I would think you'd have no problem at all if you bought transparency sheets for a laser copier from somewhere like Staples. Some acetates will cope with short blasts of heat as you found though.

I haven't tried the laser printer transparencies, but I think they would be too thin for what I had in mind. I wanted to make clear cards, so the acetate needs to be thick enough to support the card with a few embellishments.
So many techniques and products to think about... I'll have to start keeping a notebook to remember these so that I have it at hand next Christmas.
ooh PTI makes it in something they call cardstock acetate... and its thicker than the ones you buy at staples to run through printers.
but, I have heat embossed on the thin stuff too. you just cannot use it for a card base. ( it does not stand up, it kinda is like a balloon that lets the air out and it goes whooosh and unfolds and lays there on the table haha.
There is also available acetate that is heat embossable as some 'ordinary' acetate may be a little too thin to withstand any heat.
It's not the thickness that affects whether you can heat it. The laser transparencies are quite thin - too thin for a card base - but are designed to take heat as part of the copying process. I've successfully used a hair-drier on the Flourishes clear card stock to help set Brilliance ink quickly, but haven't actually tried with a heatgun.
Is the transparency film or the acetate film you all are referring to the kind with the stuff on one side? I have used these with alcohol inks then stamping over with Stazon ink, my image. I have not heat set this technique but just let it dry by itself. The thicker, stand by itself, transparency you could substitute with what you may have on hand. One thing I have tried is making shrinky dinks with plastic packaging from different companies and some working pretty good. So maybe you could reuse those with your project if you have some on hand.
I went to Staples yesterday to see what kind of acetate/overhead sheets I could find. They told me they don't carry anything like that anymore. :shock:
I have two boxes of this from Staples,(own brand) and its called 'Transparency sheets'. They were in a sale, so maybe they have discontinued them. Did a Google search, and this link to Amazon.com, takes you to a list of their stock: Here hth.
