This is my first time using a glue pad and glitter. I bought the pad made by Tsukineko, and I followed the directions exactly. I am not using it on vellum or coated paper, but just plain cardstock, which I know others have had success with. The problem is that even after several hours, the glitter just rubs right off! I cannot mail my Christmas cards like this, and I refuse to redo them. I've already invested a small fortune in them this year, not to mention the many hours of time.
What would be an inexpensive way to seal the glitter so it will not rub off? Unscented hairspray? I do have a clear acrylic sealer (like spray paint), but it stinks to high Heaven and takes forever for that smell to go away. Don't want people opening up their card to a terrible odor.
I am so disappointed. The whole glitter thing is a mess anyway, and I usually just use Stickles, but I wanted to stamp with my Snowflake set and use glitter for the largest image. It really is pretty, but what a mess (there is glitter everywhere in my house), and now it doesn't even want to stay stuck to the card.
Oh no!!!! I have never had any luck with glue pads!!! Honestly, glitter and I aren't the best of friends!!!

Ya, I think this will be my first and last attempt at using this method. The glue pad just does not hold the glue at all. Maybe using vellum or coated paper is the trick, but I have read others had success using regular cardstock.
For now, I am going to just use a good coat of unscented hairspray and call it quits.
all brands of glue pads are equal garbage... ( in my poor pocketbook and humble opinion...) (yes, Ive unfortunately purchased them all in hopes)
but someday... when you want to try this again...
they make powdered glue that is like embossing powder. ( A Muse used to sell it and so did a few other places) but, you would stamp your image and instead of putting on embossing powder you'd put on the heat it and melt it glue powder and while it was warm sprinkle on the glitter...
PS Sandy... let the hairspray dry... then try rubbing a test spot somewhere... ( it may not work either.) I'm thinking something like diamond glaze that completely seals it in liquid glue would work for certain.
Oh and I haven't tried it with glitter but I used Martha Stewart glue (got it with some glitter) for my christmas cards to adhere the rhinestones and they won't come off unless you rip the card.
I have that "glue" embossing powder and it has gone off. So don't think you can keep it for any length of time if you get it. I got mine from Pennywise Arts. It worked fantastically initially.
I have never had luck with a glue pad. I either glue it down with a MS glue pen or use stickles or glittery embossing powder. Glue pads are a waste of money for me.
I like the glitter glues/Stickles for less mess, or recommend glittery embossing powder (like SU's Iridescent Ice). It is heat set, and not messy once dried, but still has tons of sparkle.
My advice (maybe obvious?) would be just to try with one card first in case it doesn't work. One thing you could try is Glossy Accents - do you have that there? I have done this in the past, may be a bit time consuming but may save the cards, worth a try (takes a while to dry, prob overnight if thick).
I was thinking maybe sprinkling some embossing power over the glitter and as you are heating it up, add some more glitter over the top of the other glitter? Curious if it works!

Glue pads don't work! You can use heat and stick and the glitter STAYS! It's like embossing but instead of EP you use the "glue powder" and heat it and then pour on the glitter and heat set again. Works like a charm!

Personally I have made cards back in the day with the kids and used plain ol white glue and glitter to fill in over color. It may be worth putting some on a plate and playing.
Well, just a follow up to all who are interested. The hairspray did not work completely. The glitter still rubs off if I apply any pressure, but some does stay stuck. And it also warped the cards even though I used a fine mist. So now I'm trying to weight them down to straighten them out.
I hear you all about the Stickles. Love, love that stuff. But I needed to stamp an intricate image (a snowflake) and have the whole image be in glitter. I would have been forever tracing my image using Stickles.
I will try the heat and stick next time. And I am VERY tempted to return this glue pad to the store and get a refund. It was totally useless!
We live and learn! What I would definitely do differently in the future is to have the patience to do ONE card as a test before I ruin all 40! Oh well. The card is beautiful, and if some of the glitter rubs off during mailing, I will just chalk it up to experience. Most people are probably gonna chuck it after Christmas anyway (sadly).

Heat and stick is where it's AT! Just remember to heat set (but not too much....just till it melts) and then heat a few seconds more after the glitter to help set it! And then post what you made:-)
Agree with Minders. I use Versamark, then heat and stick powder, then heat, add glitter, then heat one more time. Glitter images come out just lovely for me his way, and stays on.

My BFF"s boyfriend is certifiably OCD...he has major issues (but I love him) with glitter because it's messy! I think I need to make a SUPER glittery Christmas card for him, don't you agree? :-) I told my BFF one year I was just going to pour glitter in the envie before I mailed it. SHe said he'd have a heart attack lol! He LOVES my cards but freaks out about the glitter so I of course, always send him a sparkly one! A few years ago he had his annual H-ween party and a girl wore a red feather boa that shed EVERYWHERE! I think he still finds feathers now and then and has a mini stroke! SOrry for the hijack but this just made me think of him and how I need to make him a special card:-)
I don't know about the differences between brands of heat and stick but I have an equivalent that was highly recommended and it went off. SO if you get it and open it, you may want to use it up.
Well, I wouldn't recommend heat n stick. In my experience it doesn't work. I've had luck with a glue pad, but only once or twice and then it wouldn't work after that. The only thing I found that works if you want to glitter a stamped image is using clear embossing powder and mixing glitter in with that or using the premixed glitter embossing powder.
Sandy - I've never yet worked with glitter so I haven't got any good suggestions for you but I can tell you this: Last year I wasn't yet stamping and I bought really nice cards from Unicef and one of the designs had a big gold glitter medallion on it and the glitter definitely shed as I was making them out to send. And that's a store-bought card.
Just saying this because I'm sure your cards are lovely and if they shed some glitter on their recipients, well, that's kind of the nature of most glitter in my experience as a receiver of cards. It does tend to come off.

I have heard poor long term reviews of Heat and Stick powder as well. :( I have several kinds of glittery embossing powder that I like to use. Judi♥kins has a "White Diamond" that I adore.
Oh I'm excited - I tried the Gina K way and it's wondeful...I embossed black then added red glitter to the embossed image. Not only does it look good, the glitter is stuck. Thanks for sharing!
I am awful with glitter of any kind but love the look. My favorite substitute is Iridescent ice by SU. It does require a bit more heat than regular embossing poweder but it is subtle and very beautiful by simply using versamark. No problem with glitter globs or glitter after heat setting.
A Muse still sells their glue powder. It's called Simple Stick. Judikins also sells a similar product called Sticky Stuff embossing powder. I've never used the Judikins but I've used the A Muse Simple Stick and I think it works great.
If you are trying to fix a card that you have already glittered, go back over the glitter with glossy mod podge and everything will hold just fine once dry. I think that maybe using the heat and stick would be best if you are starting new.

Okay...so I went ahead and purchased the heat n stick and it works...there's a card on my blog. You'll notice there's a lot of glitter on it and none of it is flaking off.

Just to let everybody know what eventually happened with my cards.....
I ended up just spraying them with hairspray a few times. They warped, but the next day I tried to straighten them out. We have to travel 600 miles over Christmas vacation to visit family, so I really did not have any time to "fix" 40 cards before we left. The bottom line was that some mailed fairly well, and the snowflake at least resembled a snowflake, but on others, the glitter just fell off into a little puddle in the envelope. What was left on the card was just a smudged mess. I felt sick when I saw some of them in person after having been mailed and opened. I spent a lot of time making this CAS card, and it was beautiful to start with. Oh well. Live and learn.
Based on what I've read from this thread, I might just try the glitter mixed with embossing powder.....IF I ever venture down this path again.
Thanks again for all the suggestions! We oughta start a thread somewhere of things to NEVER waste money on. For me, the glue pad would definitely go on it, and it seems like MOST people who replied feel the same way.
For some reason, every once in a while I can't view Gina K's videos. Usually there is not problem. So of course I was very interested in the Embossing Powder/Glitter one and I can't view it. Did she mix the EP and glitter (what ratio?) or apply the EP, heat and then add glitter while soft? Great thread!!

She applied the EP, heated it and then added the glitter and reheated it until she got the right coverage. HTH.
This year, on the cards I made, I only wanted glitter on certain areas & wanted it done fairly quick. I used a small paint brush & "painted" the stickles where I wanted them. It turned out great & didn't really take that long.
