandblue aka Lydia Keyword: MIX1
Hello and welcome to the first Mix-Ability challenge here on Splitcoast! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!
If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal, instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!
My challenge today is simple! I want you to use two different mediums with a different finish on your card - one medium needs to be shiny, and one needs to be matte.
You can use these for your matte texture, or others:
Matte Gesso OR
Chalk Ink OR
Acrylic paint OR
Matte pigment ink OR
Chalks/pastels
And here are some examples of shiny mediums:
Embossing powder OR
Dimensional glaze like Crystal Effects or Glossy Accents OR
Glitter OR
Decorative foils OR
Metallic embellishments OR
Glaze pens
I made a video for you with the project I made for this challenge, and it is close captioned, if you are hearing impaired. Many thanks to a community member who suggested that! Just hover over the bottom edge of the video and toggle the CC button on/off for captions.
Also, it's cedar season here in Texas so my voice is terrible! I'm sorry! My videos will be less growly in February
Please remember to put in the correct keyword when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all ooh and ahhh!
Sound like fun. Too many ideas!!! It's unfortunate that shine, particularly on a flat surface, can be difficult to capture well in a photograph. Get some bright light bouncing off your work everyone! Anyone have some good "shiny" photography tips?
Ok, so I saw mix the 2, so I did, literally  ... Black gesso + chunky glitter covered with metallic gelato. Epic fail???

I am actually sick. Nothing serious, just lingering and today seemed like a good day to take it easy. I plan to shuttle my chickens to school and then loaf on the couch, watching last night's DVR-ed shows and study up on this thread. Then I shall play.
Love you all!!! Thanks!!! Love that sea-theme... Off to find a stamp

I suspect people are uneccessarily scared by the term "mixed media" when in fact they quite often do it without even thinking about it! Great to have a challenge that means it gets a bit of conscious thought
To quote a friend "SQUEEEEEEeeeee!" So much fun to everyone's entries and hear all the fun everyone is having! Since it's Friday it's a great day for me to play along (we only do school 4 days)!
I went a bit overboard I think - ha! I'm trying to get a good pic of the whole thing but here's a little peek of my new "art journal" - really just a little blank recycled notebook I had (about 5x8").
Thanks for the fun new challenges guys! Lydia your video is SUPER! :p

how fun this was....I had a bottle of gesso I bought at a class and then was to intimidated to use it....so glad to have some instructions...this was a blast...and thankfully for the craft sheet I splurged on, my desk doesn't look like it was blasted....teehee...:
what an AWESOME kick off! LOVED it! i went way overboard with my entries but really once everything is out might as well keep going right??? for my matte i used acrylic paints and for my shiny i used Luminarte Primary Elements - one art journal page and 2 cards...
Lydia, thanks for the awesome video! I've never used gesso and was quite intimidated to try it, but your video has me itching to buy some! I hope to play with this challenge over the weekend (with or without gesso). Thanks for this opportunity to try something new!
